Desperate Measures - Part 3

Disguised Dictatorship.

In Ye Olde England, often called a nation of shopkeepers, they had family names for businesses (which is now quite common everywhere). Be it a grocery store or a law firm most of it was run by family. You know, like Charles Dicken’s story “Dumby & Son” (no there is no spelling error in Dumby so don’t fault me) or the law firm ‘Smith, Smith & Smith’. This reminds me of an old Wodehouse-type joke about a phone-call:

Caller: May I talk to Smith
Operator: I am afraid Smith is not in the office.
Caller: Well then, can I talk to Smith?
Operator: Sir, Smith is busy right now in a meeting.
Caller: Fine, put me through to Smith
Operator: Sir, Smith is currently vacationing abroad.

Amazing, isn’t it? Each time the operator appears to know exactly which particular Smith the caller is referring to. So we have Gandhi, Gandhi & Gandhi running a small business in India. It’s called Congress!

After the Maoist attack in Chattisgarh in May 2013 which killed several Congress members the first response from Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh was “attack on democracy”. Taking that cue every Congress member and spokie screamed “attack on democracy”. It may sound harsh but these were clearly words from people who have scant respect or understanding of democracy. They have no respect for courts or judiciary. They overturn judgements by Constitutional amendments or ordinances. Because they like to fool people in this fashion a huge majority of Indians also live under the illusion we are a Democracy. Indians live in disguised dictatorship not democracy. Except for the periods when there has been a non-Congress govt at the Centre and during the tenure of PV Narasimha Rao as PM India has practically been a dictatorship. The latest round of nonsense engineered by Congis is to ban opinion polls because these are increasingly adverse to the party. Read this bit for starters:

Democracy, no doubt, is the best system if it is run by the best people living in the state. It is unfortunate that India’s democracy is run by the worst of its citizens. There are a few exceptions but they cannot alter the well-entrenched trends of India’s democratic culture. Let us state a few undeniable facts about India’s democracy. First, families and clans act as custodians of voters and political parties. Second, most voters in the rural areas do not cast votes of their own free will and many are not even aware of their basic fundamental rights. Third, corruption and coercion are part and parcel of India’s electoral process. Last, but not least, politics is deemed dirty and dangerous by law-abiding, educated citizens of India. Along with these facts, there are certain misperceptions about democracy that have purposely been inculcated in the minds of India are by politicians. These include: elections lead to the establishment of democracy, parliamentarians are true representatives of the people and voters cast their votes freely".

Disagree with any part of the above? There cannot be any denying that the Congress has been nothing more than the private estate of a family. This is true for many other parties but they don’t claim to own India the way Congress does. Now, the para above you just read was not written by me and you will also be shocked to learn that the description wasn’t written for India. It was written for Pakistan. I have just substituted Pakistan with India. Read the whole Tribune article to know why India can never be a democracy under the Congress party. When I refer to the Congress it mean Congress (I) which is what this party, created by Indira Gandhi is and not the original Congress which had Nehru, Sardar and Shastri.

The author of the Tribune article states further: “The above-mentioned facts, misperceptions and fault lines have produced an electoral system that creates governments incorrectly termed as democratically elected. The political party is the fundamental institution of any democracy and is supposed to be structured democratically. However, in India, major political parties are controlled by a few influential families” (I have substituted Pakistan with India again). Therefore, it is stupid to even imagine that a party which once campaigned for freedom having broken away as Congress (I) and permanently become the estate of one family even claims any belief in democracy. If democracy isn’t the foundation of a political party there is no way it can want democracy for the country. Simple? And that describes the various acts of Congress over the years perfectly.

In a severe mauling of the Constitution during the Emergency, Indira Gandhi brought in the 42nd Amendment in 1976 (with most of the Opposition in jail) that curbed fundamental rights, incorporated the words “socialist and secular” into it and curbed the powers of the courts. Although some of it was repealed by the subsequent govt it describes the Congress’ contempt for democracy like nothing else. In the US the First Amendment stands for absolute free speech, in India the First Amendment stands for restrictions on your speech. We are a democracy! In the satire-movie ‘The Dictator’ (2012) Sacha Baron Cohen, an African dictator under pressure to turn to democracy, explains the values and benefits of a dictatorship and asks Americans why they hate dictatorship. I consider it one of the best movie speeches (Video: 1.15 mins. Text below the video)

Why are you guys so anti-dictators? Imagine if America was a dictatorship. You could let 1 percent of the people have all the nation’s wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes and bailing them out when they gamble and lose. You could ignore the needs of the poor for health care and education. Your media would appear free, but would secretly be controlled by one person and his family. You could wiretap phones. You could torture foreign prisoners. You could have rigged elections. You could lie about why you go to war. You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group and no one would complain. You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests.

Which part of that speech isn’t true for India too? Which part of that speech tells you we aren’t already a dictatorship? Among modern democracies India is the only country where political opponents have been jailed without any genuine reason except that they protested misrule and corruption. We are a democracy! We have progressed so far as a brutal dictatorship that our govt even arrested and jailed Anna Hazare merely because he was going to protest. We are a democracy! We have a CM, Nitish Kumar, who is so paranoid and treats his State like a private fiefdom, that he dictates who should enter and who can campaign in his state. We are a democracy!

We have politicians making laws like 66A which can land you in jail for harsh criticism of Sonia Gandhi or mocking her. We are a democracy! We have the Shehzada telling poor people emotional crap like “airports and roads can’t feed you”. It doesn’t occur to the Shehzada that those who worked and laboured to build the roads and airports earned their bread honourably instead of crumbs being thrown at them by the ‘family’. In short, he’s telling them “Don’t bother fishing we will give you the fish”. We are a democracy! Please vote for me in the name and sacrifice of my Mummy who cries, My Daddy who was killed, my Daadi who was killed and my Great-Daada. We are a democracy! Vote for Smith, Smith & Smith!

The late Saddam Hussein and Idi Amin had many statues erected for themselves. Many roads and schemes were named after themselves. Cut to India; every second scheme is named after some Nehru-Gandhi family member. There is hardly any village, town or city where you won’t find statues of the ‘family’. Of course, we are still a democracy. And then when someone talks about honouring Sardar Patel they are upset. They want to own Sardar Patel too when the man would be the first to dump the current Congress (I) in the Arabian Sea. They call themselves “secular” while constantly dividing society by religion and caste through every policy and law they make. They give out laptops and mobiles like a Raja throwing gifts at his poor subjects. They believe in democracy! The fear-mongering is now at its peak. Anything threatening Smith, Smith & Smith… Err… Gandhi, Gandhi & Gandhi is now a threat to democracy.

The most amazing part of their story is that they then tell you that the other party or the other guy is pure evil. The last line of Cohen’s speech in the ‘The Dictator’ is one of the most important ones: “You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests” (Read lobbying, FSB, Communal Violence Bill, 66A blah blah). We have come so far as a democracy that we have now gone beyond fear-mongering. Political parties are actually colluding with terrorists to get a major opponent killed. Still believe we aren’t a dictatorship in disguise?

To be continued

They only want to use such laws against citizens when convenient.

  2. Fantastic Article. Ideological leanings aside, the only reason I would vote for BJP is that they are a truly cadre-based (read: democratic) party. Even the tallest leaders of the BJP mean nothing before the will of the cadre, which is why even somebody of the stature of Advani had to humbly bow out to make way for Modi.

Congress, in spite of it's battery of educated intellectuals have to bow before a semi-literate dynasty -- their will can be negated by a mere whimper from the overgrown baby who probably can't tie his own shoelaces. Imagine the plight of a country on which such a perverse system is thrust upon. If democracy in India has to survive, Congress must be wiped out!

It's more like "“Don’t bother fishing we will make you believe that we will give you the fish, and eventually convince you that there is nothing called fish"

  5. The speech by Sasha Baron Cohen in the movie The Dictator reflects on an undeniable truth that all democracies suffer from same problems and evils they seek to eliminate by ending dictatorship. I love the cartoon reproduced by you which says "Democracy is the freedom to elect our own dictators". In the context of India, I can say with full conviction that Indian democracy suffers from perennial problems that we keep electing dictators every five years and that has continued for nearly seven decades. NaMo does offer a ray of Hope. But I am not too confident of Indian democracy, in the long run we will go back to Gandhis Gandhis Gandhis and that I believe is the tragedy of India

  7. Very Hard Hitting and Very True !!

The seeds of this disguised dictatorship were sowed in times of "Democratic" Nehru when he made IG as Congress President when he was the PM. As Sardar died there was none to challenge him.

The disguised Dictators are scared of Modi and hence all this drama about him. They will take help of anyone and everyone to eliminate him in any which way. First they tried legal route, it did not work and now they are going for "direct action"

Keep up the good work and salute you for your herculean effort...

  11. Dear Ravinar Sir,
What you research and present to your readers isn't a rocket science, it lies just below our nose, but see How ignorant (or foolish) we are to go unaffected as if nothing is going to change us. And no other columnist or write in the MSM ever writes about this. We are reeling under inflation, price rise, terrorism, police brutality, mis-governance and all, but see our media is full of praises to the present Government. What made me laugh today that, our PM says " Even our foreign policy is guided by Secularism", huh...What does this B***S*** mean. Foreign policy guided by secularism !!!. Foreign policy guided by trade interests, Indians living in that country, cultural and scientific relations makes sense, but secularism, anyway.
On the other hand Bihar and biharis who are still known for their " Atithi Devo Bhav" (Guest are like Gods) attitude are being told by their incompetent and foul-mouthed Chief Minister to broom out all the outsiders.
And we still think we are a democracy..!!

It `advised'(warned) media not to repeat August,15 act of comparing PM`s speech with other political leaders(Modi). For that it invoked Section 5 of Cable Television networks (Regulation)act, 1995. In essence it warned the media not to show Narendra Modi`s mammoth rallies in live! This is congress mark `democracy'(dicatorship)!

  18. Congress is all set to fail and self destruct on its own with these type of anti democratic measures.

For a true democracy, we need a Independent Judiciary and press and a Strong opposition. We have a strong opposition, but I still need to see an Independent Judiciary and press countering this type of dictatorial measures.

Fortunately, we have an independent Social media, not yet touched, which will surely waken up the Judiciary and press from its deep slumber. Let us wait and watch the future course. I am hopeful that India shall still remain a democratic state.

  21. An apt satire on Khangress! They are fearing NaMo and BJP to an extent that even the DD National channel is showing the bitter remarks/responses of Khangress leaders on BJP and NaMo. This has never happened before. DD National was not supposed to cover the political fights between two parties and if the ruling govt has stooped to that level, will they have courage to cover the replies from the BJP cadres as well. if they have guts then let them have live coverage of both NaMo and RaGa's rallies and leave it to the citizens of country. Very wicked trick, I must say! As everyone is echoing, they can go to any level to prevent NDA coming back to power. It is our responsibility as an alert citizen to defy them doing so.

  25. One of the best ever by Ravinar. Congrats.. I am ashamed to call India as a true democracy. As a person who had traveled and lived overseas, I am dead sure that we can never ever equate ourselves with true democracies like UK,Canada, US,, Germany, Australia, Japan etc., Of course, we are much better compared to countries like Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Kenya , Nigeria , Pakistan etc., Look at the regional and national leaders we have!! So many caste and religion based parties, this is what we have achieved after 66 years of so called freedom. This is because, Indians have remained as slaves for over 800 years and it is very difficult to change that centuries old genes in a span of 66 years. Otherwise, where in a true democracy we have a pseudo PM ruling ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do not believe that Indians have been a slave nation in literal sense like having been bound by chains and shackles. It is a generalization we make when we say India was a slave nation for 800 years. It is just that, we did not care or worry enough as to who ruled over us.

If you look at history of this world, any nation being subjected to 800 years of slavery, ceases to exist. Are we still not on earth, intact with our culture, religion, languages, diversity, ways of life etc ? The fact that it still exists means, it is still possible to grow and develop beyond anyone's imagination.

Now coming back to democracy within India. It started as a borrowed democracy as we borrowed many ideas, concepts, fundamentals from other Nations. Now we are experimenting it ourselves and still evolving in a way to be suitable for our social, cultural and political scenario. Nothing is yet lost, if we see the kind of leaders who are emerging out of the current Political Scenario. I find a successful experiment over democracy having happened in Gujarat and even other states too. It has to extend to rest of the Country. I am an optimist and it will soon extend in 2014.

On the Pseudo PM ruling us - I can quote Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president. It is self explanatory -

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time"

    1. You have to realize that to do any significant good, Modi has to first come to power. The 'Statue of Unity' is a great way to garner support and get the farmer community directly involved in Nation building. It will give them a sense of pride when the steel/iron they contributed will be transformed into a magnificent monument.
Though 2500cr sounds a lot, I am sure Modi has already figured out a way this will be recovered without ultimately burdening the ex-chequer.

It will also generate a lot of employment.

      Delete
    2. Modi will soon be starting a Loha Sangraha Abhiyan from Dec-15th. It will be a mass movement of collecting tools from each and every village along with some history of village and its people captured in a digital format for the display at the Statue of Unity.

Now if you look at the idea behind this, it is symbolically uniting the whole country even at the Village level (grass root). In present situation, the country is going through lot of divisiveness. The divisiveness becomes more prominent in and around elections, with a particular caste/religion/community voting for a single party. Modi wants to counter it by this movement. I am sure, it will be a success, as he has had done lot of such novel experiments in the Gujarat Assembly elections.

Our country needs to be united for a common cause now - Loha Sangraha Abhiyan. (Collection of Old Iron tools from every village)

Cricket does used to unite this country together, but with the advent of IPL, I think it has lost that magic of Uniting factor.

Money for the statue is just 2500 Crore, which will soon be earned back, once the Statue completes and opens up for Public display. It is going to generate lot of employment and also give a boost to the Steel, Construction and Engineering Industry too. There could be many more ancillary industries too benefiting a lot from this.

    3. @AAR,

in case you are objecting to Rs. 2500 crores, please add up the money spent by various governments starting from president's office to a municipal chairman on the vehicle purchase. This one time investment sounds peanuts against the money spent on luxury vehicles at regular intervals. If you are still not satisfied, add up the fuel spending on them.

in case you are worried about Modi's time on this statue, I do not think Modi will oversee every detail of this project.

in case you are worried about Modi's focus on activities, I believe Modi is not like 'cry babies' crying at home, in parliament and in hospital to see through a bill. Of course purpose of cy babies is show casing. Since elevation to party campaign chief Modi working outside Gujarat. But there are no reports of any slackening of governance in Gujarat.

What worries me more is the trend rather than instance. The future governments even non-congress can use the same approach to impose the ideas of rulers on people.
As I mentioned earlier also Telangana propaganda was one such case. Today all political parties in the country ignored 5 crore people in AP and not allowing debates on purpose and implications of AP bifurcation.

//LUCKNOW: Flustered by the "less than satisfactory" public response to Rahul Gandhi's first few campaign rallies in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress pushed the panic button on Tuesday, drafting its UP in charge Madhusudan Mistry to ensure a better turnout in the next phase of the Amethi MP's election rallies.

The lack of numbers, especially at Hamirpur, was apparently noticed by Rahul. Although Jhansi MP and MoS for rural development, Pradeep Jain, along with Congress MLAs Gayadeen, Vivek Kumar Singh and Daljeet Singh, were entrusted with gathering crowds, the party was unable to fill up the rally grounds. Defending the poor turnout at Hamirpur, one leader said, "All efforts were made to mobilise the crowds.
