Children As Leverage - Part 1

Beggars realised long back that sending out children for collection made a lot of sense. The emotions that a begging child can bring out can move even the toughest of souls. The immoral afternoon tabloids and pirated book-sellers also found better use for them to sell their trash. But while the child-beggars exist across the country there are bigger beggars who do the begging in style and live a lavish life. But let’s start with some excerpts from an old article; around 24 years old. Let’s start with our original Jholawalas:

Jholawalas exist in groups and the look on their face is earnest. A genuine jholawala must have a cause. Silent Valley, Narmada Dam, pavement dwellers—or he can’t exist. As thousands perished during Bhopal’s lethal gas leak, many jholawalas took birth. ‘They are the ones who make a difference,” said one observer. “I take my hat off to them.” Several jholawalas, in fact, first rose during the Naxalite movement in the late ‘60s. They were marked by their passion and violent activism. They got beaten up, left colleges and went underground. When they resurfaced, they could no longer adjust to society. The originals are still floating around and have given rise to hundreds of imitators, nouveau-jholawalas, who are turned on by the romance of it all but are, thankfully, spared the heat and hardship… Generally, jholawalas are big drinkers—rum and water if they’re paying for it, and anything else if someone else is… They have little of western pop: they genuinely believe that Madonna is Christ’s mom… Like other human beings, jholawalas too are vulnerable to love. The lovers probably met at a relief camp during riots or in a protest march led by Swami Agnivesh. Jholawalas in love take long walks among ruins, have a civil wedding (or simply live together) and then go for a honeymoon to more distant ruins like Mandu, near Indore”.

That was from an article in India Today about Jholawalas written in 1989 (Do read the whole article here). The article describes how the Jholawala travelled on cycles or buses and sometimes parked his car and got on to buses when people were watching. All that changed since the economy was opened up in 1991. Our Jholawalas don’t travel on cycles or buses and some of them don’t even drive their own vehicles, they travel in SUVs and Pajeros. Think of many of them: Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy, Aruna Roy, Shabnam Hashmi, Teesta Setalvad, Harsh Mandar … Oh the list is too long. What’s common to all these commie jholas? They are all darlings of the media. They all own or are part of wealthy NGOs.

Shekhar Gupta of Indian Express reminds us of a startling fact: “Remember that one of those eight Maoists released in exchange for the abducted Malkangiri collector Vineel Krishna was A. Padma, wife of top Maoist Akkiraju Haragopal alias Ramakrishna. And she managed Aman Vedika, an orphanage run by activist and then NAC member Harsh Mander”. So, is it any surprise that some of these naxal sympathisers also concoct legislations for you from the NAC? And what does Harsh Mander do for a living? Oh you guessed it; he works for communal harmony, education of children and poverty alleviation. If only there were more Harsh Manders! Is it also any surprise why the Congress won’t seriously act against Maoists?

How does it start? Well, start off with some protests, scream at prominent spots like Jantar Mantar or Azad Maidan and voila, it turns on the tap of money that then flows like a river. And yes, almost all of them are Maoist and Naxal sympathisers. Some are also sympathisers of anti-nationals, terrorists and separatists. They create subtle terms to fool people like “moderate separatists”. Most of them also get the Magsaysay award.  Take a look at the pic from the India Today article I just quoted:

Ford Foundation? Hmmm! Does that remind you of someone? Ford Foundation now offers more than scholarships. They fund a lot of NGOs and dictate the agenda and the kind of protests they are willing to support. There are many other fund managers and fund-raising brokers too. A majority of these NGOs are scamsters who exist only to make money and act as hawala channels. But the ones most milking humanity and money are the ones who are or claim to be doing work for a better life for children. Take a look at this pic:

This is an image from the Sakya School in Gaya, Bihar run by an NGO called “Sakya Sujata Children’s Welfare Trust”. I am reminded of all the Miss Indias, Miss Worlds and Miss Universes who when asked a question about their dream tell us how they would like to see all children healthy, educated, free of illness blah blah. The NGOs sort of extend those Miss Indias’ dreams by doing the work on the ground. The website of Sakya would give you a great picture of what this little NGO is doing. Let’s read what the owner told someone else (The title of the article itself is shocking “Dummy NGOs exploit charity movement in India”):

Some NGOs in India stand accused of earning a living by pretending to be a charity. A number of schools set up to help the poorest of the poor are allegedly turning out to be fakes. The building and classrooms in a school in Bodh Gaya, eastern India, may look functional, but classes are rarely held here. That is because it exists only to attract foreign tourists to donate money to the school trustees. “If you think we’re running a business here, you’re quite right. This is how I feed myself,” admits Chandan Kumar Verma, a trustee of Sakya Sujata Children Welfare Trust. “By the way, there are other NGOs here who take money and don’t even have any facilities”…  “Sounds like a pity. I’m sure there’s good work being done here, and it’s bad if good work is being ruined because other people start cheating. Then people will be more careful where they give money to, and finally end up being bad for the people,” Thor, a tourist, told RT.

Nice, eh? He’s happy to be running the business and feed himself. The RT article was written in 2011 so maybe things have changed a bit but one doesn’t know. It’s not just small groups or individuals whose heart overflows with love for children. You have mega “sugar” daddies like CocaCola who join up with the ever-loss-making NDTV to promote toilets and stuff in schools. The saints that NDTV and Coke are they then rope in celebrities like Sachin Tendulkar and Aishwarya Rai for the “nautanki” on TV. Seriously, if Coke ever had the good of children at heart they would have shut down their business. Sugared drinks are the most useless pastime for kids. The consumption of these drinks, mostly in heavy doses, lead to obesity and improper food habits. Coke wants to catch them young as they say. Build a few bathrooms, donate a few desks or furniture, plaster your logo all over these and keep your brand in the child’s head from an early age and earn their lifelong loyalty to the product. That’s the general idea.

NDTV which has often held extremely negative programmes against these sugar-drinks (pesticides and all) don’t mind if Coke brings them a few bucks. After all, it’s all for children, no? What should concern everyone is why NDTV and Coke are seeking donations from the public? Coke is a giant MNC and can easily afford to do all this without public money. This is what I have called “stylish begging” in the name of children. From Bollywood to our media to politicians, everyone wants to do something for children – With your money! And there is more to it than just your money as we shall see in the next part.

To be continued...

  1. Great one Ravinar! Jholawalas are one of the main reason Indian economy went down to 4.8% from almost 10%. NAC is a curse on Indians with no accountability and full of commi ideologies that had taken the nation towards the drain. The earliest the NAC is scrapped and let the nation free of these 'radicals' the better for our great Bharat. "Begging in style and hold the Govt/Administration to ransom" with their ideologies, which has proven to be a failure. Nice one from you Ravinar!

  6. Great article. I would like to add my observation about these Jholawallas because of the close encounter with many of them. All such Jholawallas many a times earn a good Job in a International NGO funding agencies like UNICEF, CRY or numerous similar agencies.....they get their salaries in US dollars or at par with international executives, their children go to premier universities in US earn MBA's and join Multinational companies against whom their parents make agitations in India propagating leftist ideologies and romance with Naxalism.

One more observation, all such Jholawalas like classical Vocalist Kishori Amonkar or Kumar Gandharva and nobody else, because according to them they are the only two rebellious against the traditional Indian Classical Music (Gharanas)

  7. As always a superb expose of these frauds. And here's what happens at jholawala run schools: sexual abuse of children. In this case a school run by Harsh Mander.

  8. just because some of them have unscrupulous dealings doesn't mean every left leaning NGO is a corrupt exploit the poor front. even hindutva organisations have NGOS. heck isnt the RSS a sort of a ngo?? now what? they are true saints? or are you against all NGOS in general? its kinda dumb to oppose all of them, given many do true humanitarian work?? FYI i am against their leftist ideology too.

    2. @Ashwin

This post has nothing to do with religion nor does it say all NGOs are bad. You typically bring your religious prejudices here. Maybe some guilt feeling? Perhaps the phony NGOs working under the garb of Charity for Children and actually being involved in "Conversion" work weighs on your mind?

    3. religion?? what religion? ITS YOUR prejudices that are showiing :) i was simply stating that you targeted them with some instances of corruption because they are leftist, implying all leftist NGOs are corrupt. similarly merely because i happen to find some hindutva NGOS being corrupt deosn;t mean they all are money crazy theives. i was implying their ideology , not religion. but hey when you cant stand criticism of anyone ideologically similar to you, you simply divert the conversation into some hindu vs christian communal talk huh?? nice move man.

review ur own comment before submitting. What is the need to use "even hindutva organizations..."? And now you say what religion.
U simply assumed that Ravinar "dumbly" opposes all and went on ranting.
Ravinar was right! Some guilt of misuse making u blabber.

    5. Leftist/Communist leaders wear a mask of honesty as individuals while their organisations, be it NGOs or political parties are corrupt to the core.Could u explain what is the source of income for Pinaryi Vijayan or the estwhile leader EMS. Right from salt to camphor for their kitchen is given by the party. Their children study in foreign universities.Their jaunts abroad with family are financed by party. Ask any cadre how this happens and you can be attacked. But the same commies point to corrupt individuals in other parties.Any shady decision taken by them will be attributed to party decision although corrupt individual are behind it.Ask about 'noakku Kooli'(vigil charges) they say the party is against it and those who are doing it are not violating party orders. So obfuscation does not make a leftist organisation honest. Others are corrupt but they do not hide behind party decisions.

    6. @Ashwin: Reading your comment (rather I should say 'rant with unnecessary "??") ... it is clear you have either a guilt feeling or a victimhood feeling (as the blog talks about some NGOs are involved in conversion to Christianity) .. or else why would you go on a tangent like this.. where is the article saying all NGOs are bad ? If you have any insight to share on any more NGOs which are "not saints" you should have shared that for readers' benefit ... instead you start ranting "Hindutva organizations", "RSS" to try and make yourself feel better. If you take such shortcuts you will never be able to look beyond your biases and will always think like a "MOB"

  9. a smart revolution by the right ( or should I say righteous ) is the only solution. the right need to come together and call every bluff of those that are not nationalists . Unity and concerted action is the key. Despite wrong doings by these left liberal NGO's, these are all united. they never criticise one another. they close their ranks and perpetrate their agenda.
Hindus need to unite across the length and breadth of this country and be focussed on the agenda of regime change.

    1. May your day dream come true! 'Bechara Janta Party' leaders are not in the mood to exploit the mood of the nation. They are busy opposing OBC Modi becoming PM probable and also they had to put a united fight to take the scams of congi/UPA govts to the public, which they are miserably failing. The old one upping one CM against another CM of their party expose their sick mentality. 'United we stand and diverse we fall' the old proverb doesn't seem to have opened up their mind. Let us hope better sense prevail and some much needed change is brought through.

    2. He was careful in not directly naming Arvind krejriwal, but he did it indirectly else it would have given complete different meaning to this article. Never understood there are hundreds of corrupts, murderers, thieves, in govt. around you but fanatical orthodox point fingers at AK who is not yet part of govt. Main reason is corrupt politicians who does every wrong business and allow others to do it under the organisation 'NGO'.. NGO was supposed to be good like Govt. but today both are in bad shape courtesy of Govt.

I always had a doubt about this goons.

  13. One of the hallmarks of leftist thinking is, maintian status quo and oppose any change. If at all any change is necessary, we leftist will do it.If anybody tries to bring change we will oppose it.Nobody else in the world has the right to change status quo.Our own brain works slowly but the world has to wait for us to bring any change. We prop up each other as intellectuals and the world must listen to us.We have permanent enemies who help keep our flocks together. These are enemies for all seasons. If we change our stance, nobody have the right to question us without endangering their own lives. We make a living out of our perceived intellectual mind.We have to put up in seats of power on the strength of our perceived intellgence. We dont like elections or supremacy of courts. We will fight for the right to expression for members of our own ilk while opposing the same right for others against us.Our sermons have to be accepted without questions.

  17. nice one. i just want to share one incident in recent past which may be relevant in this context. i went to a club famous in kolkata. i met one businessman who was fully drunk and after knowing my office and position he gave me a unique proposal. i am putting the words exactly what he said...." give resignation and join me.we will manage around 500cr. from bank submitting fake scheme. don't worry, i have channels. we will donate around 100cr.to some paritcular political parties, donate around 100cr. to some particular NGOs and rest is ours. they will protect us if any problem occurs though chance is negligible." i just want to conclude with one fact that this is not a recent incident. i am listening to such schemes for more than 30yrs and it works fine in india.

  19. The article is very manipulative, using some examples of rotten NGO's normaly run by kith and kin of local politician and bureaucrat the author tries to puts Harsh Mandar, Shabnam Hashmi, Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy, Aruna Roy in the same league.
Yet he says nothing how anything he says in the article is related to them or if they have ever been caught in any misdoing. He does uses Harsh Mandar's name obviously as he is heading food security commission appointed by government.
There are thousand of honest officers working for the government irrespective of who is running the govt.
for reader's knowledge Harsh Mander is a IAS officer who resigned from civil services after Gujarat riots as felt ashamed of being part of government. At that time also he was heading Action Aid in India on deputation. After Gujarat riots he was a major force in the bringing Peace building in the agenda of development agencies.
If he wanted he would have many lucrative posting but he decided to work for Peace Building and the NGO DIL Se that works in Delhi running children's home has been recognized for their good work and they are now starting in Hyderabad as their model is being considered successful.
Each of the name Aruna Roy, Shabnam Hashmi,Medha Patkar, Arundhati Roy stands for freedom and justice. They continue to inspire huge number of social workers across the country. None of them have ever been seen to enjoy any luxery , they travel far and wide in teh remotest of area which I am sure the author may not have even heard about. They are made of their sweat and blood.
I don't know any of them personaly but being in the field of development sector for last 13 years and having worked in many parts of INdia including Rajsthan, GUjarat, Maharashatra, AP, UP. I have seen and experience their work and conviction.
It's sad how author has used stereotype of social workers to malign some very respectable names!

really lame reply. You accept that you have never personally met these NGO's & your assumptions are solely based on what was served to you by your seniors. How can you come up with such a lame reply even when the author has already covered the topics you raised with enough supportive evidences ? It seems you continue to parrot the same lines which have been taught to you through continuous propoganda.

    1. I would like to add here that nobody is challanging the conviction & hard work of any NGO. Unfortunately the issue of debate is whether the NGO's are using the funds for intended cause ? whether the NGO's are using the funds for forced & paid up conversion ? whether the NGO's are undermining the demography & security of our country ? Please think on these lines also & ask the questions to your seniors !I am sure you will get kicked out.

Even I want to ask Sachin that if he is really so nice and good, why does he NOT stop endorsing Pepsi/Coke.
In fact, this question extends to all cricketers who sell themselves for misleading the youth.

On one side, MSD is advocating for so called energy drinks like Boost and on the other hand, I remember, in the recent series against Australia, when it was very humid and he was getting tired, he ate Banana! Why these double standards MSD? Do you have so less money?!

  22. This is what the 11th June 2011 issue of Uday India talks about the collusion between World Vision, maoists and evangelists..
"World Vision is one of the organizations that is blamed by natives as the chief instigator. In 2008, a Hindu monk and four others were gunned down on a Hindu holiday for their work in counteracting the Christian proselytizing. The Maoists issued a statement claiming responsibility for the killing, and stated that there was pressure from Christians to eliminate the eighty-year-old Hindu monk. Prior to the killing of the monk there were provocative speeches made by Christians inciting violence against him. The Evangelical-Maoist connection triggered Hindu-Christian violence. This provided the evangelical machinery with a huge opportunity to generate atrocity literature for use in international forums, and to raise more funds in the West for ‘saving innocent Christians’ in India."

  25. Many NGOs give prominent schools fund-collection-forms and instruct them to give it to children to collect money from family, friends & others. And it is mandatory. I don't know if it this kind of activity is approved by the department of education. But it is mandatory for the children to collect money. Highest collector is given a certificate & a medal.
NGOs fight against child labour. Isn't this labour?
