India's Biggest Mafia

Of the thousands of comments on this blog site there a handful of commenters that call it a Pro-BJP site. Some add humour by calling it a ‘BJP-funded’ blog. To me, this suggests that these commenters probably do not work in a media outlet or have little or no understanding of how media houses work. And this is not in any way to suggest that all other commenters do. If funding or profit was the only motive for a political blog the only sensible thing to do would be run a Pro-Congress blog. I guarantee you the returns can be handsome. But then again this is not a political blog. If it were, the title and tag line of the blog would have been very different. In the previous post one commenter summed it up stating “…any criticism of the media is pro BJP and anti-Congress. So criticism of media=criticism of Congress?”. This is what has become the mantra of Congress sympathisers. They have been consumed so much by Paidmedia, they are no more able to distinguish the party from much of the media itself. So what’s it all about? Well, there are many gangs in India and this blog is dedicated to just one gang – The media. Lately, the choice of the media to describe such gangs is “Mafia” so let’s begin with some minor understanding of the mafia.

Originally, to be a Mafiosi you had to be of Sicilian origin. In foreign lands the term ‘Paisan’ is also used to describe Italian, Sicilian descendants who could be part of the mafia. The mafia then is a network of many bosses controlling many different turfs and activities. We call it crime, they call it business. And the businesses extend from smuggling, extortion, match-fixing, gambling and so on. Each turf is headed by a ‘Made-man’ who is the local boss. Only a Sicilian or Italian can be a boss. His foot soldiers (who could be of any race) are known as ‘Wiseguys’ (or fashionably ‘Goodfellas’). It’s the wiseguys who do most of the dirty work. So just as after Watergate almost every scandal is suffixed with ‘Gate’ every gang has come to be termed mafia, at least in India.

Our media has successfully tagged every such gang as mafia. So you have Land mafia, Mining mafia, Liquor mafia, Timber mafia, Corporate mafia, Trade mafia, Fake-currency mafia and the list can go on and on. They usually leave out two mafias. Both are bedfellows. One is the political mafia and the other, even more dangerous one, is the Media Mafia. Look deep into our media. You will find extortion, blackmail, murder, connections with anti-national elements, black money. Everything you can associate with a regular mafia you will find in equal measure in the media too. But since they claim to be ‘God’s own messengers’ they will never expose their own mafia.

Every mafia thrives on a few specific sources of income, what’s that for the media mafia? Advertising and through that revenue the power to influence opinions! Circulation, viewership may help the ad rates but they don’t directly generate great revenues. And so this mafia came up with the great idea of paid news too. Earlier, in the print media the art was to bring out spurious supplements which may look like a casual entertaining read but were actually ‘Paid for’ supplements. Now that art has taken the form of great scientific methodology. Take even Bollywood! Every movie release has a scientific methodology to it. Or even ever wondered why Ram Gopal Verma’s movies are trashed in the media even weeks before release?

Now, let’s come back to the question of why any anti-media article or site invariably appears to be anti-Congress. No need for a history class but India has long been ruled by the Congress, and still is, and therefore the greatest income source. Don’t be under the illusion that the corporate world alone is a great ad revenue source. In the past most print media would find it hard to even survive without govt ads and most of them had a person dedicated to dealing with the govt ad department (The DAVP or the State Information Depts.). Now add to that all the PSUs, the various govt. bodies (like PWD, Municipality, Water resources etc.).  Aha you say! It is bigger than any corporate segment and bigger than the land and mining mafias. Yes indeed, it is so damn lucrative that in most states almost every political party has its own media outlet. Yep, even the Congress in some states. Surprisingly, it's only the BJP that doesn't have one yet.

So you’d ask if it’s all about govt doles why Congress alone? Let’s take Indian Express for instance. This once strongly anti-establishment newspaper is now a big Congress mouthpiece. Why? Because internal divisions and competition has more or less threatened its existence. It survives. And how do you think it does? Now if there were a BJP or some other govt at the centre yes there would be dole outs too but with the Congress the dole outs can be extra-ordinarily disproportionate. How do you explain Shobana Bhartiya being an RS member? Do you expect her Hindustan Times to be fair and balanced? HT has another extension – NDTV. They are linked by the informal association of their editors who appear in each other’s media outlet. How do you explain a financial disaster such as NDTV still on air? How do you explain a consistent loss making CNN-IBN still on air? (Only recently they’ve been bailed out by Reliance).

A media house like Hindustan Times or NDTV having a bias in favour of Congress is not a crime. It is when most of the national media outlets have a severe bias in favour of Congress that it becomes a MAFIA. And it is true that most of the media outlets have become a Congress mouthpiece. The recent elections and coverage of politicians would tell you enough. It is when their bias leads them to commit crimes by spreading untruths, fake reports, excessive spin, fake and fixed debates and even utter lies against the opposition and other parties that blogs like these are born. This mafia has found a very profitable equation with the Congress at the centre. Why would they want to change that, eh? In fact, they will do their best to ensure there is more of Congress in as many states as possible. Isn’t that why all the scams of YSR and Jagan Reddy are only coming out after the former’s death and the latter’s quitting the Congress? Now wait for the Gujarat elections where it’s a clear BJP V Congress fight. Watch how many lies and spins will show up.

Okay, so how else does it profit to be a mafia in league with Congress? List all the names: Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and all the deaths and anniversaries and every major project launches after their names. Where do you think the huge ad and media spend goes? And to all of this, just add ‘Paidnews’. How does it make it profitable to be a mouthpiece for anyone but the Congress? So just like the mafia bosses our editors guard their turf and have regular meetings all together. Secret meetings! The last such opportunity would have been the very SECRETIVE RahulGandhi-‘Off the record’ breakfast meet. Their ‘wiseguys’ are on the field, on the ground and extend the bosses’ work. How do you explain the now commonly used term ‘Hit-job’ in relation to articles by journos? That’s a mafia term, isn’t it? Wait a few years it will be properly known as a "Whack-job"!

In December 2011 Umesh Agarwal premiered his documentary on Paid News under an event of Moneylife (edited by Sucheta Dalal). This documentary titled “The open frame” is now on youtube and other sites going by the name “Brokering news”. Although limited in its effort one must commend the effort of the producers and the director. Do watch the video below:

The documentary does not touch upon the ‘mafia’ like work of the media for very obvious reasons. (It was produced in association with Prasar Bharti). Here’s what Umesh Agarwal had to say after the premiere: “Every aspect of news be it political, business, sports or entertainment had a price tag. Even panel discussions on an important national issue were ‘fixed”. Guests were invited to give the discussion a particular slant. Selection of guests wasn’t dictated by the editorial policy of the group but there were other considerations”.

The 'Made-guy' is free to kill anyone, anytime, even the wiseguys. But no one can kill the Made-Guy unless a majority of all the bosses approve. Does that explain how and why many of our editorialists continue to hold their jobs despite their crimes?

And that is that! Next time you hear an anchor or an editorialist mentioning the word Mafia just imagine, it could be the media's ‘Wiseguy’ or ‘Made-guy’. It's simply India's biggest mafia talking to you.

  1. Why are you silent about 'The Hindu' and its sister 'Frontline'?

    1. No Sir, you can't bracket Hindu/Frontline with 24/7 Indian english news channels or with TOI/HT/DNA/Daily Telegraph/IE especially the ShekarGupta edition.ram who runs Hindu group is a card carrying leftist and the paper is the mouth piece for the leftist ideals. But they are not crooks who will take money from the crooked political ruling clans and publish lies/half truths and slandar. If you leave the political articles, most of the rest published in Hindu is first class written by journalists( who are highly coloured) who have a passion for journalism. Two of the best I read in Hindu are Anand parthasarathy and Nirmal Shekar.Your flippant quip mentioning Hindu in the same bracket of TOI reconfirms to me that Indian english speaking middle/upper level especially hindus are a big bunch of dumb lads

    2. Hello, shiv,
I am surprised by the shrillness of your 'reply'. I have been monitoring this blog for quite some time. I have so far not seen any comment about The Hindu or its sister Frontline in this blog. That is why I have left the above comment. I happened to append it to a piece related 'Mafia in the Media'.

      Shiv,
I have not commented upon the post. I haven't bracketed anyone with anyone else. Don't put words into my mouth, as you journalists always do.

    3. OK.. let me try and answer..

The Hindu is big in South, particularly TN.. but in other places not so great in print. So I get to access their articles only online and I dont read Frontline at all. Secondly, Hindu bias is not covert so I consider that a lesser crime. And while not exactly dedicating any post to them throughout the site there are many references or quotes from The Hindu. On the positive side you will also find many quotes of P. Sainath.

Lastly, you will find that this blog responds more to TV which has a larger reach as against print or online MSM. Also, posts are usually triggered by some program or incident or immediate event and not necessarily by a varied choice of media.

      Thanks

  5. Hindu is pro DMK in the first place and pro cong in the second place. One must have valour for contrition; if they are associated with one notion but to be ashamed to call unbiased but in letter and spirit biased.

To call this blog as pro BJP it is imperative to call them drunkards who seeks the lamp post for support rather than its illumination.

Mind it when the university of Madras on the dictum of DMK refused to accommodate Raul Vinci this blog was the pioneer to condemn it. When they deserve cake they get it if deserve cow dung the get that too. But unfortunately the governance deserves more of the latter and if given then who is at fault if analysed they will get the impartial answer.

No fool would associate with other if for money than cong since, the inflow will be unfathomable

Vaidya, you are right and I see why.Ram's love for DMK must come out of his hatred of fellow brahmins and also being a bit afraid of the thuggery and his pro cong(i) is mainly driven on issues where he is rabid anti BJP which comes out again because of his anti brahmin/perhaps anti hindu feelings. This explains why i have poor respect for journalists as I don't consider them professionals.A professional journalist is one who chases a story for its truthfulness without worrying of becoming unpopular or loosing out on free handouts of money/women/booze or going against his/her own ideology so that when they write their piece they tell exactly what is going on and why.It is for the reader to judge and take sides.Unfortunately, world over what we see is jaundiced journalists. Now all these clowns are wondering why the readers are no longer buying their newspapers/watching newschannels, worse, why they are migrating to internet.

  6. Ravi, You have opened up the eyes of many who knew nothing on the subject till now. It is a total stink out there both in the electronics an print media. Why blame politicians alone for all the ills of the country? There is scum in all our walks of life and it is this scum that we should try to clear out? May be some few atomic bombs will do the trick?

Can any right thinking individual read a news paper which is without bias? Can any one watch 10 minutes of news item in any of our English TV channels?. The blood will shoot up or a BP prone person will collapse because of frustration and anger. So much to our media.

We need 1000s of Ravis to educate our public and yet a vast majority will remain quiet. Is it a bane or a bless for this country called Bharat?. Hi Ram!!

  8. A few lawyers hit a fewer journalists, and damaged a few OB vans. The police hit a few lawyers in retaliation. All the local TV news channels reported deaths when there were no deaths. The issue snowballed into a much bigger issue after that. This is a small example of how media spreads untruth which provokes public into acts of violence.

    1. That day after 3pm, local news channels announced repeatedly that the DCP was seriously injured in the head and 4 constables are in critical condition. After a few minutes news channels falsely announced that 4 policemen died. This provoked the police who, were till then not using force, to act. Then they beat a few lawyers in frustration. But the media gave the public a one sided story- like they (media) are all innocent sheep and the lawyers and police beat them for no reason.

Ever since I read all your posts, my way of looking at TIMESNOW TV's "newshour debates" has changed & now I can see through their (especially of the "WISEGUY" - Arnab Goswami) LIES, DECEIT & their unabashed TILT towards all things Congress & their BJP bashing. Like many of your other comment writers here, I can see that wicked smile of HT guy Vinod Sharma, that self-proclaimed seasoned veteran Kumar Ketkar & that Jaundiced Outlook editor's so-called balanced views. Any sane person is aware about the trash these news channels are forking out.Times now started as comparatively balanced channel exposing CWG & Adarsh scams till renewal of lease of Mumbai property came up.Now Congress started squeezing the pressure & result is for all to see.Its more Congressi then anyone.

MSY & Mayawati can be managed through CBI & friendly supreme court Judges.Remember Cyriac Joseph retired without delivering judgement on Mulayam S Yadav n its family members after sitting over it for 5 years.the other judge on this infamous bench was Justice Kabir the incoming CJI.

Disgusting to say the least the way Congress manipulates the CBI,media & Judiciary. The only saving grace is the blog & young generation who have given resounding slaps to Congress in the recent elections.

  11. You can clearly see the bias especially NDTV. online commenter who haven't understood yet are the dumbest lot.

Check for instance, after UP election, Country's yuvraj and his family went in hibernation, so NDTV has nothing else to report as their main characters are missing in action. They are showing bought documentaries that have no relevance what soever. Plus their airtime is flooded with new ipad launches and all those useless crap.

ALso what amazes me is why BJP is not able to cash on so many issues floating around.

  22. Outcome of UP election is biggest slap on face of paid media. People do understand, even if they don't wear suits and speak good english like dalals of english media and they would show the AUKAAT to Congress in every election. I remember one gentleman from Noida asking panel on Times Now why it never questioned communal policies of Congress and stooge Arnab Goswami (he went to IIM, what a shame) just twisted the story to other insignificant part of question and ducked the key question. That was the day, i stopped watching any english news channel, they all are dalals, who can sell their own mother for some gains. And despite all hyped debates, people showed Congress its AUKAAT! The crooks of media had no words! Wait for a while, come 2017, BSP will be back in UP if SP don't perform. Congress is buried in UP forever and no power on earth can make it functional there, because people know that it is biggest bunch of thieves and thugs and compare to them, rest everyone is saint. When it is a question of denial of free speech, one finds our MSMs makes the most noise. Here again it is not all pervading but depends on the effected group and their affliations.Yet surprisingly these very media, be it newspapers or channel websites, insist on registration before readers can comment on any issues. Most of the times the reader comments are filtered to suit the political line pursued by the media in question. Is it not a feeling of paranoid that makes these media expect brickbats from the readers. Even on the Congress website one can see a warning not to post offensive contents. It is okay to filter out offensive content without mandatory registration of the user.

  27. The post is educative at its best. It exposes the hidden agenda behind the "lines in the print", and "the sounds in the TV" media. The layman will better distinguish b/n news and views, enriched by the awareness provided by blog-posts like these. It is not true that local media is immune to this disease. The disease is all pervasive. I have been an avid and faithful reader of "The Hindu" for the past 30 years, despite differing completely with its ideological and political leanings. The reason is "The Hindu"'s bias against "Right Wing Hindu Groups", and Pro-secular-left-liberal" is open and transparent. The quality of the Hindu's journalists(slanted they may be ideologically) is indeed very high. But elsewhere there is a steep fall in the quality of journalistic standards. AshutoshIBN(all round abysmal), and SmithaPrakash(casual, cultivated-ignorance?) are examples of the rot in standards. I am amazed that such mediocre quality can take them to top position in Journalism.

Thanks again for the excellent piece.

  28. Congratulations , I never knew that someone is there exposing Congress tricks . But you know , Congress shamelessly has not a single person to accept the truth .

EnDTV , TimesNow ,Headlines Today IBN 7 , CNN IBN these Channels needs to be investigated for the alleged link what we are saying . But actually the allegations are with firm ground .

You made right point for the forthcoming election in Gujarat . These people are partly blind towards the Hindus who suffered with Godhra Incidence .

We respect the duty of media to show the victims and help them get the justice . But that does not give them freedom to Run Kangaroo courts in the Studios . They start filing charges on their own , run the trial on their own with like minded people on the Dias , and amazingly they have the Judgement ready before the discussions began . As it is always seen on the topic of discussion and creating hype all day long with the ads on such topics .

Gujarat elections are nearing and these people will be back in business and in demand than ever . The thing is that they have no charm to sell their airtime unless they abuse Mr. Modi or BJP . They call on the people from Gujarat Congress to share the dias , who does not even know how to allege someone gracefully . Humbug allegations and rubbish mud throwing on Mr. Modi .Nothing else can be their topic .

Just look at the face of Shankersinh Vaghela , who was wiped out numerous times against BJP but with which source of spirit does he try to stand again and again to taint Gujarat Govt . Arjun Modhvadia , another face of the Gujarat congress , is just sick with Modi Fobia , nothing else . You can easily see him sick with walking in the Legislative house , creating walkouts for no reason . They think people are noticing them but they forget that people are not blind enough to remain ignorant of the real facts . Shaktisinh Gohil another case , same as above two , not much difference .

First of all they need to learn how to connect to people and make right connection at the right time from Mr. Modi . They even know that nothing is going to change much in coming days for Congress , so what is harm in throwing mud and trying to taint people from Gujarat Govt. I dont advocate Gujarat Govt. ,but do applaud for the eye catching work which Gujarat has never seen before .

Some one with medical background should surely suggest some good doctor to get these people relived from ModiFobia , so that they stop hammering the general public , in which they are indulged shamelessly .

  30. There is a HUGE education scam happening, the IIT JEE is being tampered with against the wishes of the Faculty, IIT senate, students both present and prospective, alumni and public. But none of the newspapers want to report the truth. They keep parroting what the HRD says. "This is being done to reduce stress and coaching" when in fact it is a clear case of the HRD having a tie up with the coaching institutes and with infosys and other it companies to conduct the online exam in 2014. NO newspaper or TV channel is willing to speak about this despite the students trying desperately. The media is indifferent and unfathomable. Even the great Hindu newspaper is very much in on this. The HRD is forcing this at short notice on students; they are removing engineering exams the CETs in regional language and simply DESTROYING the foundations. But no matter who the media is affiliated to they don’t care. It’s after all about education, not some interesting, scandalous and exciting stuff.
