Spuriosity Killed The Katju

The old proverb about cats and curiosity has been around since Shakespearean times. It was used in a different form then and only in early 20th century has it come to be used in its current form. It is meant to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation and crossing certain lines. The first known usage of the proverb in a newspaper was on March 4, 1916 in The Washington Post as it quoted a report from the NewYork World titled “Four Departments of NewYork City Government Summoned to Rescue Feline”. Here’s how the story ran:

So poor Blackie died! In this day and age, though, curiosity is encouraged and doesn’t kill all that much. It’s spuriousity that kills. That’s right, especially when it comes to airing views in newspapers and on TV supported, not by facts, but by spurious theories. Justice Katju (JK) does cross the line of indecency when he frequently attacks Narendra Modi with spurious theories, analogies and untruths. In response to JK’s latest spurious piece in The Hindu I had written “Justice for 10000 killed in Gujarat 2002”. I had put him in the same basket as Aakar Patel and Ram Guha. I am often advised by good friends and well-wishers that JK is best ignored. You see, to ignore JK is like a woman mistaking a lump on the breast for a boil. Aakar Patel and Ram Guha are boils and can be ignored as they go away in some time. JK is no boil, he’s a lump that can turn out cancerous because he was a judge in the SC and still holds a statutory office. Aakar and Guha are, at best, street hawkers (my apologies to sincere, hard-working hawkers). This is the reason Arun Jaitley chose not to ignore him and provided one of the most stinging responses ever seen in writing from a politician.

I am a man who not only supports free speech but absolute free speech. The morons who believe JK is merely exercising his right to free speech are mistaken. He has been given the opportunity to speak at various functions and write in various newspapers more because he’s the PCI chairman at not because he’s a former judge or individual of great wisdom. They also do not ask if JK’s writings and utterances are motivated. And he uses these opportunities to propagate his spuriousity. Let’s just go through a few samples.

Despite being a judge who would be expected to care for facts JK still chose to peddle fake and unverified numbers of Muslims killed in Gujarat 2002 in his article. And, of course, he makes readers believe only Muslims were killed and not Hindus. If this is not political tinkering, what is? On February 18 in a chat with Rahul Kanwal and Meenakshi Lekhi on Headlines Today JK used more spurious nonsense to defend himself. He cited women’s bellies being slashed and ripped and burnt. This gory tale doesn’t come from anywhere but appears to be from Arundhati Roy’s wonder world of fiction. I had quoted the whole fake story of Suzy Roy in “SC exposes media’s clean shit” after the SC didn’t accept Zakia Jafri’s petition against Modi. For her bogus story in Outlook magazine, Arundhati had apologised but JK uses similar stories without an iota of evidence. Is he fit to be the PCI chairman? When told that Modi has been elected by people, JK nonchalantly says “we all know how elections are won”. Is he suggesting all elections in India are also spurious or is it only when it comes to Modi? The only major case of election-fraud in a court is not related to Modi but to P. Chidambaram.

In addition to the bellies-ripped story, JK also cites the killing of Ehsan Jafri as a planned attack. It took Meenakshi Lekhi to point out to him that leading the killers of Jafri was not a BJP man but a Congress MLA called Meghsingh Chaudhary. To all the criticism JK grandly claims that he has not only criticised BJP but also Congress. In support of this argument, the moron claims he criticised Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan. Alright, but what was the criticism for? Corruption? Irrigation scam? Nope! The criticism was for 800 journalists being attacked by policemen for undertaking some protest. Does it take anyone to tell this idiot that speaking up for journalists’ rights is part of his job and can’t be compared to wanton and unprovoked criticism of Narendra Modi or any other CM? He is supposed to be a former judge but cannot see logic as clear as daylight. Again, this is quite a spurious defence. Moreover, he threatens Chavan with dismissal under Article 356. Jaitley rightly asks the question if the guy is bestowed with such powers. It’s, unfortunately, JK who has been acting like Hitler.

I doubt anyone in the media or any observer would deny that the campaign against Modi was the biggest witch-hunt in India. The hunters who participated benefited financially, in position and in influence. There is no reason not to criticise Modi but it is the proportions and usage of spurious information and analogies that make JK look more like Teesta Setalvad or Mallika Sarabhai. I wonder if he also dances as Mallika does. I have no hesitation in calling JK a potentially dangerous lump on the breast for more reasons. In his interview with TimesNow Jaitley mentioned how as Law Minister he had experienced senior judges on the verge of retirement clamouring for post-retirement postings. He also mentioned that some judgements just around the pre-retirement phase could be affected by such lust. With his open political campaign that is intended to benefit the Congress party, JK now has people wondering about the conduct and motives of judges themselves. By his conduct and utterances JK has pushed people into wondering if judges are above political persuasions when they are in office. This is the dangerous lump on the breast that cannot be ignored. In my previous post I have not attributed any motives to JK’s biased, prejudiced and spurious articles and nor have any of his critics in the current episode. However, grapevine in Delhi is a big business and gossip and rumour are staple diet for journalists. How does JK explain this piece that appeared in the Sunday Guardian? Is this smoke without any fire?

The bimbos in our media who have been talking of freedom of speech have not asked JK a single question about this article. JK claims his articles and balderdash are written as a private citizen and not as PCI chairman. The Hindu article signs him off as former judge and PCI chairman and doesn’t anywhere carry a disclaimer stating these are his “personal” opinions as journals often do with controversial figures. Even JK’s Twitter account @KatjuPCI has PCI tagged to it. Is he tweeting as a private citizen or as PCI chairman? How does one know? Or is it a fake account? In which case he should have protested to Twitter. His profile also mentions his position and not that his tweets are personal opinions. In my earlier post on this topic I had wrongly mentioned JK has an opinion on everything under Pluto. No Mr. JK, it seems your favourite planet is Uranus.

For all the corruption and scams that the Congress has been mired in, JK doesn’t have much to say about it. His conduct and frequent outbursts and outrage does make one worry about the conduct of our judges. In recent times SC judges have received postings on various statutory bodies immediately on retirement. There isn’t any cooling period post retirement anymore. Meenakshi Lekhi pointed another important aspect of JK’s behaviour and political persuasions. With so much of bias and prejudice against the BJP, particularly Narendra Modi, how can a member of this party who has a complaint to be heard by the PCI chairman ever expect him to be fair and impartial? This alone is good enough reason for JK to resign or to be sacked.

The funniest part is that of all the people in the Congress party guess who rushes to defend JK? Yeah, it’s not just ironical but a good laugh. It’s Abhishek Singhvi, the man caught on camera in his chambers. Consequently, the SC Bar Association passed a resolution not to engage the services of Singhvi. There you go Mr. JK, a tainted lawyer is the only one to defend you and that says a lot, doesn’t it? Mind you, this Congress is the very same party that asked Anna Hazare to join politics if he wants to protest and criticise the govt or politicians. Anna is neither a former judge nor holds any statutory office. Yet, the Congress spokesman feels JK can keep mouthing nonsense and keep writing politically motivated articles.

The awful truth also is that without the “justice” tag, without the “PCI Chairman” tag and most of all, without the “anti-Modi” tag JK wouldn’t be allowed to write in the media. Not just writing, being anti-Modi is like a license to write with spurious analogies and information. This time everyone called JK’s bluff. It looks like the cats may survive their nine lives but spuriousity certainly killed the Katju.

  4. Yes, despite many telling me to ignore and not to dignify Katju with response, I totally agree that he is not just a boil on the breasts to be ignored - he is a malignant lump that need to be excised at the earliest. And there is a method in his madness. A well orchestrated move on his side and it is anyone guess who is the Conductor for whom he is playing.

  5. Dear Ravinar, I am BIG Modi fan and now an avid fan of your blog. But I can not completely agree with you when you say "I am a man who not only supports free speech but absolute free speech" when I see some times "This comment has been removed by the author".....However nasty, vulgar, demeaning, stupid, silly the comment is, it still enjoys the freedom of speech. It proves that when one has authority to suppress/ban/diminish something, the person instinctively engages to do that. You can prove me wrong by not deleting the comments on your blogs, otherwise I can see your ponytail swinging in the background (read Arindam Choudhury).... Apart from that I love your witty, sarcastic, shrewd, logical, factual, interesting writings and my every day begins with your tweets :)

First of all, I think you are confused. "Removed by author" means the commenter himself has deleted the comment and not me. Its possibly because the commenter wanted to edit and repost his comment. So you are reading it wrong.

If I delete a comment it would show as "removed by blog administrator". While on the topic.. This blog exercises certain language parameters and protection of privacy of information. The comment rules are specified quite clearly. Any comment not adhering to these rules can and will be deleted. Besides, please remember, while I am a fan of absolute free speech our LAWS do not allow it. I do not intend to break laws. If you wish to, that is a choice not available on this blog.

      Thanks

So anything you write against their news or business or views, it wont be posted while you have the free liberty to abuse anyone or even their family on comments section. While here, your comments will be posted until removed by admin. So, if you have an opinion not matching the authors thought, it wont be deleted but well responded. But something unusual like swearing etc., they will be deleted. "FOS" is great power and with great power comes great responsibility.

  11. Dear Ravinar,

I saw the discussion on Headlines Today you mentioned in the article. I have serious doubt that the childish anchor Rahul Kanwal and his management had to settle their account with Markandya Katju and hence he along with Miss. Meenkashi Lekhi took on Markandya Katju. Otherwise he also would have towed the line of other MSM TV channels in the name of objectivity.

I have seen this moron Rahul Kanwal talking nonsense on various other issues numerous times. You can ask about his nonsense to Mr. Shiv Khera, the management guru. Mr. Khera once scolded him on the TV and bluntly told him that your father is from Army, you better go and ask your father whatever you are talking is right. We never saw Mr. Shiv Khera after that on Headlines Today.

His performance with Justice Markandya Katju was exceptionally different on 18th Feb than his usual style. Even my wife noticed it, who is usually not interested in Politics.

    On another note:
It's is just astonishing after so many high level faux pas by Congressi politicians there hasn't been a single resignation/sacking. It's as if they are protecting each other, because if even dare to sack one of their own high office chums, they will spill all the dirty secrets of Congress into the public.

  26. apologies for posting something not related to the topic. but i need a forum to express my views so that this message can reach as much people as it can. LTTE chief prabhakaran's son was captured and killed ruthlessly by srilankan army during the war couple of years back. It is an accepted norm that surrendered soldiers and children should not be killed during the war. but in this case a kid all of 13 years was shot in close range after capturing just bcos he happened to be ltte chief's son.

Below is the comment I posted in “The Hindu” so called India’s National Newspaper. The cowards as expected didn’t approve it. It is a irony that these stupids are talking about freedom of expression.

“my heart goes out to this kid. what is his mistake? being the son of one of the most dreaded terrorist? is it right if somebody kills rajapakse's children because he is a criminal. my blood boils when i think this mass murderer was allowed in tirupati to worship. shame on him and on the indian govt for showing no spine even after the war.

    Hindu,
What is it that you have done when the war was taking place. over the past 30 years all that you have done is to support the srilankan govt in their war against ltte. you have never taken cognizance of the fact that it is the srilankan govt which has started the tirade against the tamils in the north. they were never given equal rights and were always treated as second class citizens.

    Hindu,
Please please atleast now start to think from the side of the oppressed people and do whatever you can to bring this criminal to justice. I sincerely wish and pray truth, fairness and justice prevails in the end.
    RIP BALACHANDRAN”

The Confidence of the people with wisdom of SC judges has taken a beating in the eyes of the Public with this moron.

There is a now a possible angle of collusion between the Media and Judiciary , the real questions of the AM Singhvi episode never came out. Wonder how Katju qualified to be a SC judge ?

BJP and Jaitley tell this puddle of mess to resign because of his continous deliverance of statements on everything under Uranus AND Pluto. They cite the ambivalent nature of his so-called statements under the garb of freedom of speech. Katju justifies this by sauing he, as a citizen of India, has the right to do so. Going by his rationale, a Veterinarian can as well serve as a Gynaecologist and perhaps as a heart surgeon.
It is really unbelievable as to how this idiotic self-proclaimed master of wisdom ever came to become a judge in the highest court of the land.
His foolishness is only transparent when he asks for the resignation of Jaitley and insists that AJ take political sanyas.
Someone should ask Katju why? I bet he would be scouring his mind to find a justifiable reason for the rest of his life.

  35. I do hope that another PCI (Pest Control India) swings into action and does something about pests like Katju. If ever there is someone whose face shows evil intent, it is this man. Many who have seen him rant on TV will vouch for this.

It is BJP's naivete that cost them power. They believed in the good sense of many in the MSM and came under the spell of honey-coated talk of fiberals. It was a costly mistake. The Congress, Left, MSM led by Prannoy Roy (with his gang) were feeling impotent without power and hatched a devious plot, the effects of which the country is reeling under right now.

The difference with NaMo is that he can see through these fiberals and will not let his guard down. This is what rankles them - because he challenges them and wins each time.

  36. Facts is, we've had bad judges on the benches ever since Indira Gandhi's times. I was recently looking up some stuff in the memoirs of a retired High Court judge, DS Tewatia. The language in the book may not be all that fluent, but he exposes some damning facts. The rot started with IG pole vaulting justice AN Ray to the CJ's post over the heads of a bunch of others in seniority. Ever since, judges have tried to ingratiate themselves with the politicians sitting at the top. To prove their loyalty, many judges gave outlandish judgments. An example: during the Emergency (when Tewatia was shunted off from Chandigarh to the Karnataka High Court for annoying Bansi Lal), some guy who had been arrested under the Emergency provisions challenged his detention. He said that he was the wrong guy. The father's name and even grandfather's name was different in the arrest warrant; he also produced proof. Tewatia gave notice to the State to reply on this but a loyal judge pre-empted him the very next day by ordering that a detention order, right or wrong, could not be challenged in any court. I wont be surprised if that judge went on achieve great things in his career, given the CONgress rule almost non-stop all these decades.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really wonder how so called SC judges are so casual in commenting sensitive issues. If he had any sense of shame ( if he still aware that he is retired SC judge) he would have resigned the moment he read Jaitley's article. His response makes me remember my childhood days where we used to argue why I should do it, you do it.

Sprinkled with valid points hides a propaganda. Modi Govt chucked him out-- taught in all foreign universities--he is a good human being--army, police are bad when it comes to rapes in delhi and north east--Police and state uses water cannons-- north east has no terrorism issue mentioned, just normal people wanting to be normal--Sexual repression--not a word of mention about Delhi CM, Congress or the PM anywhere when the discussion is about Delhi. It is so subtle and hard to detect. I now know for years The Hindu has fooled so many people with its eloquence and know it all take on issues. Just by words you can do far more damage than a visual. It doesn't scream or hammer ideas into your head but slips it in so subtly and slowly without notice.

  43. From the day one in office he is acting like congress agent. When people protested In Jantar Mantar, Ramlila and India gate he was lecturing Media to refrain from sensetionalization. But after holding a staturary post he is commenting like a politician. Arun Jaitly rightly pointed out that this is his thanks giving excercise to his boss who made him chairman of press council. Need such article to expose such ppl who get retirement scheme from gov and behave like their puppet.

  46. Dear Ravinar, Mr Katju's father (or probably grandfather) was involved in Ram Janambhumi Shilanyas movement in late 80's. He was also Allahabad HC judge. Not to say that his father was wrong, but just to prove the point that his own family has background of which he is talking against now a days. I have read this in one book by some bureaucrat, probably in the autobiography of Mr B G Deshmukh, A Cabinet Secretary Looks Back.
