Gangrape, Subhash Tomar & Monkey-Fisted Media

Monkeys are usually known to be intelligent creatures. That is, except when they’re hungry or greedy. In the old days they would trap a monkey with a cage containing a banana with a hole large enough for a monkey's hand to fit in, but not large enough for a monkey's fist (clutching the banana) to pull out. These were used to trap and catch monkeys that lack the intellect to let go of the banana. After the Delhi Gang-rape incident, there were monkeys trapped everywhere; some from the GOI, some from the Delhi govt and some from the Delhi Police. Nothing unusual about that, govts and police are often caught in monkey-traps of their own making. The Gang-rape, the protests and the death of Constable Subhash Tomar had everyone trapped. Some from the media were trapped in a different monkey-trap; Twitter and Social Media. They never learn! They never learn that Twitter and Social Media are made up of unforgiving people with REM. That’s Random Excess Memory. The monkey in the pic is probably asking a friend “Oh God, how do I pull out of this one”?

The media always expects people will forget but that doesn’t happen in social media. The monkeys keep making the same mistake. Before the current series of incidents over the Gang-rape we have had quite a few incidents this year. There was the Guwahati molestation case with some channels airing videos without blurring some images. There was the Assam riot and killings when Rajdeep Sardesai fell into the monkey trap of tyranny of distance, of deaths being lower than Gujarat and lack of OB vans. Rajdeep did apologise and, to his credit, both he and his channel have done a lot better in handling the present crises. Following that we had the Azad Maidan protests by secular and civilised people. And yes, we had the exodus of North-East people from Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore. The Bangalore exodus peaked, of all days, on Independence-Day. Fond memories, eh?

During the Bangalore exodus most of us relied on tweets from the ground, from the railway stations. The media, of course, didn’t have a clue what was going on. During that episode the Karnataka Home Minister even rushed to the station to pacify people who were fleeing out of fear unlike the present crisis where ministers were floating on media channels. So in steps our heroine to warn us all idiots. These two tweets from Barkha Dutt are Gyaan from the upper most peaks of the Himalayas. First she says “Think”! Think before you use words and don’t add to rumours. Ahem! You need to be “propah” at all times on your choice of words. Did you learn? In the next one she says “please do not add to the panic and rumours, let’s be assuring, calm and sane”. Did you get it? You see, nobody learns, least of all Barkha. Having dipped her hand in that crisis she went on a tweet-spree that night. She tweeted about Union Ministers calling the Karnataka CM, that there was no exodus, Assamese were going on vacation, that all that was rumour-mongering. Truth is she didn’t really appear to have any facts at all.

Facts? Did someone mention facts? Oops! Only a few people have a monopoly on facts. Don’t they? Barkha believes she is one of them.  She doesn’t allow ‘imagination’ to interfere with her reporting or tweeting, does she? It’s a small matter, though, that her nonsense about “Lumpens among protesters” was demolished and her hypocrisy exposed in my earlier post. But following the discussion of lumpens, the next day there were indeed some lumpen elements deputed to the venue of protests. They managed to ignite violence, damage property and cause injuries. Nobody is in doubt which group these lumpens belonged to and which political party may have engaged them. It is after this round of violence (On December 24) that we heard about a Constable being killed in the violence.

Victory to GOI! Now that there was violence and somebody had been killed, the govt had the moral ground to state that the protests had been hijacked by political elements. Oh! Not just the govt, even NDTV headlined “Student protests hijacked by violence”. Who reported the constable first? Oh yeah! It was Barkha Dutt. She tweeted that a constable (Subhash Tomar) had died as a consequence of the violence. Fact? Fact-checked? Nope! So Barkha deletes that tweet and a while later tweets that the constable was critically injured and taken to hospital. Remember, she is careful in her choice of words; she is avoiding rumours and trying not to create panic and maintain sanity. Just like her Bangalore episode, right? Following her tweet, her channel also picks up her news-feed and keeps shouting “Cop critically injured” by protesters. Truth is: Not one media house or reporter, least of all Barkha, had any shred of evidence that the cop was injured by protesters. This is how the monkey traps itself. And having trapped itself it can’t let go of the banana. Read this post by SudhirKumar on the whole episode and these storified-tweets of media actors by BarbarIndian on the callous and unprofessional reporting by them.

On the morning of December 25, the constable, Subhash Tomar was reported dead around 6.30am. Suddenly, the govt announced a state funeral. Imagine death, post-mortem, organising police groups from protest sites can all be time consuming tasks. But hey, our govt and Delhi police are so hyper efficient they managed it all and by 4pm in the afternoon Subhash Tomar was cremated with full state honours. Believable? They just didn’t imagine someone else will turn up with a story. An eyewitness! Yogendra Tomar (in pic), a journalism student of BR Ambedkar College, who was also involved in protests but returning from a hospital saw Subhash Tomar collapsing. So he and another injured protester (returning from head injury treatment), Paolin, helped the constable and tried to revive him. Two other cops were with them. By evening on Dec.25, after Subhash was cremated, Yogendra was on many TV channels, including NDTV-Hindi, giving his version of events. He confirmed nobody attacked Subhash and he collapsed while running. The lady who was helping, Paolin, confirmed his story. Now take a look at this picture (The video is also available on Youtube):

What do you see? We can see Subhash lying on the ground, two cops and the two eye-witnesses trying to help revive him. The cop’s shoe has been removed. There’s a bystander in the left pic. Clear enough! Now, observe closely. There’s some smoke (probably tear gas) about an estimated 300 metres from this group. That seems to be some conflict in progress. But look around Subhash and the group. Does it look like it was a conflict zone? There are no broken items like bangles, watches or spectacles. There are no visible drops of blood anywhere. No pools of water or plastic water bottles. There are no stones or rocks around the cop. There are no shoes or slippers strewn around like you would find in a conflict zone. No blunt objects (with which the media claims Subhash was attacked with). No tear gas shells. There’s nothing! Even the Youtube video I mentioned above only shows some mild debris strewn around. Some may be regular stuff on the streets that you find and some may be from a minor clash at the most. Paolin also told CNN-IBN that when the shirt of Subhash was opened there were no injuries on his chest but it was full of sweat. Cold sweat?

Therefore the theory that Subhash fell after being attacked seems pretty dubious. And there is no evidence whatsoever anywhere to indicate it. Also, the body movement, the slouching or falling head of Subhash has not been explained anywhere convincingly. However, during the course of the day on December 26, it did not stop Barkha Dutt from her tweet-spree trying to link the death of Subhash Tomar to various unrelated issues, even in Kashmir to cloud the issue. NDTV and other channels continued to maintain he had died due to injuries sustained on the field. The hospital where Subhash was taken does not mention any external injuries. It is quite amazing that in an attack in a conflict with a mob, a person suffering injuries leading to death can completely escape any external injury. But even without the post-mortem report the police spokesman mentioned yesterday morning that Subhash had chest, stomach and neck injuries and then stated he could make comments only after a post-mortem report. All these conflicting reports only indicate either a massive bungling or a massive cover-up. Last evening, not a single caller on Times Now believed the story dished out by the media or the govt.

For someone who sermonises from the Himalayas, Barkha herself started this whole nonsense of speculation over Subhash Tomar. Her channel then continued to tom-tom the story that Subhash died as a consequence of injuries. They neither had any evidence nor any convincing report to rely on. Barkha didn’t have any fact-checking done either when she tweeted the cop was killed (and she claims few people have the guts for facts only). Or was it that he had already died on the streets when she tweeted? Did her reporter tell her that? Barkha, as is her political persuasion, doesn’t fail to point a finger at the Right Wing over the post-mortem report in her series of tweets. And after all her speculation through tweets she states she won’t tweet anymore about Tomar. Haha! Bravo! Is there anything that she had still left ‘untweeted’?

In all of this what one misses to observe is that collectively, NDTV and similar channels have more or less given a clean-chit to Sheila Dikshit and the Congress for events that happened in Delhi and the crimes that have made it a rape-capital. It’s almost as if Sheila Dikshit is an angel who is now a victim who is complaining like everyone else. It should be clear on hindsight that the media monkey that dipped its hand into the cage got stuck with the banana. Their lies and spins stand exposed once again. Only thing left untweeted is “Mission Accomplished”! Someone led them to that trap and you can guess who. In the meantime, with all the noise about Subhash Tomar, that 23-year old Gang-rape victim has been reduced to another comma in the story.

  2. The PC claim that the constable had chest injury. But he was wearing chest protective gear. Then how it happened?. Poor quality of protective gear?. Why the constable was not provide hand shield or helmets. The PC is responsible for not providing proper equipment to the constable. Will he own responsibility and quit?

  3. Great Analysis Ravi. Will truth about death of Const. Tomar ever come out? No the whole medical, Police, Judicial fraternity is in pockets of madam and her Poodles. Will the rape victim will ever get justice? No, all the Fu$$$$g commissions and enquiries are led by judges on payroll of Congress Party. I would suggest that I I'll accept enquiry by three Foreign Judges only. I have lost trust in Judges.

As for Barkha, least is said better it is. After all she heads the lumpen elements of MSM. Sometimes the passions can take wrong turn, when the people accept lower values for personal pleasures! Probably she is a born sadist!

  4. How can they conduct a funeral so fast to a guy whose cause of death is disputed. Atrocious behaviour. In Tamilnadu news channels they are repeating that the constable was died because of the injuries happened during the protest.

  5. Is the eyewitness Yogendra Tomar or Yogendra Yadav? A fleeting glimpse at a TV channel - i don't know (or care) which one - was saying his name was Yadav. Just a small point of course. Doesn't change the meat of the article. Even the Indian Express yesterday was screaming about the death of the "injured" constable. Saale media aur govt waale mritt constable ki chitaa sek kar apni thhand door kar rahe hain.

  12. How many of the policemen who died during the Mumbai attacks received state funeral? How many of them received one day's salary from their peers? Unfortunately this cheap attempt to deviate from the core issue i.e., lack of solution to the ever increasing frequency of rapes, fell just as flat as our PM's theek hain speech

  14. Why is she getting targeted? Is it because along with all other issues she raises issue like Kashmir also? It is so easy to write one such article burning mid night lamp and post in the wee hour of morning than to do unbiased journalism. Grow up man, don't play with the emotion of our people who is already thin skinned with emotional waves taking the form of Tsunami at this hour of crisis.

    1. Some of us find manipulation of public opinion through outright lies, half truths, twisted news and unprincipled journalism unpalatable. Today, the president's son finds the attire and make up of women objectionable, the PM in a speech terms unemployed poor as the root cause for crimes (maybe he is a strong supporter of Bal Thackeray), the apcc chief feels that the rape in Delhi is a minor incident. Many of us are fed up with the congress for this and many other failures. 'She' is getting targeted for her support of the congress and for reasons mentioned above. If you like her reporting, none of us are criticizing you.

    2. If you are criticizing congress, it's lack of governance and their MPs are coming up with rubbish, everyone will join hand in hand with you. But if you are talking about proximity of Barkha with congress, I don't agree. She criticize congress, she criticize congress governance but along with that she also criticize BJP governing states as well as highlight human right issues.

Yes we have the immature media and if you want to talk about the Indian media then talk in totality and don't target any individual journalist.

Just have a look at Kargil, 2002 riot, taj shootings and it will give you an input to why people loathe her. The media today is clearly a case of report what keeps them in power. And the writer here has clearly pointed this out.

    1. And here you see the lotus is popping out of someone's mouth. If Barkha is a biased journalist then so is Arnab, Rahul, Rajdeep and so on even if your forget hindi journalists. And if you are a fair critic criticize the whole media rather than highlighting one individual. At least she has the guts to dig in the grave and try to uncover bigger issues related to human right.

      Delete
    2. @Amir Mahmood,

As the worst journalist in the country, Barkha Dutt will naturally get a higher share of lampooning. Secondly, Kashmir issue is in the context of Subhash Tomar's death which had no connection. Are you defending that? Thirdly, it appears this is the first article you are reading here. I have called Barkha, Arnab, Rajdeep the lowest BAR in journalism. There are at least 400 posts before this. Just click on any of those. And even if those posts had not targeted the whole media, what exactly is your problem if Barkha is criticised? That itself is no reason for you to grieve. Question the contents of the post rather than bringing in bleeding-heart defences. I might criticise her for the next 384 articles too. It depends on who screws up more.

      Delete
    3. Yes this is the first article I have read of yours. You have all the rights to write next 420 article against her and no one can stop you if you are already intended to do so. And it's you who have brought Kashmir along with Tomar's death in the very first place. Here the issue is not only related to Tomar's death rather bigger issue is the on going rape culture in the country. And when we talk about rape we should talk about it happening everywhere be it Delhi, Manipur or Kashmir. No Hierarchy of rape and sorrow please.

      Delete
    4. @Amir Mahmood

Dont comment out of ignorance. The Kashmir reference was made by Barkha in her tweets on the post-mortem report of Subhash Tomar. The post implies it and I thought my response to you already clarified that. Maybe you didnt get it. So do go and read her tweets from yesterday and you will find it. Now its for you to explain what connection Kashmir has to Subhash Tomar.

      Delete
    5. @Amir Mahmood

As for rapes happening elsewhere that is not the context here. The whole issue is about fake tweets on Subhash Tomar's death and the history of hypocritical tweets of Barkha. If you are confusing this post to be an article on rapes then you are reading it incorrectly.

      Delete
    6. In this case you may call her frantic but not hypocrite. She updated as and when truth uncovered. And there are dotted points from Tomar's death to Kashmir where she wanted draw the line in her tweets. Here is a cop who has died in the protest and we want wanted to believe in one side of the story which is of protester and completely disowning the police, on the other hand women in Kashmir getting harassed and even raped by cops again we want to believe in one side of the story. But this time story of Cops and not of victim and protester there. Can we do some balancing act? This what I believe her intention was behind that tweet.

      Delete
    7. She updated? First, she has no business to constantly tweet rubbish without proper confirmation of facts. She claims to deal only in facts. Which has been established to be a falsehood. There are dotted points from Tomar that lead to Kashmir? Why stop there? You could have gone all the way to Tahrir square as Barkha does.

You can call her frantic if you choose. Nobody would have a problem with that. What I have put up points clearly to her being a chronic hypocrite. She is indeed a hypocrite and I have established this with not one but many incidents and episodes on her conduct and journalism.

      Delete
    8. If you have freedom to write 420 articles of 110 pages against her, then she too has right to say something in 140 letters. Freedom of speech not only reserved for you sir. And Tomar case is still a subject of investigation, you can't jump to a conclusion without having a final words from investigating agency.

Yes there is a visible line from "Tomar's death" to "Kunan Poshpora incident" which you don't actually want to see. I thought you are a fine critic but one criticism out of dozen of praise and you fled to Tahrir square. Have some heart and courage to accept some criticism also.

Barkha can write what she wants in 140 or 1000.. As a public figure muddying the journalistic discours.. it will be questioned. Get used to it. Nobody has stopped anyone from saying what they want.

Dont resort to childish remarks about tolerating criticism. You are yet to come up with one single question about the contents of the post. If Tomar is still a subject of investigation that was the reason Barkha should have avoided her stupid comments and judgements.

    10. Dear Ravinar,

Good Rebuttal. I would like to add here that the Problem of Kashmir is as much an Indian problem as the Delhi rape case. Unfortunately the muslim extremists in Kashmir do wake up only when human rights violations occur in Kashmir for furthering their seperatist agenda. Burkha Dutt fits well in this Kashmir web of hypocricy.

      Delete
    11. You are smartly avoiding the points were made. A trait of critic or a journalist, what should I consider? If my remarks were childish then look at your's immediate previous comment also and I know where it is coming from.

If you know where "Im coming from" you should also know why I respond to you. Its because I do know where "you and your comments are coming from". If all I wanted to do is "avoid" you, it would have been easier to "block" you. That's something Barkha does regularly, not this blog. Even if some rioters belong to political parties, what is wrong with it? Dont they have right to protest?
The media is overenthusiastic and wants to come to conclusion hastily. Remember the reporting during mumbai seize?
the government is in between deep blue sea and the devil. If the rape victim dies, it will be a black mark. If she lives on, it will do damage as a living witness and victim who cant be stopped talking or seeking justice.

    1. Many reasons. Strong anti-Hindu feelings, Congress supports this as it used to win votes (but no longer, I feel). Second, hunger for power. Quote from Wiki - The Deccan Chronicle commented, "The ‘Radia tapes’ may have torn the veil off the nexus between information hungry journalists, lobbyists and industrialists, and opened everyone’s eyes to what has long been suspected - the ability of a small but powerful group to use their connections to influence policy." The Times of India commented "The people are showing who the boss is. The weapon in their hands is the internet, ... has seen frantic activism against "power brokering" by journalists in collusion with corporate groups and top government politicians..." Government in turn rewards the media with advertisements. Maybe Ravi should write an article on "What is wrong with Burkha"

Do not carry any advertisement in your newspapers and on your television channels that portrays women in bad light and as a commodity. We all know there are many of them. Force your clients to come up with cleaner and better ads.

The million-rupee question is, will you take a hit on your revenues for a social movement you claim to be spearheading? :)
