CNN-IBN: Twist & Shout

When the previous post ‘Robert Vadra & the innocence of journalists’ was pointed by someone on Twitter to Rajdeep Sardesai he, at his wits end, was naturally rattled. Instead of responding to the tweet Rajdeep sends the person a DM with a message about Media Crooks: “Now he is what is Paid Media. Paid to abuse media”. That is nice! Now all I have to do is to wait for Rajdeep to send me my cheque so his dry dream comes true. I have only one objection though. I have rarely used the term ‘Paid media’ and that too mostly in quoting someone or in the context of some report. I find the term is not as respectful as MediaCrooks which I coined to honour some of our media celebs. Oh there’s the “abuse” part too. Isn’t that the cover these folks use in defence when they have nothing to say? His deputy editor has even complained of being abused because she’s a “woman” after the Sri Sri episode. I wonder what Rajdeep’s excuse is. Abused because he’s a “man”? Haha! Anyway, the laughter challenge bit is over. Let’s get into some more of CNN-IBN’s “Twist” and “Shout”. Yep, twist headlines, questions and shout misleading information, even LIES.

What does one understand by the term “accused”? In casual conversation it can substitute allegations, finger-pointing and so on. But is the news business casual conversation? People in the news business would be careful about terms they use. ‘Accused’ is normally used when a person or entity is legally charged with an offence and is likely to be prosecuted. Umm ... not so when it comes to CNN-IBN! You see they have the license to concoct headlines the way they would like to see the story.

Given that the Robert Vadra (RV) financial allegations have had the media running for cover in defence they seem bent on somehow balancing the damage by desperately tarring someone from the Opposition. Narendra Modi would have been handy but they are still searching for some real muck on him. So they have to make do with Nitin Gadkari, the BJP president. On the night of October 6 the CNN-IBN kept scrolling a headline: “Gadkari is an accused in the Goshikurd irrigation project”. Really? This is, of course, in connection with the Maharashtra irrigation scam which has been in the news. Gadkari seems to be trigger-happy when it comes to issuing legal notices for defamation. I guess CNN-IBN just gave him one more reason. So Rajdeep and his channel have the license to concoct and twist headlines, abuse media power with even lies, and taint people and then cry “abuse” when challenged and exposed.

The twists of CNN-IBN didn’t start there for that night. It actually started some hours prior with the Karan Thapar (KT) - Arvind Kejriwal (AK) interview over the latter’s allegations against RV. Now, we are not going to deal with AK’s answers to Thapar’s questions or statements. We will dwell merely on some of what Thapar asked or said. The only thing that was disingenuous by AK was that he claimed never to have read or heard about the ET report on RV till the previous evening. Surely, AK didn’t wake up with a dream one night that said “go after RV”. There has been enough in the print and online media that would have motivated AK and team to go after RV. Even if AK didn’t actually read ET as he claims, one can be sure there are enough watchdogs in his team to educate him on the news.

So let’s read some of the questions and statements of Thapar. I must mention that these are transcriptions and though I may have missed a word or two here and there, the essence of what he said has been kept intact. (All questions/statements from the interview are in blue):

KT: Was it politically motivated or morally improper? Huh? How do you answer this question? Pick either option and you’re screwed. Nice try. On the other hand since AK is now a politician where is the need to seek a political motivation?

KT: He (RV) is not a ruler, he’s an ordinary citizen, you have libelled him without giving him a chance to explain. Really? I have little doubt that every citizen in India would like to be as “ordinary” as RV. Any idiot can tell you that Vadra would be less than ordinary selling some handicrafts in Moradabad if not for his relationship with the Gandhi family. Now then, if RV is indeed so ordinary why is he entitled to exemption from security checks and screening at airports? I guess the wiseguys at CNN-IBN don’t rehearse the questions before they ask. This is a question many people are asking. Who knows what RV is taking out or bringing in through all the airports in this country. Also, do the media usually stand up so much for “ordinary” citizens? Amazing!

KT: If a newspaper or channel had done what you have done it would be accused of biased journalism. Will they? But then CNN-IBN and KT batting so much for RV doesn’t seem to them to be bias at all. The twisted headline indicting Gadkari doesn’t seem to be a bias at all. Is it?

KT: You encashed the fact that he is Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law. You are using RV to target Sonia Gandhi. To this I don’t even have to offer any comment. AK’s reply was stinging enough as he sarcastically asked: “Am I encashing … or is he (RV) encashing this fact?” That’s right! Between AK and RV who does the public think is encashing his position? AK may be politically encashing the hit but in the case of RV the term “encashing” could even be taken literally given the financial allegations.

KT: He (RV) became a pawn in your political ambition. Haha! I do have the choicest description of pawns in the media and have written about it elsewhere. But hey, does anyone remember who was called a “Tool” by presidential candidate P.A. Sangma? So any allegation going against the Congress political capital is either using a “pawn” or is being a “tool”. The shameless Thapar even called Sangma a “tool”. So what nonsense is he talking here? Twisting it like his channel’s agenda?

KT: You are being deliberately anti-Congress, you have a bias against Congress. So you see, this is really what hurts KT that the allegations are against Congress. Now, if RV is an ordinary, private citizen how do the allegations amount to a bias against Congress? But that’s what bothers KT and CNN-IBN. It’s hurting their own favourite political party. Elsewhere, KT even asks why AK is not targeting BJP leaders. All this after the allegations being aired against Gadkari by TeamArvind and even the fake headline of “Gadkari accused” being scrolled by the channel. Another shameful performance by both KT and CNN-IBN.

The rest of the interview went along the same lines. In a 20 minute interview, KT spoke for 11 minutes and AK had 9 minutes. When the host talks more than the guest you are assured that the purpose is not to know or educate but to defend the Congress. CNN-IBN and KT are getting to be good at it.

After being recently slapped by Mamata Banerjee with “you people don’t have guts” to ask Sonia Gandhi, then Subramanian Swamy again slapping Rajdeep with “innocence of journalists” AK too joined the party. He slapped KT with: “If you have guts, call him (RV) on this program and ask him for an explanation, you don’t have the courage..”. I wonder how many slaps it will take Rajdeep to understand twisting and shouting untruths and abuse of media power doesn’t sell anymore.

  1. Indeed the Tool got handful from Kejriwal in his "Devil's Advocate" yesterday. Ravi, I remember sometime back in your initial blogs you mentioned that Rajdeep has some conscience left. I had commented back then that he is equally co-opted if not more than the Diva. Now it seems there is a rat-race between them and likes of the Tool, Padgaonkar, Ketkar, Smirk Sharma, Trader Gupta etc who is more loyal to the Family. I find no TV channel immune to this syndrome. The rot is far deeper than imagined before.

    1. All said , Kejriwal is a genius. He played the Gadkari part first, so that NDTV and CNN-IBN went gaga and THEN exposed Vadra. They didnt have a chance to bury the news. Wasnt it the play?

  2. There is something fundamentally wrong with our system that does not have stringent policy for monitoring media becoming stooge to politicians. As for Rajdeep , he is steeped in morbid arrogance and considers Aam Aadami as less mortals for questioning his ethics or should i say rather lack of it. retribution is not for behind. Jai Hind

  4. These tools have skin like rhinos ..nothing affects them.Who will cut the hand tht feeds them..doodh dene wali gaay ki laat kha kha ke besharm ho gaye hain..For these msm there is Hindi saying"chullu bhar paani mein doob maro"...but since they believe in outdated gandhigiri..they offer another cheek after a slap so no amount of slaps will deviate them from their agenda of being loyal to their royal paymasters.

  5. Brilliant, Excellent, Nice etc. have been usual exclamations for your blog, so even if I forget to mention it, please assume it to be there. And those, who are die-hard fans of your writings, firmly believe that you don't write a word if you don't have a substance. Coming to CNN-IBN's twist & Shout, as congress leaders are vehemently defending their leadership (i.e. Sonia Gandhi) and there is a unwritten competition as who shouts more; the same competition is going among the channels being paid (may be)to show their loyalty to her. Arvind Kejriwal who seems being promoted by Congress as they are promoting Raj Thackrey to eat away undecided anti-congress votes. AK will win a few seats belonging to BJP and will end up supporting Congress (secular, remember). BJP is dying its own death as Congress has put several moles there and they are now more are less working hard to tear BJP apart. What else we spectators can do, just wait and watch how things unfold in time.

    1. Manish, I agree that AK may end up spoiling a few of BJP's prospective seats though BJP does not require help in this regard; they are capable of it themselves - Why mercy kill when the suicide is on?

However,I doubt AK was invited to dare a brick on the Palace Gates to get an entry.

  6. regarding grilling of the gandhis or even vadra for that matter these mediacrooks will be in a state of 'aage se gila aur pichhe se pila' - lines of paresh rawal in a hindi movie.

  7. What’s your problem with our media celebs Ravi? With hard work and compromises they have achieved "Excellence in crookedness"; to become the best 'useful idiots' available to corrupts and CONS. It’s a well paid job with hidden perks but not an easy job. You see they endure insults when caught lying and when defeated in arguments they have to defend themselves with shouts and noises. Try doing it!! you won’t be able to play this role even for a day.
Ravinar why do you use this brilliant ability to shred their cloak of pretence they wear to proclaim themselves as crusaders of truth. And you hit them where it hurts the most, picking out holes in their theatrics. Worst of all you publish those observations and then a crowd joins you to lampoon them.

  8. KT is a living example of how journalism in India has touched nadir. The questions he asked are not questions but wild allegation, is this we call journalism in India.I am sure KT's brain is no bigger than a peanut. His interview was an insult to journalism.A good journalist should be able to bring facts out of the interviewe by confronting him with logical statements, facts and cross questioning and not by throwing some bull shit allegation just to get his paycheck cleared with a 5% bonus from congress high command. I would rate this interview by KT as the worst interview till date in 2012, complete waste of time.AK responded very aptly by challenging KT guts, but I think AK made a mistake because eunuchs like KT are far from guts.

Is it worth investigating why Mukesh Ambani gives his corporate jet free to TDK so often which is against the conditions for owning a jet?

  12. So now it's crime to be anti-Congress.?!?!?!

No Sonia Gandhi on live TV, no Raul Vinci on live TV, no Robert Vadra on live TV.

But plenty of defenders of the above Messiahs of corruption and looting. There is only so many foot soldiers they can send until the guillotine starts coming down on the big wigs.

  13. The Karan Thapar programme is NOT an interview, its' called Devil's Advocate where he puts across OPPOSING point-of-views / questions to participants. This isn't a Barkha Dutt style, "How do you feel today interview", so please respect the context of the programme.

As far as I can tell, Karan did a fine job in playing the Devil's (RV) Advocate and Arvind did an equally fine job of answering them. 20-minutes of serious intellectual stimulation, when was that last done on Indian TV? Congress has hired lawyers as its' media-defence, who many-a-times leave logic behind and only delivery through their cacophony.

    3. well, the problem is he should be playing devils advocate with vadra and not kejriwal.after all who is in power today?.even if no quid pro quo can be established he has accepted favours from a public company with a lot of private shareholders.india IS ONE OF THE FEW COUNTRIES where minority shareholder rights are not protected but even so it is widely acknowledged that minority shareholder interest should always be on the mind of a company's management.can anybody argue that what vadra and dlf did was immoral even if any proof of quid pro quo cannot be brought out?how can the media and the congress dipsticks defend vadra's highly immoral act and what wrong does kejriwal do other than pointing out the serious malaises in our politics?all that these smug, judgemental, vain media guys do is point out the flaws in whoever does something about these congress parasites. how many times can you remember kt grilling the 'congress high command' with the same intensity?he is just another pompous journalist.

  15. This whole thing is orchestrated and made it big by the media crooks to just get publicity for AK so that middle class voters split for him in Delhi elections.

Remember! When this news came in Economic TImes, the scumbags ignored it.

Even now, AK is careful not to blame the MAFIA lady or Priyanka or Rahul. Just Vadra. Then they spin again that Vadra is on his own taking advantage of Sonia's name or accuse AK of attacking Sonia using RV.

Look at this article written by scumbag Rajdeep

    http://www.firstpost.com/politics/team-kejriwal-forget-national-power-start-with-delhi-polls-480261.html
Team Kejriwal, forget national power, start with Delhi polls
    by Rajdeep Sardesai (Oct 5)

This is the advice of PAID scumbag to AK. Then they orchestrate this whole drama to bring AK some publicity, accuse BJP of protecting Vadra to hide their own skeletons, and sidestep Sonia's travel costs story which was not going away.

Imagine if this was brought up by BJP. The scumbag crooks in the media would call him classless attacking Sonia. Now that BJP is not aggressive because they can be accused of making it personal, the crooks are attacking them that they have motives. Works well because Delhi electorate can suspect BJP and vote for AK. Anyway, AK can't get more than 5-10% votes but that would be enough to defeat BJP in Delhi elections. That is the plan by media crooks and ruling crooks whose goal is the same. Let the crooks rule for another term and they can come up with another scheme at the end of next 5 years.

    1. Dear Vivek2020,

I seriously believe that Delhi voters deserve Congress Governments. That's because Delhi does not have any majority votebank & hence everybody defends himself with bribes & Jugaad. Perfect recipe for Congress to rule.Anyways, the BJP seems not interested in winning over Delhi with its weak local leadership. Chood na kaiko apne dimag ka dahi karneka ??

As an ordinary Indian, I feel extremely frustrated at the machinations of the ruling Gandhi dynasty and their army of criminal sycophants and worshippers. I cannot thank Ranvinar bhai enough for giving a voice to people like me.
