Children As Leverage - Part 2

The fountainhead of corruption is always at the top of heap in the govt. For over 9 years the Congotri of corruption has supported and encouraged many bogus NGOs who ran political campaigns for them. It’s only when some of these NGOs started using their money to protest the UPA’s pet projects that they retaliated. “Govt bans 600 NGOs” says Livemint. The protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant brought about more scrutiny. “Church role in Kudankulam protests merits wider probe” says Firstpost. “Govt bans 72 NGOs from receiving foreign contribution” says Indian Express. An online magazine Uday India files a frightening report about foreign funding of NGOs, especially of the Christian variety, in the context of Kudankulam. Most of these NGOs may or may not be doing some good but their objective is not a secret anymore; it is simply politics, lobbying and religious conversion.

There is something even more alarming. The site VigilOnline talks about a very dangerous trend of connections between NGOs, foreign funding and activists. The book (pic) is said to be published after a great deal of research by Radha Rajan and Krishen Kak. The report at VigilOnline says: “The book is a blistering attack of some of our leading NGOs and activists and documents their treasonous agenda for our country, listing in convincing detail their foreign sponsorships, donors and funds. The foreign focus is on the USA and Muslim and Christian organizations based there, that promote and finance Nehruvian secularism in Hindustan through their Indian stooges, of whom the book identifies Harsh Mander as representative…. This offering of V'mala exposes some more linkages of what in the book is called the Manderweb - with Harsh Mander in the centre of the web… IMC is connected to the jihadi Lashkar-e-Toiba, and the L-e-T is connected to Pakistan's ISI. Now, Refugee Watch, in its same section, goes on to report that "AIM intends to forge links with progressive Indians and has been working on establishing links with Pakistani Americans." Both Harsh Mander and Aruna Roy, as eminent Nehruvian secularists, are certainly "progressive Indians". These are stray excerpts so I recommend that you read the whole article at VigilOnline for proper context and clarity. Most of these NGOs invariably are hearts that bleed for children. And that precisely is our context.

So looks like this guy Harsh Mander is all over the place, isn’t he? And yet he was in the policy drafting body of NAC, he runs multiple NGOs. One of his NGOs was headed by an arrested Maoist terrorist who was released as ransom. One of his NGO outlets has been accused of “Abuse alleged at Children home”. Yet this man roams free with no investigation against him and no scrutiny of any of his NGO “firms”. Oh yeah… he’s a darling of NDTV and CNN-IBN. Why so much latitude? Well, he was one of the pioneers of the anti-Modi campaigns and a Congress helper. Neither NDTV nor CNN-IBN ever questioned him on any of his NGOs’ activities. After all, he’s doing a world of good for children too, isn’t he? Is that all? No! In an extensive investigation DeshGujarat, an online news site, reports Harsh Mander’s NGO businesses received over 12 Crores of donations in two financial years through a maze of organisations. Take a good look at the report. A large chunk of it is for “welfare of children”. Did someone say ‘stylish begging’? Harsh Mander gave up his IAS job for all this. Seems quite a sensible guy!

It’s a fashion for celebrities to somehow associate themselves with some charity for children. Let’s not doubt their motives; they may be well-intentioned and not everyone is looking deep into what every NGO is doing and shouldn’t be expected to. However, I would certainly set a different measure for news media celebs who are in the business of looking deeper into everything. Here’s Rajdeep Sardesai doing an interview with World Vision (WV), a charity he supports. He has very kind words to say and you can watch and listen to the full interaction on Youtube. If Rajdeep is so strongly endorsing World Vision do you expect that he or CNN-IBN ever honestly investigate WV if some issue or report crops up? On the contrary, our channels are more known for covering up misdeeds of the parties and organisations they support. Tehelka reports and stings are ones that our media frequently uses to target a certain politician and a party. But there is a Tehelka guy who seems to have made a report on WV for CNN-IBN which they reportedly never carried.

V.K. Shashikumar’s report can be read here in full. I do not vouch for the introduction part but would Rajdeep read and respond to such reports? I doubt it, because it would destroy his credibility of all the “morals” he claims in the video I mentioned above. The report suggests that WV is not just into children’s welfare but a large-scale religious conversion operation. This is true of many tribal areas where missionaries operate and which has been the cause of constant conflict in such areas. I quote a report of 2002 from this article which mentions an event in Dahod (Gujarat) a few months after the riots:

Take, for instance, World Vision New Zealand’s report (4 September 2002) on the funding of ADP in Dahod, Gujarat. Under the head, “spiritual development” the report states: “Held a vacation Bible school for 150 children from different villages. The children participated in games, Bible quizzes, drama and other activities. Organised a one-day spiritual retreat for 40 young people and a children’s Christmas party. Each of Dahod’s 45 villages chose five needy children to attend the party.” In Dumaria, Banka district, eastern Bihar, “the ADP supports local churches by running leadership-training courses for pastors and church leaders”.

Now, WV advertises all over the net (including on this blog site through Google) on how you can lift a child out of poverty with as low as Rs.800/- What part of lifting a child out of poverty involves religion? What part of formal education of a child involves religion? I have absolutely no problems if WV wants to preach religion. Why should they preach it with your money? Most of their money in India comes from people who contribute for education and a healthy life for children, not for religious preaching or conversion. The answer is simple! Just like Coca-Cola wants to catch them young, conversions too are easy if you catch them young. Will Rajdeep Sardesai look at all the reports on activities of WV and air a report? Oh no… their heart CRIES for children, you see!

CRY is appropriate. Sometimes it goes by ‘Child Relief & You’ and sometimes as “Child Rights & You’. I am not sure which one is in vogue. This organisation started off mostly selling greeting cards to people and corporates to generate funds for their activities. Quite a noble and fair way one would say. Since the Card business invaded India some decades ago all kinds of days became fashionable. Mother’s day, Father’s day, Kissing day, Flowers day, Valentine’s day, Grandpa’s day, Grandma’s day and we always had that Children’s day too. But there is a shocking report on CRY diverting its funds to other causes that hardly have anything to do with children. Once again, DeshGujarat reports some group called MARAG is protesting a Special Investment Region in Gujarat. Of the 1.12 crores received by this group to carry out their agitation it is reported that 1.03 crores came from CRY, another Children’s NGO called ‘Save the Children’ and a Swiss Agency.

That there are foreign forces and corrupt people who are involved in political games in projects in India is definitely a dangerous trend. But if organisations raising money in the name of children are using it for purposes other than those stated in their objectives and made public to donors then it’s a serious crime of using children as leverage. The Chief Information Commissioner has just brought certain political parties under RTI. While it may be challenged in court there is justification for bringing NGOs too under RTI. Many of these NGOs use public money, govt money and some even use hawala money. Many are also ‘benami’ NGOs. While not all NGOs are criminals, a huge number of them are slowly starting to show up being involved in financial crimes and acting with political motives. In this context the ones to be most concerned about is those who use children as leverage. Our media will never report on their deeds, they are part of the crime.

Totally agree with this.. They should openly tell the donors about their religious propaganda and let them decide if they want to donate or not....

    1. How can they do it.... if they declare their actual motives, they can not talk of "Aman Biradari", can not question about so called saffron brigade and more importantly the educated young lot will not donate money no? They will not do anything to hamper the growth of their business!

  2. After going through this page i find myself guilty of helping these ngos'.for the last few years i was (bonafide)giving donations to these orgs-and one is as recently as on monday to some ngo by the name 'sense international'.and they were asking for helping the deaf and blind children in education.
Will have to be careful in the future, but i wont be knowing if my contribition will reach the person who i intended to help.

    1. Best way is to help somebody/some organisation who is near you and you can vouch for/monitor it. In no case international orgs who has large sums of money to advertise. Why not help poor relatives, people in your mohalla, people in your village/city.

    2. @SLC: That is best approach, help some one who needs help directly, rather donating to these orgs.

    3. I stopped donating these International orgabisations long back. even when I go to temple, I will give money directly to Pujari and the workers instead of buying ticket of the endownment board, that only goes to the govt. kitty for Hajj subsidies.
Similarly If I want to donate, I go to the nearest lesser known ved patashala who give free education and food for the incumbents.

If the temple funds are rightfully given to the Hindu Community, the missionaries and their front end NGO.s will have to close their shops. No hindu need to queue up for their crumbs.I think in a hind sight is was a deliberate policy initiated by Nehru to distroy Hindus. This shameless govt still calls itself secular and there are hindu morons proud of this tag.Pls desist from availing any paid offerings and services at endowment board managed temples. That is the only way forward.

    5. @hemant, always its better to donate to those whom u r sure that they r in need. Else, its always the mediators(at any level, may it be local or international)
Not just donating, but making it sure that donations reach out to the needy is also very very important. Its better to look around in our own surroundings and find out the needy n help them out, may be a relative/friend/ person next door/ subordinate's family....

More importantly, the donation need not have to be in terms of MONEY only it could be in any form, it's better to buy the things and handing it over directly to those in need (like buy books n other stuffs and distributing it directly to the needy kids)

  3. The modus operandi is the same: "Good morning sir! We are from ....Can you spare a few moments?" Then the spiel. (1) All of them swear they are not Xtian orgs. (2) They will not just accept your donation: they will point to schemes and INCREASE yr donation. (3) Next the phone calls: from all over India. They hv practiced their trade/art well. (4)Always deadlines and always in a hurry. (5) Young men/ women working do not/may not know their organization completely.(6) Try to enter societies even though we hv boards put up. Hv now started slamming the door and calling security to evict them.

  4. Excellent article. I would recommend people who read this to read "Breaking India" by Rajiv Malhotra, where he clearly with loads and loads of evidence has striped naked these hidden agenda of these NGOs, which is nothing but conversion.
One read through the book will expose right from Ford foundation or world vision to the lesser known tamil film director (who nowadays is sharing stage with the likes of Yasin Malik).
He clearly elaborates on how these christian funded NGOs are used to first kill our tradition and foster enmity among community and later divide them in communal lines to ultimately convert them to Christianity. Having said that I am absolutely not against conversion on will but this is conversion by deceit.
Rajiv also elaborates how these NGOs are working towards breaking India as Dravidistan, Dalitistan and Mughalistan and there active role in creating atrocity literatures on behalf of world bodies, which in turn lobbies to put pressures over India through Human Rights groups etc.
This book is a must read for every Indian and Hindu in particular.

  5. It's been believed by many people that Rajdeep is a born Christian (his father or grand-father converted) with a Hindu name. He is part of his churchs Choir Group. Although at times he behaves weird like "Eating beef but a proud Hindu" message on twitter once, one thing is for sure, even if he is not a christian he does have biased opinions and he wont care for anything other than himself and his bank balance.

These evangelicals and assorted anarchists would not have this opportunity if our religious and cultural organisations focused more on spending money for building schools, clinics and recreational/community facilties, rather than building ever grander temples, organising yajnas and feasts, and generally supporting irresponsible and wasteful revelry in Ganesh mandaps.

Late Mrs.Indira Gandhi and her Italian daughter-in-law, Sonia, in their roughly 25 years of rule (combined), totally polluted India and the great Indian dream of Gandhi and other freedom fighters.Today you can see mafia, crooks, swindlers anywhere and everywhere, right from the vegetable-seller to NGOs/media/corporates/neta/babus/soldiers/sportsmen, you name it.Probably, the history will treat them with the contempt they deserve.

One cannot blame less educated and divided voters only have led us to the threshold of a failed democracy. Ego and selfishness of opposition leaders are equally responsible. Did voters not give chance to Morarji,V.P.Singh or Vajpayee?

    1. Dear Terry John,

I think its not fair to name Vajpayee along with Morarji Desai & VP Singh. The biggest difference is that the parties which Morarji & VP worked are non-existent. On other hand BJP is still growing in south & east. Mr Vajpayee & NAMO represents a true democratic & progressive opposition which is rarity in today's world considering India's colonial past & corrupt & anti-India politics of Congress for half century.

  10. Brilliant and compassionate piece. There are good NGOs but very, very few. Now we find GONGOS (government ngos), PINGOS (private sector/industry ngos) and more recently PANGOS (partenership ngos). All of them are working to save something - used to be the whale, the environment. If you follow NGO money, you'll see a parallel between a global/national agenda. Using children is reprehensible. Most NGOs don't know which way is up, but they sure know the way to the bank. I

Everyone should try this form of donation too.

    3. I have been a regular donor to some of the below organizations and can say with certain confidence that the funds don't get misused or for activities against our religion and culture. They are:-

      1) Charities run by Ramakrishna Mission. There are lot schemes and programs run by the mission which are doing a yeomen service to the poor and needy. In addition there are honest individuals who are admirers of the mission are doing social service inspired by words of Swami Vivekananda. Two such associations are, the School for poor in Bangalore & an hospital for the needy in Shivahalli (a village near Bangalore) run bu a group of devotees

      2) Sankara eye trust
      3) Ramana school of blind
      4) Prani daya sangha
      5) ISKCON's Akshaya Patra Scheme

The last organisation has it share of controversies but's doing a good job when it comes to the Akshaya Patra Scheme. At least I am rest assured that my hard earned money is not used against my religion/culture which is dear to me.

    Children As Leverage :
very rightly said children are business from beggars to big celebrities...telling more on beggars
I read a post some time back and after thinking and discussing with many friends seems true.

Notice a beggar with small child. Child would always be sleeping never awake, why ???
My friend even tried to trace same beggar for few hour.
It seems those small child are on drug and just used for the sake of begging and they are not even their own and get exchanged with other beggars in a group.
Guys simple request, if you really want to help, please also help with your time and not just with your money.

  17. It is sad that the tool used for conversion is denigration and the timing when one is most vulnerable - childhood, when a person is very sick or when one is struck by a natural calamity (this would never have happened to you if you had believed in our God!). The abysmal levels to which these people stoop to meet their religious conversion targets! And since they use denigration as a tool, they sow the seeds of hatred among the converted. Now they want to ensure that it is easy to meet their targets by demanding reservation for converts and yes, a certain party is ready to oblige! Congress will sell this country to the highest bidder soon unless we do something about it. It is a wake up call for all right-thinking countrymen to throw this vile party out of power. I stay in an up-market apartment complex and there was this priest from US who was staying here and his son would not mingle even with the upper middle-class Indian kids - he was that snooty. His dad however would take him on weekend outings and shoot pictures of him seemingly frolicking with poor, dark-complexioned kids in villages and send the photos back home for more donations to pour in! And the priest had entered India on a BPO trainer visa! That is another huge scam and essentially a licence to all types of thugs to come and disturb the social harmony here.

    1. In some BPO's in India , active religious proselytisation of the vulnerable youth just out of high school is carried out by Westerners using pressure tactics. The Westerner trainers and the brown sahib/sahiba HR managers collude in getting the bonded laborers to convert as a tacit quid-pro-quo for releasing them from service bond to enable them to apply for admission to university. I know this first hand and maybe you do too. But our Manmohan Singh wants water tight BPO's where no ordinary employee is to be allowed to take information out, even scribbled notings on any piece of paper. Banana.

  18. @shashi, how much ever we may detest conversions of hindus into other folds - it is more the fault of us hindus that we are not united and farsighted enough. Why would not someone convert to another religion if it takes care of their immediate survival and also livlihood? The west coast of india has been gradually getting converted to islam for perks of job in middle east; there are wn masse conversions to christianity in south and central india as they give liberal financial incentives. Ysr reddy, karunanidhi are christians. Hindus will need to understand the virtue of selfishness and the value of money power in a materialistic world. One has to be incredibly smart, focused and objective to win against wealthy evangelists who already have a headstart

Our temple funds that run to several thousand crores and which should have been rightfully used for the welfare of the communities in the Hindu fold, is siphoned off by the so called secular govts.I have rarely heard of a temple providing scholorship for a hindu student or financing the education of a poor Hindu child. There are no orphanages run by Hindu temples. How will people respect a temple as of today with hardly any support to its followers.Today temples are a one way traffic as far as wealth donated by devotees go.Are we not made to grovel before the minorities for even our basic needs while our rightful community revenue goes to fund Haj pilgrims and the likes. I think even BJP must be made to declare in their manifesto that Hindu temples will be freed from the stranglehold of the govts.

    1. @anand, Yes. that should be one of the top priorities. The funds raised by Hindu temples should be administered and managed by the respective hindu trust only. But then barring a few voices here and there, there is no concerted efforts towards this. This does not even figure in any public discourse or news. There was a hindu dharma sabha held sometime last year and they had set freedom of hindu temple endowments/trusts from government control. Not sure how much progress has got done. Otherwise it would forever remain an uneven playing field. There are some speeches of the Late Shri Rajiv Dixit on youtube that bring out glaringly how successive governments have been anti-hindu and been giving sops to Foreign agencies and NGO's.

  26. Duping the public by collecting donations in the name of the poor is a multi-billion corporate industry. One corporate firm which in India teams up with so-called charity NGO's for collective "begging" is (Americas) Whirlpool which has collaborated with NGO "goonj" that seeks donations from the public for underpreviliged and homeless children. The same Whirlpool which gave Women Award with much fanfare for her social work to Teesta Seetalwad who commited perjury in supreme court (by signing Zaheera Shaikh's affidavit which was filed in the Supreme Court in CRL.M.P. No. 1250-1253/2004) and allegedly goaded many many unsuspecting Muslims to sign fake affidavits incriminating the role of innocent Hindus in killing of Muslims, pressurising them to name just about 'any Hindu with whom they might wish to settle old scores" by dangling the carrot of generous monetary donation from out of the fund donated by Communist parties as has been alleged by former accomplices and employees such as Mr. Rais Khan and Yasmeen Banu (Best Bakery prime prosecution Witness) in various affidavits etc.

I have personally witnessed that in India Church-affiliated Foreign-based funding agencies with covert Christianising agendas engage in subversive activities much beyond the logical ambit of religion, as for example, brainwashing children in part-time schools about purported merits of FDI in retail, organised agriculture, corporatisation of healthcare and education. Children and adults are first taught to regard their neighbours in native society as imbecile and polluted heathens, and the foreign pastors as white angels, and in due course beguiled into unquestioningly take the pastors' corporate propaganda as the gospel truth. World over, the Church-Corporate Mafia gets governments, police departments and judiciary to enact legislation criminalising begging by individuals, and even to outlaw avtivities like selling utility items at traffic lights which are dubbed fronts for begging; and then it makes a killing from robbing the public through donations in the name of taking care of the poor, besides accomplishing a host of subversive agendas.

    ReplyDelete
  27. CRY has admitted that it pays a share of the money collected through donations from the public as "collection fees" to its "agents" who collect that money. The morality of such practices is highly debatable.
Corporation Bank, a nationalised bank originally based in Mangalore but now having a pan-India presence, had been donating a share of the money earned as interest from depositors' money to CRY

  28. Many of the evangelist NGO's running child-shelters and orphanages not only swindle money out of people's pockets, but also harm the very children they are supposed to be helping. Most of the inmates have been brought by police etc. and are orphans but they also include those having living parents such as street children/ children accused and sentenced for petty crimes like having filed false compensation claims or having travelled without ticket. Andhra Pradesh is the hub of these NGO's activity with 1000's of registered/ unregistered evangelist Child-care centres operatinng there. Now these same units are spreading their tentacles in Noida, U.P and Jharkhand also. They run an organised adoption racket for placement of children into permanent custody of christian parents, and hundreds are sent abroad to Western countries, where some have been definitely known to have been treated as slaves (domestic servants)by the adopting household. That is not surprising, given that even Russian ((European)children who bear physical semblance to Western adopters have also been very badly treated, thrashed and sexually abused in their new homes.

  29. Many years ago, when TV ads of CRY had recently appeared, some(?sales)representatives from CRY came to my home. They came 'stylishly begging' for an 'adopt a child by a mnthly/one time allowance' type 'scheme' in the name of running an education program for the 'children of the poor' in our city. My mother asked them about the specific whereabouts of these centres and their working hours, so that she may visit them.... they just kept diverting the topic... She was not earning at that point and did not want to put money in unreliable hands; however she wanted to help a genuine cause... So she offered her services as a teacher ( she is an MSc,PhD in Physics!)and was FLATLY REFUSED. They kept insisting on the money...
