Superstition

I’ve had nothing but bad luck, since the day I saw the cat at my door...” sang Lucknow-born British singer Cliff Richard. There are many in the world who believe a cat crossing one’s path is a bad omen, especially a black cat. Superstition has been with us since eons. Superstition has been tradition with cultures, families and individuals. There are places I know which carry out strange ceremonies to cure people of mental illness, schizophrenia or epilepsy. People resort to this as a last option when all other medical avenues have been unsuccessful. Rationalists across the world have helped destroy many myths, fake beliefs and superstitions. It is very compelling and interesting to listen to many famous ones like Richard Dawkins or the late Christopher Hitchens. Both these men have long debated religionists but they have never campaigned to bring a law against religion or superstition.

So when rationalist Narendra Dabholkar of Pune was killed by some lunatics on August 20 our media and politicians immediately started point fingers at Right Wing organisations, particularly a group called Sanatan Sanstha. The spokie of this organisation has been in the media for 2 days since denying his organisation had any role in the killing.

The reason for suspecting them is that their website had a pic of Dabholkar with a cross marked across his face. This is how stupid and immature our media morons are. But this is consistent with their political propaganda which seeks to imply that only Hindus have superstitions or so-called “fake” or “self-styled Godmen” who deceive people. And an even worse reaction of the Mahashtra CM was to quickly recommend an Ordinance against superstition and black-magic. The immediate task should, as always, be to hunt down the killers of Dabholkar and get them the harshest punishment but the media and leftist parties like Congress, CPM and others were using the incident to start an anti-Hindu practices rant. Most of the protesters in Pune and Mumbai (on the killing of Dabholkar) were naturally from Commie organisations, red flags, banners and all. Maybe all these folks didn’t hear that even the former Pope resigned because God told him to. Well, why the Pope, even Lalu Prasad Yadav went to a Tantrik for a ritual to help him fight the fodder-scam case.

So where is an Ordinance going to draw the line between a belief in some ritual and religious practices. Almost all religious people on earth have some beliefs and superstitions. Jairam Ramesh refuses to occupy an office which is lying vacant for 8 years because some previous ministers died in office when they were occupying it. The DNA article lists a lot of PMs and other politicians who have been superstitious. Superstitious beliefs usually come from bad experiences one has had or observing unusually consistent phenomena. Some religious leaders prey on these beliefs and not all of them are Hindus. In 2005 Benny Hinn gathered a large number of people for some “miracle healing”. And who were his prominent guests? Let’s read a bit of the report:

…After keeping everybody guessing, chief minister N. Dharam Singh, with family, state and union ministers in tow, landed up at the venue. Prompting an angry BJP to declare it will disrupt legislature proceedings from Monday. The show began at 6 pm, with more than an hour of choir singing. Clad in spotless white, pastor Hinn came on stage an hour later, and announced that he liked India and Indians. He also declared that he had come to tell people that Christ was alive. "Many of you are going to feel a presence on your body tonight. That's when you know you are healed. This Jesus I'm talking about will heal you,'' he said. Soon it was time for the VVIPs to be acquainted. Singh climbed on to the stage, and was embraced by Hinn. The pastor promised the CM that he would pray for the state and the country. Ditto with Union ministers Oscar Fernandes, M.V. Rajashekaran, and state ministers Mallikarjuna M. Kharge and H.K. Patil, and Bollywood actor Johnny Lever. Around 8.30 pm, Hinn requested the assemblage to maintain silence, "as I administer the word of God.'' At 9 pm, he announced that Jesus was ready to heal them and asked everybody to stretch their hands and pray. Many differently abled, wheelchairbound persons and other sick and suffering came near the stage to receive "the promised miracle''. Hinn then prayed for 20 minutes with his eyes closed and asked the people one to one: "Are you cured?'' Several answered in the affirmative. So ended day one”.

I recommend you read that whole report. The American miracle-man Benny Hinn was grandly welcomed by the CM, Ministers and other VVIPs. Now what would Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan call the show? A religious act or black-magic? This is where it is hard to draw a line between faith-based practices and charlatans. If people believed Benny Hinn, good luck to them. After all, he hasn’t killed anyone according to the report. The people were at his gathering of their own free choice. Were the handicapped persons healed for good? I seriously doubt it. But it probably made them feel better. Rationalists would laugh at it as they should and they should debate it, condemn it and educate people if they like but they surely have no business to demand laws and ordinances banning what people follow when it doesn’t hurt anyone. It is important to prosecute charlatans if they cause any harm or death and there are enough laws for prosecution.

In March 2012 there was a strange case of water trickling down a crucifix near a Church at Vile Parle in Mumbai. Thousands thought this was some “miracle” and rushed to get a glimpse. Sanal Edamaruku, a prominent rationalist, suggested this may be a plumbing fault and before long there was an FIR lodged against him Mumbai. Of course, it appears Edamaruku also made some uncharitable remarks about the priests tricking people to collect funds. The man is now in self-exile in Finland. Is Prithviraj Chavan going to withdraw the FIR and pardon Edamuruku? Mind you, the media and the commie politicians consistently accuse Hindu leaders and Gurus of being tricksters or thugs, without having to pay a price for it. So why is Edamaruku being targeted for calling some priests tricksters? After all, it appears the miracle-believers did donate money. We should be fine with people believing the miracles they want. We should also be fine with the Edamarukus and Dabholkars questioning these (without calling the religious heads tricksters and frauds). I am not aware if Narendra Dabholkar questioned this Church incident.

Is Chavan’s Ordinance also going to ban Santa Claus? Almost every Christian knows that Santa Claus is just a story, a myth. Seriously, somebody has to be crazy to think Santa goes around the whole word and gets in through chimneys to drop gifts. But it’s fun for children and it’s harmless. None of us can ever imagine Christmas without Santa. Here’s a Jewish man who turned to Jesus because he experienced a strange miracle. (Video: 1.44 mins):

Well, he held the glass out the window and it rained. Sometimes it rains and such sometimes it doesn’t. Some experiences can lead people to believe mundane coincidences as miracles. If the guy had prayed for frogs and it had rained frogs instead then maybe we could have called it a miracle. But if it makes people happy and even convert then it’s harmless. What will Chavan’s Ordinance cover? Even religious beliefs can sometimes be superstitious. People go all the way to Tirupati with Faith and drop a whole lot of money and gold to seek blessings. In a ritual at the annual Haj Muslims stone the devil and even the number of stones they should carry and throw are prescribed. All religions have rituals and practices and it is therefore difficult to draw the line. In contrast, charlatans are possible to identify and must be prosecuted based on complaints of cheating or fake promises.

Jim Jones who formed his own People’s Temple in the USA had his own cult following. After being hounded in the US he and his followers set up base in the northern area of Guyana, which came to be known as Jonestown. On November 18, 1978 over 900 members of this group were poisoned to death in a mass-suicide. This wasn’t religion, it was sheer madness. This wasn’t even superstition or black-magic but an extreme cult that led its leader to kill his followers in a “revolutionary mass suicide”. Prithviraj Chavan equated Dabholkar’s murder to the assassination of Gandhiji. I can’t understand the connection unless he wanted to make a “political” statement against certain groups. It will not comfort anyone that this criminal Jim Jones named his son Stephan ‘Gandhi’ Jones. It would be idiotic to even suggest that because of this Jones was inspired by Gandhi. Wouldn’t it?

Superstitions are an individual’s choice and cannot be eliminated with laws. Unfortunate as Dabholkar’s killing is, knee-jerk reactions aren’t an answer. The days when witches were burnt at the stake are past us. We have people on the streets that have parrots pick people’s future. Sometimes it’s even fun. I am not aware what the Maharashtra proposed Ordinance contains. But if it targets rituals and practices of only one community my bet is it will be challenged for Constitutional validity. In the meantime, the media will continue their propaganda (backed by certain politicians and political parties) to target Hindu groups.

PS: A report from The Hindu: “Are you tired of everyday stress? Sick of acidity problems? Your woes may end soon, if steel tycoon Naveen Jindal is to be believed. On Friday, Shashi Tharoor launched ‘Tiranga Bangle’, an initiative by Naveen Jindal’s Flag Foundation of India”. These two honourable MPs promoting the ‘Trivortex Bangle’ need to talk to Prithviraj Chavan.

  1. An excellent write up, Ravi.
We all know that these MFs and FFs of Congi and Commie type are two faced "Doglas". Their behavior in public and private are completely different. If you check the history of Powar. Patel, Rane, Karat and Chavan you will be surprised to see how many superstitions they follow everyday. They need a stick to beat Hindus, as they see that they may lose 2014 elections to NaMo. Unfortunately, these SODS do not realize that more they hurt Hindu sentiments more beating they are going to get in 2014.

  2. Maybe Prithviraj Chavan's parents named him so because their superstition led them to believe that their son will become as patriotic, upright and brave as the other famous Prithviraj. There goes one superstition!

The commie propaganda on TV and the usual ranting against Hinduism reminds one of the famous dialogue in Ishqiya "Tumhara ishq, ishq.... aur hamara, sex?" Denigration of Hinduism has become a tool in the hands of politicians of some persuasions and media to dent the pride of a great people and religion in an attempt to subdue their minds and souls. The debates seemed to suggest that dark days are ahead of us if people prefer anything "right".

The media will ignore the fact that the country's ills started when Congress and the vile first family decided to abdicate moral responsibility in their desperate bid to cling to power and encouraged regionalism, cronyism, casteism, separatism, tokenism, maoism, fundamentalism, media-buyism and all the negative "isms" plaguing the country. Now that NaMo is gaining in popularity, they will attack the one thing that has withstood centuries of oppression - Hinduism. That is one "ism" the Congress will never understand. Because while the first family and many Congress leaders claim to have been born into it, they never have truly understood it.

  3. The narrative across the board has been to project and highlight the smallest incident or accusation out there as an issue with, related to or against Hinduism. There is an urge to judge The prima donna moron in the league is Sagarika Ghose. Who the heck is she to drive an discuss on Faith vs Belief vs Superstition. I believe topics like these are harvested by media to simply peddle fear. The Commie-Socio-Sickular coterie has always ganged up to show the majority community in negative shade. Stupid media just ran short of agendas and topics that they had to organize and concoct theories to fill their air time. I watched the latest stupid "Face the Rat Race" tamasha and listened to the assembled crowd. From the beginning, this specimen of an anchor has a loaded and biased agenda. Sick, Sick, Sick.

"Superstitious." What a strange word. If you believed in Christianity or Islam, it was called "faith". But if you believed in astrology or Friday the thirteenth it was superstition! Who had the right to call other people's belief superstition?"

  6. I think this superstition "hero's" murder should be condemned to the extent that any aam aadmi's death is condemned.Nothing more. He was not doing any national service. There was the case of Hindu Idols "drinking" milk in 1996.None of these champions could explain the phenomenon. All rationalists went into hiding then and nobody raised that issue there after. As the public memory started fading, these champions of 'scientific temper' came back to limelight.

    No argument there.

If we follow the basic commonsense of investigation; who benefited from his death?
I will suspect Congress and Commies as much as others.

Regarding the law; no, no any activist should be allowed to make law or policy. No matter how much I agree with the cause. That is a recipe of disaster.
Inputs, information and arguments from the activist/group, is must.
But drafting law or making policies?
No I wouldn't expect clear vision through tinted glass.
What else can be bigger example of such disaster than NAC.

    Santa Claus: An Engineer's Perspective

There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18) in the world. However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the Population Reference Bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per house hold, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming that there is at least one good child in each.

Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 967.7 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has around 1/1000th of a second to park the sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get on to the next house.

Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purpose of the calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles (1.3 km) per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles (125.83 million km), not counting bathroom stops or breaks. This means Santa’s sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second (1083 km/s), 3000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest manmade vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at poky 27.4 miles per second (45.7 km/s), and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour (25 km/h) - that is four thousands of a mile (4/1000) per second (6.9 m/s).

The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium size Lego set (two pounds, or 0.906 kg, that is), the sleigh is carrying over 500 thousand tons US (508,000 t metric), not counting Santa himself. On land, a conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds (136 kg). Even granting that the “flying” reindeer could pull ten times the normal amount, the job can’t be done with only eight or even nine of them - Santa would need 360,000 of them. This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons (54,864 t metric), or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch).

600,000 tons (606,600 t metric) travelling at 650 miles per second (1083 km/s) creates enormous air resistance, and this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as a spacecraft re-entering the earth’s atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintillion Joules of energy per second each. In short, they would burst in flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousands of a second (0.00426 s), or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip.

Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from dead stop to 650 miles per second (1083 km/s) in 0.001 seconds, would be subjected top acceleration forces of 17,500 g’s. A 250 pound (113 kg) Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force (195,470 kg force, or 1.9547 MN), instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering blob of pink goo.

Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now!

Under the Anti-Faith/Black Magic/whatever --Can I file a FIR based on above "proof"?

One does not yet have proof that santa was from this planet. One earth day is not necessarily one day of their planet. So also one earth second may be a few days long on their time scale.UFO that have been sighted have been found to move and disappear at unbelievable speeds. First u have to prove that our chrismas samaritans are not from this planet.

  11. A insightful article Ravi.

To add to your article, If u ever visit a Muslim Majority poor area in Bengal, you would come across many Muslim 'Daktars' (aka Doctors), who are basically quacks doing 'Jhad-phoonk' to get you rid of illnesses.
Even in Hyderabad, I had seen cable TV ads of a Mullah (I forgot the name) who was boasting about his super natural powers to cure illnesses..

Nevertheless, to blame only one community for Superstition is outright outrageous and should be dealt with.

P.S - I still vaguely remember the ANS guys conducting a workshop in one of the science fairs in IUCAA I had visited during school days, where by Mr. ND was constantly brainwashing us against all sorts of superstitions and he told something about people who interprets dreams and was speaking stuffs. I had raised my hand and asked him a question which used to bother me very much during childhood "What happens to us when we sleep". He had become a dumb stuck rationalist and could not offer me any explanation.

    1. This reminds me of a similar experience I had around 15 yrs back. This was with the rationalist & educationist late Dr H Narasimhaiah or HN as he was popularly known as. I had attended his lecture on religious beliefs and science. As usual Dr HN ranted against Hinduism, targeting heavily it's god's,beliefs and practices. As I had known him for quite some time it was expected, come hard on Hinduism and make a passing reference to other religions even though the lecture was about religious beliefs in general and not just about Hinduism.

Finally after an hour or so he ended his talk by praising Buddhism as the most rational religion and asked everyone to develop a scientific mindset and temperament and shun and discard religious beliefs. I found it contradictory that a man who is telling us to leave religion is praising Buddhism as a rational religion. Post lecture there was a Q & A session. Some kid asked why Krishna stole butter in spite of being a God and HN praised that kid for posing such a wonderful question and said he doesn't have the answer for that nor why Krishna used to steal Gopikas clothes when they were bathing; thereby continuing the slander against Hindu beliefs. I felt it was unwarranted as instead of answering the question he is making a snide remark. A person was sitting behind me and I had observed throughout the lecture he was disagreeing to what HN was saying( he was discussing with his friend as and when HN spoke) and finally when the lecture ended he said something like "That's all?..." which sounded like a comment on HN's knowledge and intelligence. Based on his attire and symbols it was clear to which sect he belongs to and when HN made fun of Krishna this person was got pissed off. He raised his hand and said he had question. He was asked to go ahead and the gentleman asked "Sir, you say Buddhism is the most scientific religion, bt it says this World is an illusion. Do you accept it? Does Physics accept it?" HN was dumb stuck he couldn't respond. If HN really knew about religion or even about the latest developments in his area..Physics, he could have responded to that person, the question itself is wrong as Buddhism never says that. But it was clear that Dr HN had superficial knowledge of something he was talking authoritatively about, not just for the last one hour but throughout his life. It appeared that the man had decided to take HN to cleaners, he continued posing questions one after another linking to his first question, quoting heavily from religious scriptures, Einstein, Oppenheimer, Carl Sagan and Tao of Physics! HN couldn't say anything he was just gaping at him. It was becoming clear that if this continues HN would be exposed badly, luck was on HN's side (as it had always been as no one ever questioned him seriously in his life time)organizers came to his rescue and silenced that individual by saying that every one gets only 5 min's and he (the questioner) has exhausted it. The man sat down saying sarcastically... "Hmmm this fellow (referring to HN) is talks as if he knows everything about science and religion, he neither knows both..."

That experience taught me something. I learnt that one should never talk about something, least slander it, without knowing about it thoroughly as there are lots of individuals who are far more knowledgeable and intelligent than us in this world. It doesn't go without saying that one should be humble especially learned ones.

  13. Dr Dabholkar was a great activist who countered several insane and wrong rituals. He may have gone to extrems sometimes, however need for such a persons is justified when several helpless people are conned by godmen and people in their fear and peer pressure spend enormous money on 'karani' and 'bhootbadha'.

The objection that he concentrated only on Hindu religion and did not show 'courage' to target other religions is not very valid. What better option than cleaning our own house and throw unwanted things out? Being a Hindu, i think, he or anybody has every right to rectify vile trends in his own religion.

Media and congress immeidately pointing fingers at 'Sanatan' is pure nasty polytics. There could be several reasons why Dr Dabholkar was murdered. The bill , government is trying to pass, was constructed 17-18 years back, so it is old news.

All in all, i dont think this block is at all against rationalism and we should also keep balance in forming opinions.

    2. Being Atheist does not stop one from being a Hindu. चार्वाक ऋषी was a Atheist but still revered by the title of ऋषी. He was a Philosopher and hence respected in Hindu history. There is a place for नास्तिक in Hinduism.
I dont know as to whether Mr.ND had "denounced" Hinduism; but I have not "denounced" Hinduism,am an Atheist & still consider my self A Proud Hindu, because Hinduinsm is not a "Religion" but "CULTURE" & "ETHOS" in my humble opinion.
I do not necessarily HAVE to like certain Practices of "Hinduism" everybody is free to think for themselves and NOTHING should be FORCED upon people. At best I can & do appeal to REASON but that's the limit of what I SHOULD do.
For last 56 years my sister & friends are VERY actively trying to "Convert" to "Theism",without success.

    4. first, There was no rshi called charvaka, it was a philosophical system with least amount of literature that was thrown to dust bin. None of the charvakas were considered sanatanic, they were called atheists/nastiks and are always shun by dharmiks as idiots. Since there was no other religion, they just hung around under naastik umbrella. Hinduism that was named later during islamic period does not include naastikam. So, stop believing what your communist masters tell and start researching. Second, now that you know this, stop calling yourself proud hindu charvaka, because charvakas were never hindus. If you want to clean your shit, I've an idea, start with the atheist communist shit.

    5. Nothing wrong in cleaning our own house nor saying it doesn't require any cleaning but it would be better it if's cleaned by it's residents, people who live there, love it and are concerned about it. Not outsiders who do it for other reasons other. Is it OK if others punish your kid when he/she makes a mistake or would you prefer to do that yourself? Likewise it will be helpful to Hinduism if it's negativeness/shortcomings are brought out by people who love it like Adi Sankara, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi etc., not folks who hate it.I don't know about Mr ND but the so called rationalists I have known have been some of the most hate filled individuals who are neither rational nor humanists. Hatred to Hinduism is in their DNA and are least bothered about it's reformation or transformation. All they are concerned is about gaining popularity and using that to advance their personal/career interests. They are duplicitous and hypocritical targeting only Hinduism by giving the reason what you have given for doing so and saying that since it's the major religion here (in India they are targeting more than others. What crap? if that's the case they should openly acknowledge that rather than maintain a crooked silence when it comes to other religions. How many rationalists have you come across questioning the beliefs, prayer meetings, thanks giving ads in papers of Abrahamic religions? How many have exposed the misdeeds of the priestly/religious lot in those religions? Is it ok to not do so and just focus on setting our house in order? If that's the case then please leave that us, we will introspect from time to time and do the necessary clean up as what we have been doing since time immemorial.

I hope you know Hinduism is a continuously evolving and reforming religion. It has been always open to criticisms (healthy) and change and has been the religion which has undergone tremendous changes throughout the history of time. How many religions can claim that? Both in India and here in the Bible belt sector of US I have interacted with ordinary as well intellectual class of the two largest Abrahamic religions and know very well how much scientific they are. Just to give an example, I can say authoritatively an illiterate/ignorant Hindu will not deny the theory of evolution. He/she may profess ignorance about that subject but will not vehemently deny it like what the so called educated folks from those religions do. Can there be a greater superstition than that?

Don't come back saying that the quantum of superstitious beliefs are more in Hinduism than other religions so it needs more focus than others. That's natural as the amount of philosophical/spiritual knowledge is more when compared to others. Where there is light there will be darkness, not saying that we need to put up with it or not take corrective action but would encourage that coming from someone who loves it rather than someone who hates it.

This article neither justifies superstitions nor says nothing needs to be done about it. It raises very good point about the nature of superstitions and the accompanying hypocrisy of the political/so called intellectual class and the debauch Indian media. Ravinar, once kudos for a well written article, yours and Aravindan's on the same:http://centreright.in/2013/08/of-superstitions-a-martyr-and-a-bill/#.Uhgghj-fiw4 are very well written and has valid points.

    7. @NK Sarma, Why so serious?
I have heard of charvak-muni in some childhood stories too. I had read/heard that the charvak-system is attributed to this charvak-muni. In fact 'rinam kritva ghritam pibet' has been attributed to charvak-muni (in the stories told to me). It may all be hogwash but how are you so sure about non existence of charvak-muni?

Anyway, talking about 'nastik' rishis, my favorite is Jabali. He is mentioned in valmiki ramayan. He is a personal favorite of mine. I read about him through a bengali translation of valmiki ramayan. Translation done by a genius named Rajshekhar Basu (pen name: Parashuram)

      Delete
    8. @Sambaran, first, rishi and muni are different. Second, you may have 'heard', but you will be surprised there is never a reference. Third, rinak kritva is from a rishi called brhaspati and believe me he was not an atheist. However, the charvaka philosophy is lokayata which uses the fundamentals of this one sloka. Fourth lokayatam is not same as atheism, lokayatam failed because it had no capability for societies and social sustinance. Atheism of today is a mixture of lokayatam (for godlessness) and aastikam (for social morality). So, its only opportunistic communists who use the earlier lokayatam to squeeze in atheists into hinduism.
Coming to your favorite Jabali. I assume this translation that you read also included what Vashista told rama about Jabali. Vashista said jabali's position was due to his love towards rama and to convince rama to give up vanvas. Second, Jabali does not have significant contribution to literature, we don't know his overall position than just few slokas in ramayan. His presence among great rishis like vasista in dasaratha's darbar itself proves that he could not have been an aastik. Jabali as any other rishi was a rishi because of his penance or 'tapas'. Naastik doing tapas is an oxymoron, its just not possible. So, Jabali can't be a naastik though he is attrubuted to speak naastik justfications to Rama. Ravan did not like Rama, hiranyakashipu did not like vishu, but even they were not naastiks.
@sambaran and @seasons In summary, I will staunchly oppose the marxist and today's atheist opportunistic usage of our rishis for justifying their today's agenda, because its a lie.

  15. Narendra Dabholkar has named his son as Hamid (a Muslim name)

An article from Times of India states that "Dabholkar's son Hamid, who is named after the progressive Muslim thinker and rationalist Hamid Dalwai, is a doctor and a social worker". You can read the article here - "http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-08-21/india/41432328_1_satara-eradication-kabaddi"

I got curious to know more about this Hamid Dalwai, a wikipedia article about Hamid Dalwai - "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamid_Dalwai" has some interesting facts. The article says that "Dalwai joined the Indian Socialist Party of Jai Prakash Narayan in his early adulthood, but left it to devote himself to social reforms in the Muslim community, especially regarding women's rights. Despite living in a period when most people were staunchly religious and orthodox, Hamid Dalwai was one among the few religiously secular people. He strove towards a uniform civil code rather than religion specific laws."

Narendra Dabholkar named his son after Hamid Dalwai, but did Narendra Dabholkar ever worked for UNIFORM CIVIL CODE? IF BJP works for UNIFORM CIVIL CODE it is labelled as COMMUNAL, but if Hamid Dalwai does the same thing he is not at all a communal, and Rationalist like Narendra Dabholkar even name their son after Hamid Dalwai.

The Wikipedia article also says that "Hamid worked towards reforming bad practices in the Muslim community especially towards women, like injustice towards Muslim women by the Muslim community, practice of one sided verbal divorce by Muslim men, multiple wives, etc. He helped many Muslim women who were victimised by Muslim orthodox practices to get justice. He campaigned for encouraging Muslims in acquiring education in the State language rather than Urdu, their mother tongue. He also tried to make adoption an acceptable practice in the Muslim community."

Did Narendra Dabholkar ever worked for making Marathi the offical language of every citizen of Maharashtra including the Muslim citizens????

Narendra Dabholkar the great RATIONALIST must have have some rational to name his son as Hamid (a muslim name for a staunch Konkani Hindu ) after Hamid Dalwai. But alas WE the people find that all that Hamid Dalwai stood for was never a subject of Narendra Dabholkar's Activism. That tells all about the RATIOANLISM and ACTIVISM of the GREAT Narendra Dabholkar.

    PS:-

the Wikipedia Artticle also says that "Dalwai's brother Husain Dalwai is a Congress leader in Maharashtra, a former Member of Indian Parliament, and the state president of Samajwadi Party in Maharashtra."

Does his naming the son so prove his Rationality or Pandering to ....?
Why was the son not named after the GREATEST proponent of Rationality -- V D Savarkar ? or Raja RamMohan Roy?

    2. Dr Dabholkar was really very honest activist in pursuing his cause, but the media coverage of his killing is similar to the the killing of Mahatma Ganndhi . Dr. KING!
Thousands of farmers committed suicides in Mh'tra state but the media in Pune. Mumbai was very insoucient and careless to report. Hindu newspaper from Chennai brought the issue on national fora with help of P Sainath & N Ram!
All these social refomers are living in ivory tower in Sadashiv Peth Pune as they are mostly from Brahmin community unmindful of the miseries in rural side which has zero -health care, zero PHC or hospitals! This is is the reality and the people take the help of QUACKS. DHMS doctors!

  16. well said...

basically the organization that is being targeted by leftist medias for this incident, was fighting a legal battle against the man since last few years. They had also published a book to prove his points wrong.they were worried because of few random clauses in the new bill that could have been used by legal enforcement authorities in a wrong way.so clearly they were fighting the battle at the thoughts level. Still when all of the media including honorable CM of Maharashtra and few other MLAs started taking the name directly, I was surprised...

More superstitious was the demand of the man's supporters to call of a special session of house and get the law passed! horrible this is!!! How can a law be passed like this just because a man who wanted it to be passed died? tomorrow if someone from opposition dies like this, will govt take back the bill? what kind of stupidity it is? and isn't this being superstitious?
the man was in favor of LOGIC...do u see any logic in passing this bill like this?
there can be many other causes of the murder as well...eg. the institute run by this man was not audited for last 12 years...they were getting lot of foreign funds etc etc
Money can also be one of the reasons...

basically what I didn't like in this was people who are so called "ONLY PROMOTERS LEFT" for enforcing LOGIC in life, are behaving illogically since the death!
they prayed..they offered flowers, they offered garlands, they shouted "Amar rahe" for the man that never believed life after death...they even said may his soul rest in peace but the man never believed in soul!

May god help these atheists! May the soul rest in peace if it exists.

  17. There is lot of things I do which can not be provided with a ' so called rational' evidence. Do I forfeit my right to exist?

My experience is that most HIndu Saints advocate for not falling pray to dogmas and superstitions. All vigorously denounce and suggest not to do heinous crime of girl child abortion.
I never heard a Hindu saint to ask for a law for this. Instead they do thru spread of awareness.

Who is Dhabhoker to dictate thru law what I should do and not do.
For any crime of money fraud and other such things, there are already laws.

I did not see any outrage on 40 ppl killing in Bihar but heavy firing thru commi guns in media for Dhabholkar and against Asaram.

In larger context, I see a slow disassembling of Hindu religion which perhaps is targetted to be fully converted to xchianity by next 50-100 years.

Lastly, I strongly suspect terrorists in India and world are funded by Vetican including AlQuada. They help defame other religions including Bhuddhism, HInduism and Islam and also help sell more weapons in manufactured strife across the world.

  19. Nice one as usual Ravinar Ji.
If these idiots have to frame laws against irrational practices, there is at least one thing to start with and none more important: Homeopathy. This non-scientific and proven irrational practice is not only practiced by millions in India (saying Indian subcontinent exclusively may not be incorrect) and the government institutes even issue degrees in Homeopathy. Now that is where a law against irrationality is needed. This Dhabolkar's case is surely to target us Hindus.
As for my comments about Homeopathy, I am a professional scientific researcher and my comment is based on scientific facts and not just common knowledge.

  22. A wonderful piece of writing.

Here is one example, how paid Media Commie reporters network, particularly in this case of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar's killing works.

On Aug 22, 2013 Maharashtra Times a Marathi daily on page 5 it is said that "छोट्या मनाची मंडळी देश काय चालवणार", "भाजप नेते नरेंद्र मोदी दंगलीची संधी शोधत आहेत" meaning "How can mean minded people can run a country" "BJP leader Narendra Modi is seeking an opportunity to create communal riot" Further , this statement is made by Congress CM Prithviraj Chavan. Both these statements are clearly implying that BJP and Narendra Modi are responsible for Dr. Narendra Dabholkar's killing.

Unfortunately, so far there is no punishment for such type of propaganda except than writing on Ravinarji's blog. I do not know how somebody can get a legal remedy for such defamatory writings. My blood is boiling.

Reading these type writings, statements of Congress/NCP spokespersons and utterances of their ideological inspiration Kumar Ketakar, Nikhil Wagale one feels that the very same people have vested interest in killing of Dr. Dabholkar. Today they are totally pushed in corner due to expose in social media. They need opportunity to hit back and paint BJP/RSS/Hindus in one stroke. I am sure Congress/NCP will not be able to book the culprits. It will remain a mystery and a convenient handle to target BJP/RSS/Hindus.

  26. What would you call the great work done by Raja Ram Mohun Roy, Sawmi Dayanand Saraswati of the Arya Samaj and Swami Vivekanand and many other reformers of the Hindu religion in the last century? They were all Hindus, some believing, some non-believing, but all of them united in their belief that Hindu society has to be liberated from the superstitious clutches it had fallen into?

Being Hindus, it is fairly obvious that Hindu thinkers can try to reform only the Hindu religion. Other religion have to find their own reformers and they do. Most of the comments here are unfortunately only enforcing the belief that the ban ordinance is not only a requirement in Maharashtra today. Rather it should be expanded in its scope and extended to whole of India.

  27. Even Rationalist Actor of Tamil Nadu Kamal Hasan has a belief in such superstitious one example is in all of his movie one "Toilet" going scene will be there. He thinks this small sequence is a good luck for his movie to get hit.

As I have not seen Viswaroopam, I cant say was there any such scene but in all of his earlier movie one scene is there.

My wife dares Kamal Hasan to act with Kerala Actress Shobana, he will never do that because After Rajnikanth became Super Star and his first flop movie he gave was "Shiva" and Actress in that movie was Shobana and all magazine of those days called her a bad omen and many even cancelled movie signed with her.

When ManiRatnam went to Rajni with movie "Thalapathy" Story, Rajni proposed Shobana as an Lead Actress for his pair. ManiRatnam was reluctant with Rajni's choice of Actress but later ManiRatnam agreed with small role for Shobana.

  28. In the past the superstition was a way to stop people from doing a particular task which could potentially be harmful. In other words it was a way to scare people and forbid them from doing that work.

If we examine the reason for prevalence of these superstitions then we can correlate some of them to some scientific justifications. Now having said that I am not encouraging or justifying them but at least, some if not all, superstition have a logic behind them.e.g. it is considered that if u cut ur nails inside ur home, it will bring destruction. Its all boils down to individual choices in the end.

Although there may be no logic behind superstition and it may not be of help but as log as it helps someone and doesn't harm anyone else, it should be declared illegal through laws. Spread the awareness and educate people against that. Remove the root and not the messengers.

  29. I think all these Superstition were Imported to India with Foreigner coming into India for thousand of Years. because Hinduism is the most Scientific Religion in the World one look at our Vedas, Upnishads and Vaastu which is still considered a Science. Hinduism always been changing with the time. what about films like Omen, Carlos santana's Black Magic Women.

  30. Superstition is billion dollar industry in India, so why they would be quiet when such a bill is introduced. People say that if you ransack someones life, they will make you their lives.
