Shopping For Journos

Poverty is the flavour of the season. Everybody’s in a rush to define poverty. Everybody wants to define who is poor. Congress is trying to feed all of them. Food, glorious food! Made me nostalgic! Many years ago some friends and I were chatting with a small group of American exchange students (at Gujarat Vidyapith) and we were talking about poverty. Yes, we were talking about poverty then too, as we are today. Some things don’t change, do they? We were explaining what “our” poverty was and they were explaining “their” poverty. One of “them” gave us a definition that has been permanently etched in my mind. She said: “Umm… In America you’re poor if a guy can’t take his girlfriend out on Saturday night or a husband can’t take his wife out to a great restaurant at weekends”. If you go back to the wicked days of Charles Dickens’ England you’d reconcile to the fact that poverty is a “process”. Except that in India it seems a permanent process. There’s Oliver Twist in an orphanage and his inmates starved for food. Oliver was made into a movie multiple times but there is one line that any hungry Indian will forever identify with, especially, if it’s Rahul Gandhi. Watch the video (1.09 mins)

Please sir, I want some more! Whaaaaaatttttt? Mooooorrrrrrrre? That’s exactly what I want to scream at Rahul Gandhi and Congress like the evil guy in the video. Why? I have a good reason. There was this 2-day Media conclave by the Congress conducted by Rahul Gandhi around July 23. I can understand a starved orphan like Oliver wanting “some more” food but why would a fat, over-weight, over-fed, Rs.8000-Thali glutton like Congress want to buy some more journalists? Many reported this, including the Congress’ own kitchen called Hindustan Times in their report: “Congress poll strategy: Hiring pro-Congress journalists”. Like it or not, this is the toughest challenge that RahulG has taken up in his life so far. Let me quote edited excerpts (in blue) from this report.

Hiring “pro-Congress journalists” for its research team is part of the new Congress plan to spruce up its media strategy ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Ha! Hire pro-Congress journalists? RahulG will really have to find a giant flashlight to find a few journalists who aren’t already pro-Congress. I forgive you if you laughed at all this but this is serious stuff from the Congress.

A long time ago I posted an article titled “Flanking The Queen & Protecting Her Secrets”. A huge majority of journalists were already doing this for the Congress. Have you in all your life ever heard of a “Blow to Sonia” or “Blow to RahulG” from the media? A Twitter friend converted a circulated image to suit the Indian context and this is how it looks:

Is there any news channel that doesn’t already flank the Congress heads and protect them? So what’s the complaint? The whining can easily beat the mumbling of MMS. Let’s look at the reason.

Citing reasons for setting up a research cell at the AICC, the document states, “Media has never been friendly to us (Congress), hence we need to be pro-active and give our inputs…We in the Congress have always been slow in talking about ourselves.” Pushed on a back-foot by a series of scams since UPA-II came to power in 2009 which were highlighted by the media in a big way, the Congress is of the view that the “unsubstantiated allegations only helped in the opposition mud-slinging” virtually going unchallenged. ‘The opposition propaganda borders on untruths, is relenting and the media picks up what it is fed. Our opposition (read BJP) has always been efficient and trained and planned in manufacturing information, twisting truths and facts and in spreading propaganda,” the document that was part of the presentation – Research Methodology and Linkages with the AICC – made by national spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit and his team.

Media has never been friendly to Congress? The media highlighted scams? I quote a dialogue from Scorsese’s “The Departed” again: “we are in the business of deception, not self-deception”. That’s right, the Congress has now entered the phase of self-deception and I wonder who the wiseguys advising them are. Now the party is playing “victim”. Great! Not a single scam was brought out by the major media. Even 2G was brought out by small-time newspaper Pioneer. Most of the other scams were picked up from CAG reports. Is there any scam that NDTV broke? Is there any scam that CNN-IBN broke? Is there any Congress scam that Tehelka broke? Even the CWG scam brought out by Times Now is alleged to have had other motives to it than exposing Congress members. Everyone knows the reasons behind the Times campaign. Here are some media celebs that appear on TV or write in some paper regularly. I will offer a special reward for anyone who proves that any of these journalists are anti-Congress and pro-BJP.

To the journalists in the pic I have also added an alleged Economist to comfort the Congress. I had to limit the pics as the image would have consumed the whole post. Are any of these people even remotely anti-Congress? Have they ever exposed any wrong doings of Congress? Have another laugh! And Congress says “Please sir, I want some more”. Who else is left? Let’s see; Shiv Aroor, Ashok Malik, Gaurav Sawant, Swapan Dasgupta, Kanchan Gupta, Navika Kumar, Rahul Kanwal? Well, Kanwal seems a bit iffy but the others may not be on the shelf. Talking about iffy I am reminded of a tweet by Sunil Rajguru who writes for Sify on what the media has been busy with in the last 11 years and more so in the last 3 months. Here’s what Rajguru tweeted:

That’s right, all these 11 years and since Narendra Modi was made BJP Campaign head the media has been busy with Puppies, Burqas, Hindu Nationalists so where do they even find time to slam the Congress? Is this party really reading the pulse of the people? I doubt any of their policies are made with any sense of ground reality. If you think Rajguru was exaggerating in his tweet then this image circulating on the net should amplify it even better.

The way the media morons fall over each other to cling to Modi’s words or phrases like nags can’t be missed by anyone. So where do they find time for exposing the Congress as the party whines? Even in the previous post about RailGate I have pointed out how Dainik Bhaskar quietly pulled a report that exposes a lot more about the case than the CBI would have us believe. And Congress still wants more. Mooooooorrrre? Some journalists have been a media advisor to the PM which doesn’t seem to be working for any govt. That a political party wants to “hire” journalists for their campaign as the HT report headlines is a collective shame for the entire news media. Not surprisingly none of them have discussed this pathetic move on any TV debate. So now people have all the more reasons for calling many media celebs “paid media”.

But in all this there is one inevitable truth that RahulG has acknowledged. It seems he stated in the media-conclave of the party that “people are angry”. Why shouldn’t they be? RG himself is not sure what India is. He is on record saying he’s ashamed to be Indian, that India is an idea, India is a bee-hive and the latest is, hold your breath: “India is a thought… youths make it, you make it”. So if he or the Congress doesn’t “make” anything why the worry about hiring more media-cronies? Madhu Trehan of Newslaundry had the best answer to RG’s problem with angry people. She tweeted sound advice for him. And all this is coming after long years of RG going on a ‘Discovery of India’ tour. He has stated in no uncertain terms what he discovered and made of India.

So people are angry it seems as RG says. So what does he tell his party-men? He wants them to show more anger and mindlessly protest at venues where Modi is scheduled to speak. This is cowardly politics at its worst and then this same RG claims his is a party of Mahatma Gandhi. I don’t think the word irony was ever explained to him. Not having guts to battle Modi on the political front RG and his Congress wants to buy media, buy journalists, provoke unwarranted protests against political speeches… he will do everything but stand up and show some leadership. This is the guy who sets the social media agenda for his eNREGA team, as they are called, without himself being anywhere on the SM. And now the Congress wants to hire so-called journalists for their campaign. I tried but I found it difficult to make them a shopping list. They’ve already got most of them. Try if you can.

There is only a very small clientèle for objective journalists because MSM has cast a strong spell on most.

  4. "Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land, they own and control the corporations that've long since bought and paid for, the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pocket, and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and the information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I'll tell you what they don't want. They don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that. That doesn't help them."

  5. There's a small (very small) list of journos CONg would love to have on their side - or at least neutralize.

Tavleen Singh is one. She may be taking a wrong stand on something now and then but it's an honest stand. And she doesn't take kindly to BS. I've been reading her long enough to know this.

Madhu Trehan would be another. Her influence on SM is growing. If CONg could induce a sly slant in her writings, it would be invaluable propaganda.

And Chitra Subramaniam. She came out of the blue and resurrected the Bofors ghost. She's drawn clear blue lines tracing the path of the scam money to Uncle Q. Savvy readers have drawn dotted lines leading further up the food chain. An old style journo who follows leads like a bloodhound is what the CONg does NOT need on their trail. They would rather have her leashed.

Don't be surprised if CBI is already trying to mine dirt on these three ladies.

  6. RaGa hires more journos where the platter is already overflowing and finally he says "IT'S NOT HAPPENING"! Cos' these paid/hired journos are out of touch with reality and fail to read the pulse of people of India. What all they do is to 'report and report and report what their pay masters want' and eventually pull them into the quicksand.

  10. It is BJP that needs to do this shopping and set up a TV channel and newspaper ( or buy one or influence one of the existing ones ). Otherwise the truth not just remains hidden - fallacies tend to take centre stage . And this site itself needs more coverage , more circulation in multiple languages . Whilst people like us can contribute - it is BJP which will have to take the lead.

Who do you think will make this a reality for the so called communal opposition parties? There is no use crying victim in the present situation.Only one medium is all that is needed since that will make the others careful about peddling lies for the fear that it will fall like a pack of cards. The case in point was the recent exodus of NE area citizens from the cities of India. The Media kept it under wraps till the whole world knew it and out of helplessnes they joined the bandwagon.

I do smell a seriously dead stinking rat . The media ploy seems to be to make BJP put all eggs in narendra modi basket and then simply take him down ( thru some court case, CBI rigged investigations ) . What would BJP do ??? Per the recent judgement , court indicted person cannot run for office . So BJP should do well to not rush into this before the elections are declared. And even there probably hint at quality , competence of other leaders . And make it more broad based . We all know mainstream media is completely sold out - they may just try desparately to steal the thunder that is about to blow up UPA .

Here is the CON journalist Rana Ayyub's great investigative work. Not my original but got it from a blog

Madam wrote a great expose of Gujarat encounter of Sadiq Jamal.

The problem is the lady forgot what she wrote earlier and comes with a completely new story nothing the CON lady wrote first time makes it to next time. No one will ever question her. All the info was fed to her by CBI

    First one: http://www.tehelka.com/dead-man-talking/

    Second one: http://www.tehelka.com/the-noose-tightens-around-rajinder-kumar/

Totally different accounts & messed up time lines. But story changes as she goes along with no evidence.

    ReplyDelete
  29. http://www.tehelka.com/dead-man-talking/ our great journalist RANA AYYUB wrote
But in a curious twist, another man entered the picture at this stage: a Mumbai-based journalist called Ketan Tirodkar. Tirodkar’s explosive account of what really happened with Sadiq Jamal, filed as an affidavit in the Gujarat High Court, blows the lid off a cynical conspiracy and raises many uncomfortable questions for the Gujarat government.
1(a) Around this time, first accounts in the media began to appear that Sohrabuddin had been killed in a false encounter and Vanzara came prominently into the news. Watching Vanzara in the media, many things apparently clicked into place for Tirodkar, and he filed a fresh and explosive affidavit against Daya Nayak in the MCOCA court, which would come to have a huge bearing on the Sadiq Jamal encounter. This is what Tirodkar’s affidavit summarised. On his money collection trips to Dubai, Tirodkar had apparently met Sadiq Jamal in Tariq Parveen’s house. Jamal, it appears, was pretty unhappy because he was not getting his full pay. At some point, therefore, he escaped and went back to Bhavnagar, where he got involved in a gambling case and was picked up by the police. He also had a minor stone-pelting case against him already. Fearing he was now on the radar and would constantly be harassed by the police in post-riot Gujarat, Jamal made his way to Mumbai and tracked down Tirodkar, whom he knew from his Dubai stint as a “Mumbai policewalla’s man”. He asked Tirodkar to use his police contacts to help him get out of the gambling and stone-pelting case. But destiny had other plans. Around that time, if Tirodkar is to be believed, Daya Nayak and Tirodkar were asked to supply a Muslim boy with some criminal background to the Gujarat Police. Jamal, unfortunately, proved handy. Tirodkar says in his affidavit, “Sadiq Jamal had come to me for help. Taking advantage of his helplessness, I asked him to come to the traffic police post on the Andheri flyover on 11 January 2003. I met him there and took him to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Daya Nayak had kept two police officers from the Gujarat Police waiting there. In recent times, I have seen the photographs of Vanzara and as far as I can recall, one of the persons waiting that day was him.”
2(a) But first, the sequence of events: two months before he was killed, Sadiq Jamal Mehtar and five others were arrested, presented before a magistrate and chargesheeted in a Bhavnagar court. The time and date of their offence is shown as 0410 hours, 9 November 2002. The chargesheet — a copy of which is with TEHELKA — was filed on 15 November 2002. Nowhere does it state that the accused are absconding. This intelligence input beggars even a common man’s credulity. Jamal had already been arrested and chargesheeted by the Bhavnagar police in the gambling case but let off. They knew about his antecedents and whereabouts. At which point had he metamorphosed into the dreaded terror operative Rajinder Kumar’s input made him out to be? Could he really have been “reportedly on the move between Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bhavnagar and Delhi” and “awaiting delivery of weapons and money through hawala” while he was under the Gujarat Police’s watch? And if they really did have fresh credible evidence on him, why did they not arrest him again?

    ReplyDelete
  30. In her 2nd article http://www.tehelka.com/the-noose-tighte ... der-kumar/ greatest journalist RANA AYYUB writes..
1(b) Sadiq was subsequently arrested by the Mumbai Police on 19 December 2002 and interrogated for a week by different officers.According to Gopinathan, it was then concluded that there was “no substance in the intelligence inputs that Sadiq had any intention to harm VVIPs”. This assessment was forwarded to the IB headquarters in New Delhi and Sadiq was handed over to theGujarat Crime Branch for further interrogation on 3 January 2003. Gopinathan says he was shocked “to know from media reports” that Sadiq had been shot in an encounter on 13 January 2003 — while he was in police custody — and declared a terrorist.
2(b) On 30 November 2002, Gehlot’s men went to Jamal’s house and found only his mother. Policemen posted at the local station told them they had booked Sadiq for gambling.

    Arguments

1(c) So according to her Same man was arrested by Mumbai police on 19th dec 2002 interrogated for week (she writes week not weeks) so week will end on 26th or 27th but still her week ends on 3rd jan. (lets says she is weak in maths) So on 3rd jan 2003 he was handed over to Guj cops and was bumped of on 13th jan, but he was present with Tirodkar and Dayan nayak on 11th of jan-2003 and was handed over to Guj cops.. Mam care to explain to low lifes like us, how can a man be present at 2 different places at same time??
Also if the Mumbai cops handed over Sadiq to Guj cops after a 15 day week, surely papers must have been exchanged. Mum cops must have given the custody to Guj cops and Guj cops must have taken the cutody. Where is the paper trail, Ms Sherlock holmes???

2(c) So according to her he was arrested on 9th dec in Bhavnagar, the chargesheet was filled on 15th dec 2002 and police went to his house on 30th nov and found no one except his mother and Gahlot found that man was still in their custody few weeks ago, but Gahlot dint knew where was he and so u argue that he can’t move between Bhavnagar and Mumbai without the cops knowing it.. So that man could not travel to Mumbai right?? ( Because our cops keep 24X7 eye on a gambling suspect, after all its such a serious crime) Then mam will you please care to explain how and when he went to Mumbai to meet Tirodkar.. Because according to her own article ( 1st) he went to meet Tirdokar in Mumbai and asked him to geet him off hook in gambling case, so its sure that we went to Mumbai after he was chagesheeted for gambling.. So just by your own article it’s proved that yess he can shift between Bhavnagar and Mumbai without the Bhavnagar cops knowing about his movement.

I am no spokesperson for Modi , but yet for the sake of ones own personal honesty and Integrity come out with a set of standards and criteria ( growth , governance , inclusiveness , infrastructure , malnutrition , poverty and what not ) and judge all leaders of this country based on that and let the facts speak for themselves . We should all desist from this shoot and scoot tendency . Why no one seems to be hauling Sonia , Rahul , manmohan on corruption, economic sell out to foreigners , inflation ??? 2.Why would everybody wants Modi to answer everything under the son, things which are not directly related to him. If it comes to voting, you should have questioned him on that.
3.Does that mean you lost all your hope on the secular leaders of India who were two-three time presidents of BCCI.
4.What is the relevance of the issue in the first place? If you read Media crooks, this issue was blown out of proportion to hijack the debate away from Coal and Railway scams. The crime must be money laundering by certain BCCI officials(far less than any other issue) and doesn't need even Arun Jaitley to comment, Govt can simply dig in and take the action of money launderers, those who watched the matches without knowing that they were fixed are the real asses.

    2. Poor fellow tried to question MMS once in PM's press conference. Sanjay Baru (the then media advisor to PM) told him that "You can't interrogate PM" or something similar. :)

  34. Offtopic. But decided to post nevertheless:

Look at the past of Sreekumar. No wonder SIT is not willing to buy his theory on Gujarat Riots:

He is referred to as SriKumar in this article.

Madhu also mentions about his past

  35. Gud one as alwayz,
I would like to admit one truth, that I used to like newz debates a lot but gradually I realized that it's all fixed. Starting from what topic to choose to which panelists to select, How to divert the issue in Congress' favor. Leave apart corruption, Just imagine CBI caught red handed changing the coal report but they dont have time to discuss that. Pawan Bansal declared witness. Just imagine the height that even 10 Yr old can understand but sadly CBI doesn't. They dont hv time to discuss Jagdish Tytler's role in riots but let MODI speak a word and they start doing Postmortem. And Ultimately I hv stopped watching NDTV,IBN7.
    God Bless these sickulars.

  36. The whole idea of Tehelka and other CON press/CBI is to just put out information that is dubious and outright lies but riles up communal minorities. None of this will stand up in a court. But the dame will be done and by the time nation realizes, the CON MAFIA wins another election. No one will be held responsible.
