Media Loves Criminals, Makes Crime Attractive

It was called the ‘trial of the century’. In 1995 O.J. Simpson, the American football and movie star was being tried for the murder of his wife Nicole and her friend. Most people were convinced he was the killer.

In a very dramatic court-scene OJ was also asked to try out a glove from the murder scene. His lawyer famously said "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit”.  The glove didn’t fit. OJ was acquitted for various reasons and it was considered a trial that was badly screwed up by the prosecution. So where is OJ now? Well, he was arrested in 2007 on other charges and in 2008 was sentenced to 33 years in prison. OJ was a celebrity who fell from dizzying heights to a cold prison cell. Some people aren’t that lucky, are they? The law catches up with them one way or another. One can call it divine retribution. But hey, cheer up! It’s not so bad in India. Our OJ’s are above and beyond the law. Not just that, the media loves celebrities who break laws, who are convicted. They are honoured by the media and even by the govt. For two weeks, during the anti-rape protests, our MSM raged against criminals, politicians, criminal behaviour and our laws but they aren’t willing to stand up to or lose one single rupee when it comes to promoting criminals.

Following the Gangrape in Delhi on December 16, 2012 people were out on the streets protesting. Not just in Delhi but across India. Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit gave some ‘tear-jerking’ interviews on NDTV and CNN-IBN on December 21. Hmm… but what was she doing a day earlier? She was busy renaming a road in Vasant Vihar after MAK Pataudi. Vasant Vihar in Delhi is just around 3Kms from Munirka where the woman was raped and assaulted. Who is MAK? He is Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, former Cricket captain and a great player. Just one thing; MAK was arrested for poaching animals and was locked up for 2 days in 2005. He was granted bail but the case never concluded because he died in September 2011. So even if there’s a blot against your name you will be honoured. If you’re a celeb. BCCI also wanted to name the India-England Test series after him. He’s a celebrity, offences can be ignored. Right? Now that the protests have died down most protesters will find time to watch ‘Dabbang2’. Why not! After all for 2 weeks the media couldn’t promote the movie properly. Gotta make up! We have a history of worshipping criminals and then lament the law. And the media doesn’t care; they just love celebrity convicts who are out on bail.

Dabbang? Oh yeah, some pathetic lowlife at The Hindu, the paper that generally rants against Hindu icons finds Swami Vivekananda’s ‘pose’ too masculine (Taking the aggression out ofmasculinity). But who’s the guy who revels in being topless, bare-chested in movies and likes to strike masculine poses in undergarment ads? That’s Salman Khan (SK) for you; a convict, under-trial and out on bail. Now SK is reputed for many “masculine” escapades, including assaulting co-stars or journalists. In a drunk-driving case he killed one and injured a few more. He has been convicted for killing Black Bucks revered by the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan. But would The Hindu complain about underwear ads of SK? I suppose money is “masculine”, isn’t it?

All news channels are guilty of promoting the likes of SK as a great social-service guy. It seems he even weeps for stray dogs that die. Nice! And then the media outrages over who inspires criminals and rapists, that there should be more stringent laws. They want Bollywood to reconsider “item numbers” but all this, while they promote “bad boys” every single day. Coca Cola pulled SK out of their ads after the drunk-driving incident but seems he’s back doing ads for them. CNN-IBN had him as the chief guest (as most other news channels do on many occasions) handing out awards to “Super Idols”. To distract from the rape case and other crimes they then blame lyrics of Honey Singh. Who sponsors Salman Khan and why ads featuring him are carried by media? The media itself is guilty of the same crime they accuse Honey Singh of. He writes lyrics or sings but the media rewards criminals. Mind you, it’s not as if these guys have served their sentences and paid their dues to society.

SK is not the only one. There is the other guy, Sanjay Dutt. He too is a convict, a political party’s member and he floats on media channels like he’s the great “Gandhi” after his Munna-movies. Surprisingly, his case seems to take eons to come up for hearing in the Supreme Court. The offence was in 1993. Do the media scream over a 20 year long justice period for him? Oh no! You see, like SK, Dutt sells stuff for them too. Why would you want your salesmen in trouble, huh? One of the reasons film-producers offered to justify bail for these Bollywood criminals is that a lot of money was invested in their movies. Heard anything more absurd?

The funniest part is that these celebs are hard to find when they have to be served with summons or when there’s an arrest warrant against them. Midday reports SK was exempted from court appearances 83 times in 10 years in the drunk-driving case. And when the latest summon was to be served he couldn’t be found. The crystal ball showed he was partying with the Special IG of Police. They could have even asked Rajdeep Sardesai (yes, Rajdeep who once thought Dawood Ibrahim was a patriot) or anyone at NDTV, ABPNews, Timesnow or any channel. Arnab Goswami even did a ‘Frankly Speaking’ interview with him. If SK shows the way can others be far behind? Ha! Bitty Mohanty, son of a top cop (Relax, it’s not in Caps, I am not referring to THAT Top Cop) is absconding for 7 years after jumping parole in a rape case. Gopal Kanda, former Minister of Haryana, was absconding for almost a month when there was an arrest warrant in the Geetika suicide case. He did have a genuine explanation though: he was preparing his reply to the charges in peace in some corner of the country. Durai Dayanidhi, son of MP Azhagiri, was absconding for months with a non-bailable warrant on him. He surfaced only when bail was finally granted. Oh by the wayward, media feels like a coy “dulhan” when they have to report the land-cases of Shekhar Gupta or N. Ram of The Hindu. Hammam Ahoy! The list is endless.

Someone said “Drunken Lumpens”? Umm… how does the news-media explain all the surrogate liquor ads? BlendersPride fashion! “Make it large” Royal Stag! “Chaar yaar” type Bagpiper! Oh there’s music to drink by from Smirnoff or Bacardi. Keep counting. No moral sermons or outrages for the ridiculous promotion of liquor by circumventing the law. And the media celebs are gonna tell you how to deal with rape? People supposedly in journalism who have made every possible compromise with morals, truth and dignity simply do not qualify to sermonise or outrage over laws or failure of law. If someone has to wake up first, it’s the media. The Hindi news media can’t even get past their “Saas-Bahu” and “BigBoss” specials. Who are these people fooling? These are channels whose websites goof up and change headlines thrice a day like Shivraj Patil changes clothes. People keep screen-shots for their mischief.

Let the media apex bodies like PCI or NBSA pass resolutions that they will not harbour or promote any Bollywood or any other celeb with criminal charges against them. Let them resolve they will not promote movies of convicted criminals. Let them report the court cases against their own media members. In the absence of this, the news-media itself is nothing more than an accomplice, a mafia wife.

  1. You hit the nail on head....you can just see the list of people you mentioned in your article. Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutta, Durai Dayananidhi, Gopal Kanda, Shekhar Gupta and N. Ram all are the torch bearer of Indian Secularism. So they are darlings of media and Page 3 celebrities who preach us on these news channels on News Hour, Frankly speaking, We the people, Big Fights and what not.....

OJ Simpson is in jail for 33 years after escaping in 1995. But our courts are yet to decide on Sanjay Dutta and Salman Khan after 5 to 20 years. Remember Sanjay Dutta is accused in 1992 case. I have serious doubt that both of them will escape the law like MAK Pataudi.

Our Courts deny the justice for even 50 years. Our courts do not wish to change, and the Congress has vested interest in keeping the Court System rotten. I heard that moron Abhishek Manu Singhvi on channels saying that we are just spending 1% or less on our Justice system since last 65 years. Who stopped them increasing it to 2 to 5% . They are in power most of the time in those 65 years. They have lacks of carodes of Rupees to splurge on meaningless subsidies and schemes in the name of poor to buy votes, but they do not have money to strengthen our justice system which will definitely help poor getting the justice. Ultimately how much money will we require to strengthen our justice system? Equal to outlay of NAREGA and MNEREGA? or for that matter meaningless Food Security Bill ?

No!! Congress will not do this because that will not bring votes to in immediate future. Our Media morons will not ask sharp questions on these issues.

I have a proposal....let us fight 2014 election on Judicial Reforms. Who ever promises that, will get my vote. Let it be single point agenda.

If we can not implement the law what is the use of having parliament making the laws.

    2. Completely agree. But who will bell the cat? Of the eligible voters, less than 60% vote. And 1/3 of the polled votes are sufficient to get elected. i.e. only 20% of the eligible voters decide the Govt. of the day. So just cater to this 20% in any which way.

  2. The latest: Dawoodbhai's close buddy and relative miandad is coming to india to watch cricket. talk about sensitivities! A man whose in-law is an enemy of India; a cricketer who defamed the game by match-fixing http://static.cricinfo.com/db/NATIONAL/PAK/NEWS/qayyumreport/qayyum_report.html

Something is very wrong with our government since a very long time. The waitress, the corrupt foreign minister, the BCCI boss and agriculture minister of india all of them along with a majority of the media which is supplicant in nature are seriously into money laundering - that seems to be the only logic that can explain our nation's decay.

The delhi gangrape protests showed that our socuety is sick of misgovernance and desires a change-the insulted sheep are waking up! Time to do away with the sham of 'all politics is local' and vote for a genuine change in 2014; demolish the wolves before they devour you.

  3. Arnab appears holier than in Newshour. in one of the panel discussion during those dilli protest days, he asked a Shivsena man to break up alliance with NDA because one leader in Haryana had spoken which was not liked by Arnab. when Arnab was asked not to call tainted people for debate, he did not have answer. Arnab will ask every one why they did not come to help of law. but he will not answer why he did not reveal hideout of Salman when police reporting him untraceble. he will cite journalistic freedom. Arnab is comfortable with Abhishek Manu Shinghvi and never misses to mention him as Dr Shingvi. Arnab says Mamta should respond for one of the thousands of shows in Poshchim Bengal but never dares to ask same from Sonia even in case of Kanda. Arnab is representative of the best lot available in TV media. other don't even worth mention.

  4. Whenever some big shot intones, "The law will take its course", it means the prosecution of the case is going to be f***ed up. And when the accused says,"I have full faith in our courts/judiciary", he means exactly that. He has full faith the case will linger on till the cows come home.

  5. Surprised. Expected a post on "In a setback to Gujarat Chief Minister, the Supreme Court has upheld the appointment of Justice Mehta as Gujarat Lokayuta." Of course, the court judgement is in no way critical of Modi is another matter. At the least I expected a post on TOI Social Impact awards. However, your post is very valid. Justice in India is never time bound. Shame that the undermining of judiciary has never been questioned effectively. In a banana republic like India, taking law in one's own hands is the only way for justice.

  6. Dear Ravinar, you have raised a very valid and important point. Our MSM does uphold celebrity criminals like Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt and many more.
On the flip side, we Indians also watch their movies, even when we know that they are convicted by the courts.
So first we should boycott their movies, then these criminal actors will loose their sheen and then probably media might hesitate to parade them on their channels.
Incidently on 2/3 occasions, Shahrukh Khan was detained at US airports and our Govt has rescused him. Obviously US Govt suspects his links with few Pakistani suspicious people. We in India will not come to know the truth. But it makes sense to boycott his movis as well.

One old idiot lawyer is telling that constitution gave gave equal rights to women. Really? Then why the hell you demand protection? If you are equal to men fight them. He replied - Well if that's the case, how come he is not in jail? Did anyone stop the jury to convict him or the police to take correct action? Since he is out and in open, surely somewhere the news is wrong. And he is also running a charity "Being Human" and helping so many people, why only speak of the wrongs?
Sadly, that's the attitude of millions of his fans. From what he said, I can vouce that if police and courts did their part of job well, things would have been different. Fro my part, I stopped watching his movies after that chinkara caase itself.

    http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2013-01-03/coimbatore/36130238_1_treasury-bonds-bond-receipts-tirupur

I-T sleuths here said the bonds were seized in a raid on December 31 at the residence of T M Ramalingam on Dharapuram-Palani Road near Upputhurai, about 80 kms from Coimbatore, in Tirupur district. The bonds are worth $5 billion. The investigating officers have also seized other financial documents from him including Rs 1.5 crore in fixed deposit receipts from banks in Tirupur district.

When a TOI correspondent visited Ramalingam's house, it turned out to be a modest building, with an SUV parked outside. Ramalingam confirmed to TOI that sleuths had raided his place. "I admit that they took away financial documents, mostly international bills of exchange worth $5 billion. They also checked my bank locker and sealed them," Ramalingam said. As per Indian laws, a resident Indian can invest up to $200,000 in a financial year to buy foreign currency assets.

Ramalingam told officials that he received the bonds from a friend in Brazil.

  22. Excellent article Ravi. Just one point that you failed to emphasize:

For the past few years the mainstream media has been successfully propagandizing this absolute myth that famous celebrities often become the "victims" of their own fame and get "unjustly" targeted for small misdemeanours. Such excuses and defenses are often peddled by the media to cover up and pull a blanket over small or big crimes committed by these "bad boy" criminal celebrities -- such as last year when a drunk Shahrukh Khan (and his goons) abused and physically assaulted a poor security guard at Wankhede, or when Salman Khan openly sided with the Pakistani position on the 26/11 terrorist massacres in Mumbai, etc.

But the truth is entirely opposite to the media's propaganda -- these "bad boy" criminal celebrities in fact get away easily (summons or arrest warrants are kept pending for decades, the police purposefully botches up the investigation, witnesses are intimated or bought out, etc), whereas a common man ends up getting arrested and harassed for years for as little as just standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Just imagine, if I, a common man of India, had abused or assaulted a guard while being drunk, or illegally poached an endangered species, or physically assaulted my actress-girlfriend, or abused her on phone and forced her to go to Dubai to do a "show" to please the underworld dons, or killed a few homeless people sleeping on the footpaths while driving drunk, or helped terrorists to stash their AK-47s and RDX in my farmhouse, or essentially waged a war against the State in collusion with the underworld mafia and the Pakistani ISI, etc, would I still be at large? Would I get invited as chief guest to functions hosted by CNN-IBN and Rajdeep Sardesai? Would NDTV's cub reporters fawn and gush at me, and sing my praises? But Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt have done precisely all these crimes mentioned above, and yet all of them are perpetually the media's darlings. Even more shameful is that they continue to remain the country's youth's darlings as well.

  23. Excellent Post,Mr. Ravi…….as always

As an observer of Indian Politics and as a Kashmiri refugee, I have always been saying(wherever I get a chance)that the threat to Indian State comes more from the Abdhullas and the Muftis of the valley rather than...say a Geelani bcoz the Indian state and the people know exactly what Geelani stands for, what his ideology is etc etc. but the Abdhullas and Muftis are more complex and also treacherous. They have their lunch with the Barkhas and Sagarikas of the world and their dinner with Hizbul and LET. The senior Abhdulla, when once asked about this double speak and alleged covert support to militants replied...tongue in cheek.."Who will care for the Loyalists like me if there are no militants".This statement was at that time just laughed off but it tells us a lot about how the Indian state has been subverted and compromised. I sometimes feel that the "Khans" are to Bollywood what the Abdhullas and Muftis are to Kashmir--devious and full of subterfuge. Even a cursory look at SRK's last few movies gives us a fairly good idea of what he is up to. The underlying message of a Hugely successful "MAIN HUN NA"...a muslim terrorist,Khan,Is humane and eventually gets reformed but a Hindu-Raghvan is inhuman, kills children(Muslim) and becomes a hindrance in Aman Kee Aasha. In “Chak de”,the main protagonist is again a Khan--Poor MR Negi...and "My Name is Khan" was again intended to be a Political statement. Success has made these “Khans” more arrogant and the way they have been flaunting their religious identity lately tells us a lot about where we are heading towards. To add to this mess, The Media- Celebrity nexus has become a heady cocktail as they complement as well as feed off each other. And add to it the Govt. patronage— both Overt and covert—and our goose is cooked. Worse times ahead….perhaps
