Pots & Panellists

Pots and Pans have a great history about them. We can’t live without them and they aren’t just things in the kitchen. Toddlers and kids find endless joy and banging them all the time. Pots and Pans have been used to celebrate the New Year and people bang them to even keep evil spirits away. It would have been nice if evil could really be kept away with just pots and pans. In the small narrow alleys of many old cities in India people use pots and pans to warn the arrival of police during agitations. Last year the Argentinians had their own TeamAnna moment when their citizens agitated against corruption; crime and inflation (see pic). And what did they do it with? Pots and pans, of course! After all, in the global village there is something indeed that unites all of us. Pots and pans create a lot of noise, draw a lot of attention and numb our heads. There’s even a family song about “Singin’ in the kitchen, bangin’ on the pots and pans” (Youtube) which was a chart hit.

Recently on Twitter an interesting question came up about our panellists on nightly news debates. Many didn’t know that these panellists are not “free”; they are “paid” to appear on TV channels. Everyone, from Swapan Dasgupta to Pooja Bedi, all are paid for appearances and their views on TV. Let me caution you. There is nothing wrong or unethical about this. If SwapanD writes for a column for a newspaper he would be paid for it, so would a Shobha De. They can, of course, volunteer a free-appearance. The exceptions to payments are usually spokies of the govt and political parties. These spokies usually turn up to defend their party positions on debates. This could also be true for others who are “defending” allegations against them. But they too can be paid if there are featured shows like ‘The Big Fight’ on NDTV. This is not true for interviews. For instance, Kanchan Gupta’s Twitter account was listed to be blocked last year by Sibal & Co. So when he was interviewed by some channels on the topic he doesn’t appear as a panellist but as one being interviewed.

All our TV channels have a database of panellists. Let me explain. Supposing a channel is doing a debate on politics the ‘booker’ (the guy who books the panellists for the show) types in “Politics” as a search-term into the database and up come Vinod Sharma, SwapanD and so on. You type “Woman” and you would probably get Ranjana Mukherjee, Pooja Bedi. How would you ever learn to even outrage unless you’ve heard Pooja Bedi? You type “Anything on Women” you are guaranteed to get Mamta Sharma of the NCW. You search “Elections”... Yeah you guessed right, you’ll get Yogendra Yadav & Co. You type “Islam”; you will likely get Zakir Naik and Shah Rukh Khan. You type “Expert on everythingyou’ll get only one name: Suhel Seth. You type in “Gujarat & Modi” … Oh that’s a very long list and the specialists run into thousands to be listed here. You type “Unwanted” you will definitely get MediaCrooks! That’s the way it works and it’s as simple as that. We do owe much of your current-affairs education to all these panellists.

Then there are other shows aired on TV which are from a programme held elsewhere. These shows too employ panellists and speakers. This is where the usual TV host or anchor gets lucky. He or she too gets paid like a regular panellist and the guests get paid even more handsomely for their appearance and their lecture. This pic is from the HT Summit 2012. See the nice guy on the left? And the nice guy on the right? Both get paid for this appearance. The wonderful part is that these guys can be paid with YOUR money. So next time you run across such a show on TV, the least you can do is watch it since you’ve indirectly and unknowingly paid for it already. (Read about HTSummit2012). So you see, even if you missed out playing with pots and pans as a child or never banged those in an agitation, you’ve lost nothing. You get it every night on your TV.

If you think all panellists are greedy and appear only for money then that’s being very unkind. All of them have other professional pursuits from which they earn enough and don’t depend on the panellist’s fee for survival. Do some people have enough motivation to appear on a TV debate without a payment? Absolutely! Recognise the faces in this pic? All of them are champions of justice and the fight for justice needs no other motivation; especially when it comes to Gujarat and Narendra Modi. Most people have no idea the sacrifices these panellists make and the suffering they go through for you. Yes, they run into Arnab Goswami frequently and that takes a lot of courage and sacrifice. So let’s not be under any impression that a panellist’s life is easy. They also run the risk of their agenda being exposed if their opinions and utterances turn out wrong and their targets are not met.

Take Shabnam Hashmi, for instance. Till the other day she claims she was being chased by TimesNow for debates and appearances. They even sent her pick-up cars. Turns out her outfit called ANHAD operates from a premises given to a Planning Commission member (read Pioneer article). Now, that’s not legal and may have consequences. She claims she operates from a “Garage”. Wow! The late Steve Jobs has indeed inspired many, hasn’t he? Shabnam quit all her govt posts after the Gujarat elections and now refuses to appear on TimesNow. That guy Modi may have won the elections but imagine the loss to humanity. We have lost a panellist! You can read Shabnam’s sob-story here.

I sometimes wonder why parents started giving pots and pans to their toddlers. I am no exception. For all the noise and hell they raise, these pots and pans seem to be a sure way of keeping the little ones productively employed. These childhood habits are difficult to let go. So now we have our panellists doing all the work. They create hell and all the noise and they’re lucky. They even get paid for it. Nothing you hear on TV is free. Nothing!

  1. You have raised absolutely important issue of fund sources for these so called NGO' particularly, protecting Muslim interest in the garb of Cvil Rights. I have similar doubts about that Teesta Setlvad and Javed Anand NGO. From where do they get funds to carry out such long political battles and campaigns? I have heard that there are some complaints against Teesta Javed NGO project regarding misuse of FCRA....Is anybody aware about it? If you know about them please expose them.

    1. Details of donations more than Rs 1 crore received is put up at http://mha.nic.in/fcra.htm. Recently, funding for NGOs was made easier by making it compulsory for all companies to spend 2% of their profits towards corporate social responsibilities (CSR). You see socialism works! Never mind that it can be used largely towards breaking up our country and culture. Will not be surprised if funding churches is made mandatory in the near future. Do not know if Mother Theresa deserves sainthood. But Antonia Maino certainly deserves some reward for having done the most for promoting christianity in India. As our PM said, we can turn adversity to prosperity and run rival NGOs with corporate funding. Question is whether we have the guts and conviction to give up a cushy job and enter social work

  3. Ravi, thanks for your write up. Sometimes I wish that AG, Burqa D, Beefeater, Devout Hindu wife, Raj Kamal, Vishnu Sox, Choubeyjee, the Tool, and their flocks, combined, have even one hundredth of your gray matter. But, again they are not loser. They drive BMW, MB and imported cars, eat imported Japanese beef and caviars, drink French wine and smoke Havan cigars. No small feat by any means. After all Bofor money was kept to feed these d$$s and b$$$$$s. Is it not true?

On another point, I can see two Musharrafs in that second photo! Except one has gray hair. Am I right or just hallucinating?

  8. As the article says, there is nothing unethical about being paid to appear for a debate on a particular TV channel. But when you are paid money to maintain a certain line of thought only for the sake of TV debate (when your true ideology may actually be something completely different), then we've got a problem. Does something like that happen? I'd love to see an article on it.

  11. After reading this article I am very confused. Does anyone has any information regarding the following-
    (1) Do the journalists/Editors who appear on panels (and usually support the congress party) charge money from the party. Are the rates fixed according to the number of TV shows they attend or it is fixed rate for one evening? or these journalists/editors really support the congress party and appear on TV panels after full day's work on their own.
(2)For those who charge money, what is the band (upper limit-lower limit) of their fees?
(3)Do these professional panelists also market themselves for eg. everyday they call all the channels and offer their services?
(4)For the TV anchors who conduct 'fixed' debates, is it due to the pressure from their employers or they too are directly in touch with the political parties?

  13. Here is the information about Teesta Javed communalism Combat project under the name Sabrang Communications. Javed has accepted that he is funded by Congress Party, Communist party Marxist to the tune of 15 Million (1.5 Crores).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communalism_Combat

    Funding

In a 1999 interview, Javed Anand said that before the 1999 Lok Sabha elections Communalism Combat requested and received funds from the Congress Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India and ten individuals to run advertisements attacking the Sangh Parivar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The total budget for this campaign was 15 million rupees, and eighteen ads appeared in 16-18 publications in English, Hindi and other Indian regional languages across India. Some other papers, such as Meerut-e-Samachari and The Asian Age, saw the ads and reprinted them at no cost. One of the ads, attacking the Sangh Parivar's attitude towards women, was endorsed by thirteen NGOs. They received notices from the government pointing out that it was illegal for NGOs that received foreign funding to intervene in politics.

According to Javed Anand, as of 2003 the Air Freight company had supported Communalism Combat for 10 years by buying advertising space in the magazine. The only other advertiser was the Madhya Pradesh government. The Tatas had regularly advertised in the newspaper, but had stopped when the BJP government came into power. The newspaper had been accused of illegally accepting funding from abroad, but this was not substantiated.

    1. Whats new in this? And this isnt complete anyway. There was a whole industry out there - Biju Mathew ( of course a communist , the last thing you need to be called is a missionary supporter) and his great friends have lobbied to prevent corporate funding to Parivar affiliated NGO's. You see its not just Teesta, the Jesus industry is also marxist - its only the nasty intolernat 'Hindu's thats a problem.

And, if you are serious about saving your faith, culture and way of life, you will act :)

We are a country of the morons, for the morons and ruled by the (lesser) morons.

Sri Aurobindo said about a century back that we Indians have lost the ability to think. More true now.

Plus, with the ongoing debacle in the aftermath of the LoC incident, it seems we have only water flowing through our veins.

  18. Before raising war cry on net it is better to have a look at facts. In one the programs called "we the people", Admiral Ramdas (retd) of Indian navy, said " Beheading of Troops has been going on from both sides has been for some time, I mean there is evidence of this…”

Therefore, stop this cycle of violence and hate.

  19. Praveen,

This was telecast on NDTV hosted by "close friend" of ravinar. You can check the NDTV website and download. The blogger who looks for every opportunity to go after Barkha has ignored this. Why? Infact, when the Admiral mentioned this, she quickly cut him short and went to other panelists. Why is she of all shying away from facts? Because she is part of the establishment which knows beheading and other such mutilation is done by both armies. It is an inconvenient truth which needs to be hidden.

    1. Hi Nisha,

Despite the lack of credibility of NDTV , i agree that they are part of establishment and would sell anything doled out by Government. But i am shocked at the suggestion that Indian Army does the same barbaric act like beheading on Pakistani Jawans. Let me search internet. Thing is, where will we get credible information on such incidents ? Considering the propaganda planted in MSM and internet, its not possible for ordinary people.

And, by the way, if they are doing this to the likes of Hafeez Sayeed - i am not complaining. Bad Karma. But i am content with that if its prevents our cities from getting blown off.

Regarding why Ravinar skipped that part - hope he will reply.

    2. Praveen,

This has been widely reported by the print media on numerous occasions. You can read the book by Harinder Baweja, who covered the Kargil war and has written a book on it called "A Soldiers Diary". She recounts how soldiers from both sided used to behead the other and the head was used as a trophy to motivate. Now before you say it was war and 13 years ago, Shishir gupta of HT had written some two years back about 20 Kumaron regiment and Maratha ligh infantry had been beheading pakisan soldiers. He has also mentioned beheading of Indian soldiers in his article. So, the point is as I mentioned earlier, this kind of acts has been done by both armies. It is not something new. Moreover, why is the government refusing UN investigation? That is ample proof that Indian army has also carried out such acts in the past.

    3. Dear Nisha,

If what you is is correct, & if Indian Govt knows this, then I must admit it only means UPA Govt has made their MSM chamchas to bring this story deliberately to divert attention from Corruption, Rapes, Gujarat defeat. What do you say ????

    4. Troll attack! Nisha(latest troll) if you believe Burkha Begam so much,on the same program Gen.Malik denied this so called beheading of Paki soldiers. It seems that only our "track two" guys are aware of it.One can see that Pakis have never complained about it.And this Ramdas has vested interest as he is the leading figure of this "track two" whatever. You see this "track two" is a very lucrative business.

  20. Indian soldiers beheading Pakistanis?? I don't remember if Pakistan ever raised this issue and it is not raising it even now, where it could have been a convenient propaganda tool for them.As far as 'gyan' being circulated through the journalists from Tehelka/Hindustan Times, its better to laugh it off because we all know Tehelka/HT/NDTV etc.. Till such information comes from some reliable source, it should be considered as a propaganda.

    1. They didnt raise since its going on for ages now. Both armies indulge in such practises which is news to you now since the electronic media has come up with it. People who are in reporting know this for a long time. Just because you were not aware doesnt mean it didnt exist. This information has not come from NDTV, it was said by Admiral Ramdas on a program on NDTV and ironical he was cut short by the host when he revealed this proves NDTV doesnt want this information to be made public as it doesnt suit their purpose.

    2. Given a choice, I would rather believe Gen.Malik than the Admiral. The reason is simple- the General knows ins and outs of the Kashmir border with Pakistan, he has spent long years on the Kashmir border taking on Pakis. He was the General during Kargil war and he has seen it all.

Since 1971, ie. over 41 years, Indo-Pak navy have never had an eye to eye contact.Since there is no naval command in the north so the navy/(admirals etc.) has no presence on the Kashmir border. This admiral as it is had retired 20 years ago. His point thus seems to be based on the hearsay or imagination.

    Please look at this

Imagine if this is in Gujarat. Just imagine. Our PAID media would be going with guns and 1000 cameras to chase him and make stories on Modi. Now they will all go silent.

During the raids, the authorities found US Treasury Bonds worth $5 billion (Rs 28,000 crore), which later changed to $5 billion worth International Bills of Exchange (five in number). Ramalingam claimed he purchased the bills with gold bonds from a person based in Brazil, and was raising funds for his petroleum refinery. Possessing such huge bills of exchange without disclosure to income tax authorities is illegal.

After initially asking the Reserve Bank of India and State Bank of India to investigate the bonds, it was announced on January 11 that the documents were being flown to the United States for physical verification. The cognoscenti sniggered it was the beginning of a cover-up.

The raid at Ramalingam’s premises also yielded fixed deposits worth Rs 1.83 crore in the names of Ramalingam and his son with the State Bank of India and Karur Vysya Bank. An income tax official said Ramalingam had received Rs 2.5 crore from a Singapore company by promising it a loan from a financial institution. He used the funds to buy a new car, repair his house and deposited the balance.

The Ramalingam case seems destined to go the way of the investigations into Hasan Ali Khan, the Pune stud farm owner who shot to fame in 2007 with an account with UBS, Zurich, with $8 billion in deposits. The account has since reputedly been emptied; what else? Un-embarrassed, the Union Finance Ministry quietly informed Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance last month that it was simply ‘not possible’ to recover tax arrears of about Rs 91,000 crore from Hasan Ali Khan.
