NDTV - Evolving The Gandhi

It is not as if it’s a big secret that NDTV has been the mouthpiece of Congress for a long time. Still, with the brazen manipulation of debates and excessive media coverage of one family they have now out-done even the erstwhile Russian mouthpiece Pravda. In modern days NDTV could even come close to the national media of North Korea. Of course, in all this all their journalistic principles have been ground to dust long back. The latest attempt to promote Rahul Gandhi comes in the form of a discussion moderated by Barkha Dutt (who else could it have been?) in a programme titled “The Evolution of Rahul Gandhi”. Hmmm! If the number of times the coming of age and evolution of RG has been talked about he would have far exceeded Darwin’s theories and expectations. Barkha herself could claim to be a Rahul-specific Darwin!

The participants in the debate by Barkha were R.P.N. Singh (Congress), Sudheendra Kulkarni (BJP), Neeraj Chaudary (SP) and Meghnad Desai, the floating alien who seems to be more on Indian TV  than back home in UK.

First let us state a fact. After the thrashing the Congress received in many other states, especially Bihar, Rahul Gandhi took the Mamata route to agitate at farmer hotspots and land related fights in UP. He has spent a good deal of time campaigning in UP right from November 14, 2011. Has he put in strong efforts? Sure, in terms of rallies, road-shows and meetings RG has committed himself to the campaign whole-heartedly. What about Priyanka? She has done her hit and run appearances. But did RG say anything substantial or outline any real singular plan of any consequence? Other than muslim reservations (which was dramatized more by Salman Khurshid rather than RG) and elephants eating money RG’s utterances, as in the past, have been simply nonsensical and not one statement or act of his have suggested that he has indeed come of age or evolved. He has only provided more evidence in all the media coverage that Congress still considers UP voters to be idiots. He’s not alone, he finds company in Barkha Dutt who equally hopes TV viewers to be idiots who can be dazzled with BS. So the agenda of NDTV is to somehow make RG look like the “Great white hope” for UP and the nation. So let’s analyse the debate on some mere statistics which will make interesting reading:

1.   The Barkha show is for 51.16 minutes. Okay! Now, it starts with a tribute to RG and the Gandhis and a monologue from her which lasts all of 16.40 minutes. Yes 16.40 minutes of monologue by the supposed moderator in a programme of 51.16 minutes (and includes about a minute of sound-bites from Akhilesh Yadav, Digvijay Singh and Swapan Dasgupta). Prelude to a great debate, isn’t it?

2.    Now what about timeshare to others in the discussion? Here’s what each one got in total:
       R.P.N.Singh (Congress) –          9.40 Mins.
Sudheendra Kulkarni (BJP) –   5.20 Mins.
Neeraj Chaudhary (SP) –           2.30 Mins.
Meghnad Desai (Nobody) –       3.00 Mins.
       Audience (Questions) –              3.30 Mins.

3.   So the panelists and the audience put together got  24 minutes out of a total of 51.16 minutes (with interruptions from Barkha). So who got the remaining 27.16 minutes? Yeah, the supposed moderator herself! That’s how you manipulate a debate when the moderator hogs 53% of timeshare for discussions.

Never mind the discussion itself. It was a regular RG promo. Consider this: Kulkarni makes a minor point of RG tearing up a piece of paper and that being poor behaviour and who responds? It is not the Congressman or another panelist but Barkha herself who springs to RG’s defence. She counters it with all the chairs and mics thrown in assemblies or porn being watched by MLAs. Haha! So why does she need panelists at all? She doubles up as both the moderator and Congress spokesperson that even gets the most time in the supposed debate.

Anyway, the most important question in the programme came from Neeraj Chaudhury of SP. To the nonsense of Singh, and the Congress in general, who kept claiming they will do substantially better in UP, Chaudhury asked what exactly is “substantial”. To that Singh claimed they will get 200 seats and once again Barkha interrupts that even 70 could be substantial. Really? So the moderator here gives us an idea of what the Congress mind is more than the Congress spokesman himself. Once again, why does NDTV need a Congress spokesperson at all? The awful truth of the matter is that the party currently has 22 seats (5%) in a 403-member assembly. Can any party of a national standing really sink any further?  Even without the evolution or coming of age of RG or his entire family a party has to be absolutely pathetic to be doing worse than 22 seats. (RG did manage to do that in Bihar earlier though). However, the sheer number of seats being much higher than Bihar and given the unhappiness over the current UP govt it wouldn’t take much to get past 22 or even get past 50.

The final question the likes of Barkha never ask is: if not Gandhi, who? In a party that has become the private estate of the Gandhi family who else can really campaign for them? Digvijay? Chidambaram? Pranab? Manmohan? Pilot? Scindia? Bansal? Ambika? Manu Singhvi? Manish Tiwari?  Anyone else? At best, all of them put together can only be sidekicks to Rahul Gandhi. Even RG himself without the Gandhi name would be a sidekick to himself. All this talk of coming of age or evolution of RG is merely clever propaganda by Barkha Dutt, NDTV and some more media channels. Unfortunately for NDTV it’s not a hot-shot channel among a huge majority of UP voters. Their manipulation of evolution may just please those that have a mini-bar in their drawing room.

Update - February 19: Although the statistics in the post make the skullduggery of Barkha's show pretty obvious an Anonymous commenter (Feb 18) enlarges upon it. I quote the comment:

1. Even after the initial lecture by Barkha the Congress guy gets the highest individual time 9.40 mins.
2. The opponents of RahulG, the BJP and SP, collectively get only 7.50 mins which is almost 2 mins less than RPN.
3. The nobody, Meghnad, with no stake in the campaign gets even more time than a serious contender like SP.
4. Apart from 16.40 mins in the beginning, even during open discussions Barkha still gets over 10mins, higher than anyone else.
I think in future all debates on TV should have an indicator showing time consumed by each panellist that would show if the debate is fair.

  1. Sorry about the rather long comment. I am just thinking out loud here.

It is not surprising that Barkha / NDTV is supporting the erstwhile first family. It is not even that they shed their journalistic ethos to shamelessly tout a single family as a savior of the country. Not to mention the reality where that family has supervised a massive loot of the country's public funds over the past 7 / 8 years.

The surprising thing is that she still has a fan following. It is a fact that a majority of Urban youngsters go by what they hear in NDTV. Even hard core BJP supporters are swayed by the Goebbelian propaganda being spread by these channels. While it is true that the number of people who disbelieve, and dislike these channels / 'hosts' have increased considerably over the past few years - it is a fact that a majority of urban Indian population still does. And when it comes to the final reckoning of selecting a government at the centre, this propaganda pays off handsomely, as it did in 2007.

And besides that, I wonder about this next point: what do they get by supporting the Congress? Obviously, if it is money - you support whichever government is in power, and they will throw the bones - yes, the BJP is no bunch of saints anymore. If it is influence that you want, ditto - good example was the nexus between Pramod Mahajan and Reliance.

The answer that stares me on my face is so obvious that it is unbelievable - religious considerations. If that is true, then the channels should fess up about their leanings - a.k.a conflicts of interest.

I do remember a show that was conducted by Nidhi Razdan before the last election. It was a young and completely Congress crowd and it was aimed at bashing up the BJP. I was shocked too, that all the audience were totally bought into the NDTV point of view.

    5. You're right, most educated, urban youngsters listen to these debates but do we have a choice? Urban youth don't give a damn about Hindi channels like India TV & Aaj Tak who talk crap. As far as English News channels are concerned - NDTV is Congress' spokesperson, on CNN-IBN Rajdeep Sardesai has started a personal smear campaign aginst Modi & Gujarat and on Times Now, no debate is worth watching since the moderator - Mr. Arnab loves screaming at the top of his voice.

He cant deliver a healthy speech. Totally incompetent as is visible from his actions.Twitter and fb are being controlled by the gove since 4 months. There isnt a single national news channel that is neutral in nature. there are just very few newspapers which are neutral. Where do u see india going from here on. I only see India moving towards a Pseudo-Democratic totalitarian society if not near to north korea in terms of political standards. It only saddens me that our country is filled with too gullible people on the one hand and utter sycophants on the other.. Hope NDTV and the likes get some sense soon..

  12. CEO of NDTV, Sonia Singh is married to a kongressi minister in union cabinet. Doesn't that makes NDTV a congress channel? Why do we expect it be otherwise? Do we expect Sun TV to not act as mouthpiece of DMK or Jaya TV to be balanced to both the factions? IMO, we give too much importance to NDTV and especially to Barkha Dutt. Like the editor of Saamna, Barkha is too doing her job of keeping her political bosses happy.

  21. Well common sense says for a party which didnt have any organisation on the ground, no cadres , zero interest in people, it will be an achievement if they get 70 seats. You can get 2/3rd majority in one go. On the other side is a party which will not even win 60 seats. I have been in UP for the last one month and have interacted with a wide range of people from upper middle class to the paanwalah. If BJP gets 60 seats they should celebrate because no one in UP even discusses them. They are non-entities now. My analysis based on hard facts on the ground is BSP will be the no.1 party but no majority, congress and SP fight for no.2 and no.3 position,( its a revival for congress) and well BJP will get 50 seats. Even upper caste supporters have left them for congress this time, BSP is losing upper caste which it had last time to congress, the OBC which BJP thought will come to them has not, it has been a gross miscalculation on their part. Muslim vote will be split between SP and peace party. SP is gaining tremendously in semi urban and rural areas. BSP has its loyal dalit votes but others like upper caste are leaving them for congress.

ETV for Telugu Desam, Sakshi is pro jagan, similarly TV9, NTV, TV5 etc. Perhaps the same exists in other states also. My point is why single out NDTV, CNN-IBN, Times NOW and other. Everyone knows that NDTV has congress written all over it. Something needs be done to silence these mouthpieces, not just in national level english media but regional media also. Also, During elections, are these really channels monitored & censored ? Is there there a law against propaganda against/for a party.

The point is that at a regional level, every party has a news channel. So it pretty much balances it out. But at the national level all these MSM are aligned to congress thought process which does not bode well for the viewers as it does not present a balanced view. On top of it, most of these MSM fake data and display only the -ve news of congress opponents. Suppressing facts, feeding distorted viewpoints to the viewers is what these channels are indulging in for the congress, which in my opinion, is a crime and not just shoddy journalism.

By the way, Sakshi is not pro Jagan. It is Jagan's.

  40. I liked the way this article has been written. Explaining the time each person got on the show and thus showing how biased the media is.

Please continue to expose this kind of media crooks. My support to you.

@ the person asking the question "what we do"?:
How many people do you think from the same constituency read this article? and how many people do you think from the same constituency saw the NDTV show?

This is were intellectual heroes on the social media like the person who wrote this article comes and spread the awareness to the mass.

  41. Dear , My Analysis here is not for Rg but for the congress as a whole. It has a peculiar character. Leave alone Lal Bahadur Shastry's and Narsimha Rao's small Stint and Dr Man Mohan Singh's UPA 1 and UPA 2 Congress is unrest and desperate to give back the throne to the Nehru Dynasty. They have waited for solid 25 years counting every minute and second to see RG to grow as an adult and mature to be able to become PM direct. And if NDTV is just helping them to achieve that (impossible) Goal then we should not raise our eye brows.

In fact to swindle election (as they used to do in Pre TN Seshan Era) which helped congress to manipulate Elections by hook or by crook to stick to the power has gone by that is why they need help of NDTV. Otherwise NDTV had to take help of Congress to remain in business!

But don't bother India has changed Now and NDTV cannot influence it . . .

  48. I saw this programme but as soon as I observed that she is infact made this programme for Rahul Gandhi which is obvious I changed the channel. Earlier I was fan of prannoy and Barkha too. Subsequently it is clear that they r just making programmes for congress without bringing real issues like corruption and I minimised watching this channel. Thanks to social media and bloggers for bringing out real issues.

    1. Yes, I was also fan of prannoy roy when he started World this week on DD some 20-25 years back. In those days I was a college student and WTW was the only resource to get International News, but soon I realized that WTW was just showing clips copied from some International News channels like BBC, CNN etc. and bundling as WTW. Just copying, no creativity and originality.

Shame on all Indian English MSM.

  49. I am not surprised at all by her actions, the Radia Tape has brought every thing in open about her. It is shame that a tainted journalist like her contnues to be in NDTV after that. I too have stopped watching that channel.

  52. I have stopped watching NDTV long time back - perhaps the last one was when a speaker of the calibre of Chetan Bhagat was not allowed to complete even one line in a show 'moderated' by BD and another corrupt and protecting all her foreign funds, Tavleen Singh interrupted to talk at every turn. If one had done some stats of that show, it could have been 70% TS, 25% BD and 5% others.
Bring greater awareness about the NDTV like sloppy and biased media. Shun them completely. Literate youth need to be made aware and they should be made (forced) to go to the polling booths.

  53. Watch IBN7 --Ashutos...and Times now -Pranav...I am sure NDTV ratio will go down in coming days...Remember people are more educated now...for example in pune no one is purchaing flats becase of unneccessary rate increased from pune builder lobby...

  55. Barkha Dutt represents a class of Gandhi family ass licking "Respected Journalists." NDTV is nothing more than Nehru Dynasty TV (term not coined by me but read it on some blog and liked it a lot). It had ceased to be a News Channel long long long back and even in doing business, they are hopeless. If their "Babes" news readers can go out in flesh market (cannot go to any activity involving brains) then it can turn the corner and only then NDTV can become profitable.

I had said in my response to an ealier post by Ravinar and I repeat again. BJP should be smart enough to hit NDTV and CNN-IBN where it will hurt them most. Stop going to their chat shows. And let it be publicly known that they have stopped going since the reporting/view is heavily biased. 3-4 monhts of such boycott will see their ratings (whatever left) in downward spiral and sponsors will vanish. Hurt them in a Gandhian way. This will ensure that other channels will work hard on objective reporting and will be wary of singing Congress Bhajans.

Anyone from BJP reading this blog, think seriously about this. It will help you and the Nation in the long run.

Very nice post Ravinar - I follow your blog regularly and I am glad that I do.

  56. Guys,

NDTV has been losing market share. It has stayed afloat by the money channeled from middle-east. BD is one of the most hated tv personalities in india. She gets heckled whenever she steps out of her television studio. (just google for 'barkha dutt india gate'). So don't give too much importance to what is being said on ELM. If ELMs had shaped the opinion of India then NaMo would not be CM today. Watch DD News if you are too irritated by what is on these 24/7 Breaking News channels.

  58. Its really a very disturbing and distressing trend that while paid media crooks continue to assault collective intellect of perceptive and sensitive society (I wont use the word EDUCATED), people in general have long forgotten how to rationalise.
Its not always beneficial to jump to either camps of pro or against on any given issue. Its sad to watch a nation's intellectual reasoning and rationalising capability being totally hijacked, numbed and aborted by continuous bomabardment of inanities sponsored endlessly by today's channels/media.

    1. Even after radia tapes have clearly exposed media politician nexus, why no criminal proceedings initiated against Burkha Dutt and others.
    2. Why does the BJP agree to appear on TV programs moderated by crooked and pro congress journos ?
    3. Why hasn't the BJP started its own channel or at least support existing pro BJP media ?
    4. Why does prannoy roy continue to employ burqua dutt ?

Mr. Ravinar, keep up the good work. We are with you

  60. The biggest question with which we are confronted is that how do we alert people (on a large scale) about such mainstream journalists?

  61. The campaign against Modi will go down in Indian history as the most well organized, systematic propaganda in which the media, political class and NGO's all joined hands to manufacture opinion and facts. After 12 years, if you cannot find enough evidence to make him even a co-accused using the strictest of legal tests administered by the Supreme Court, leave aside convict him, then that says a lot about this shameless propaganda.

  63. Well , I am always taken by surprise by the fact that how the whole of media paints rahul gandhi as a sole young future PM of india ... in reality a rapist in his own constituency .. LOL ... i mean media does such a great job as if he is the only who can bring development (lol)
He enjoys life all the time in USA and comes to india only for elections and he is the young leader of india ... we even dont know clearly who he is really and what he do all the time . media has played a great role in projecting rahul gandhi.

  64. Hey,

I have no way of verifying this, and it might just be a conspiracy theory but someone like you- Ravinar, can and must investigate who really owns, funds the Indian Media. I recieved an e-mail from a friend which had the following details.

NDTV: funded by Gospels of Charity in Spain. Recently developed a soft corner towards Pakistan because Zardari allowed only this channel to be aired in Pakistan. CEO Prannoy Roy is co-brother of Prakash Karat, General Secretary of the Communist party of India. Also, it is speculated that in 2002, in the aftermath of the Gujarat Riots, NDTV recieved several million dollars from NGO in Saudi Arabia to cover only one side (aint it obvious which one??) of the story.

India Today: used to be the only national weekly which, once supported by the BJP is now bought by NDTV!! Since then the tone has changed drastically and turned anti Hindu(tva).

CNN-IBN: Largely funded by Southern Baptist Church with its branches all over the world and HQ'ed in the US. The Church annually allocates $800 million for promotion of this channel. Its Indian head is Rajdeep Sardesai and his wife Sagarika Ghosh.

Times Group: owned by Bennet & Coleman. World Christian Council does 80 percent of the funding, and an Englishman and an Italian equally share the remaining 20 percent. The Italian Robertio Mindo is (supposedly, but she has even been linked to Mussolini)a close relative of Sonia Gandhi.

Star TV: It is run by Rupert Murdoch (News of the World and Sun fame), who is supported by St. Peters Pontifical Church Melbourne, Aus.

Hindustan Times: Owned by Birla Group, but hands have changed since Shobana Bhartiya took over. Presently it is working in collaboration with the Times Group.

The Hindu: English daily, started over 125 years back has been recently taken over by Joshua Society, Berne , Switzerland. N. Ram's wife is a Swiss national.

Indian Express: Divided into two groups. The Indian Express and New Indian Express (southern edition) A.C.T.S Christian Ministries have a major stake in the Indian Express and latter is still with the Indian counterpart.

Eeenadu: Controlled by an Indian named Ramoji Rao. Ramoji Rao is connected with the telegu film industry and owns a huge studio in Andhra Pradesh. Also a member of parliament.

Andhra Jyothi: The Muslim party of Hyderabad known as MIM along with a Congress Minister has purchased this Telugu daily very recently. Source and width of funding is still unknown.

The Statesman: Controlled by the Communist Party of India. Source and width of funding is still unknown.

Kairali TV: It is controlled by Communist party of India (Marxist). Source and width of funding is still unknown.

Mathrubhoomi: Leaders of Muslim League and Communist party have a major investment. Other partners, source and width of funding is still unknown.

Asian Age and Deccan Chronicle: Owned by a Saudi Arabian Company with its chief Editor M.J. Akbar.

    Ravinar,
The one who pays the piper, decides the tune. Its important to know where all the money comes from. In other words, who would want/benefit to see Sonia-Rahul in power.
Hope to get an answer soon.

    -Raakshus

  65. Hi Ravinar,

This 'Anonymous' is doing a great damage to you. Pl do not go by him. He seems to be an idiot like the Khan in our MSN days.

I do not understand why so much mails poured in for this article, which to me is nothing but an ordinary.

This is an insipid article which does not require so much of a response. The world knows what is NDTV. That is all.

It gives me an impression that you have hired gundaas, I mean, fake writers to boot your point. It amounts to self killing. Ravinar, my dear brother, pl keep off from the enthusiam that the number of 'anonymous' types of feed backs. Good luck.

  66. Dear Ravinar,

Now a days we hear a lot of discussions on MSM comparing Rahul Baby & Akhilesh. Similarities are discussed such as both are young & educated ??? with background of their Dynastic politics, etc etc. The real story behind this harmless comparison seems to be that somehow they are able to compare the otherwise failed Rahul with atleast somebody. Far Better than comparing him with a proven leader such as Mayavati or Uma Bharati !!!! Such Perverts.

  68. Very well, Mr/Ms Anonymous. You do not deny that this is an anti-Congress blog. There are media crooks of various political persuasions, but this blog can't seem to see beyond those batting for the Congress. There are an equal, if not more, number of pro-BJP crooks in the media.

    2. Being a pro-Congress or pro BJP is not a crime. Actually the real crime is when channels such as NDTV & CNN-IBN or News Corporations like Hindustan times pretend to be neutral but act as a mouthpiece of a particular party against another particular party. If journalists start propagating hidden agendas then they should also shed their bogus neutrality so that people won't be fooled. I sincerely feel Ravinar is not trying to fool anybody as he has already declared himself as Right wing supporter.

    3. I agree Barkha is promoting Rahul. simple to be a PM first be a CM.Do not stake your claim just because you are somebodys son. serve your country, earn your credits and not swindle tax payers money. There should be a rule which bars any one from being in politics for more then 15 years. We should get new minds in every election and not the same drama of kissing your wife or mother in front of public.

  69. ravinar, u continue to amaze me.. ur thoughts are clear n lucid.. good one! keep writing more.. u are doing a commendable job but i am afraid the no of ignorant ppl, even amongst the educated, is amazingly high n so far that stays, congress will continue with all the bad that's happening in our media.. the mtv generation, diligently fed on crap, has no time for thinking n analyzing! i will try spreading this blog.. lets see how many read!

i will give u an example.. i recently asked a colleague which political party she supports and why? she said congress n coz of rahul gandhi? i again asked? coz he is good looking.. she said, oh! no, not coz of that.. "just like that!" but this time i dont think i will vote for BJP.. i persisted.. why? she said.. "dont know!" i "think" they are better than congress this time!

so, unless our generation, becomes logically aware n can weigh their options n opinions n know the value of their vote, be aware n conscious, it would be very difficult to weed out the rot.. but our endeavors must not stop.. i have full faith that someday, good will happen.. thanks again for this wonderful blog!
