Sack Sagarika

Dan Rather, an internationally acclaimed journalist, was the first to break the assassination of John F Kennedy. He also covered Watergate and many wars. In 2004 he ran a report about military records of George W Bush using documents which later turned out to be forged. Rather did the morally right thing, he quit CBS in 2006. His only fault was that he hadn’t fact-checked the story and the documents, although there is still no concrete evidence that the documents were unreliable. That was probably a rare mistake from Rather in career spanning over five decades. What does it say about journalists in India who continue to not only hold on to their jobs but continue to sermonise the nation as if their character were soaked in the purest of waters?

We first had Barkha Dutt, the Radiagate hero, stringing along a lobbyist and indulging in power-brokering who continues to moralise the nation. We now have Vir Sanghvi, another Radiagate hero, who now claims the tapes were doctored and he is innocent. This is the same brazenness with which politicians hang on to office despite being tainted with acts of corruption. If I have consistently maintained that a corrupt media is more dangerous to democracy than corrupt politicians then the media doesn’t stop providing more evidence to that belief.

Most Indian businesses are family-run and owned. But it is a common practice among many corporate entities to not employ two or more members from the same family, at least not in the same department. There is no particular reason behind this practice except for the belief that all the acts of the members may not be free from prejudice if they were from the same family. And what if your spouse also happens to be your boss in a news media enterprise? It then makes it all the more likely that sometimes even trash can be passed off as journalism. In all the posts on this site I have never once referred to Sagarika Ghose as the wife of Rajdeep Sardesai. I have always referred to her as the deputy editor. However, now I do believe the deputy editor must go. That any other Managing Editor in the seat of Rajdeep Sardesai would not tolerate the outright rubbish that Sagarika churns out so frequently. The latest one really has to be the last straw. That Rajdeep himself has a lot to answer for is another story.

Media is not a private body as the Editors Guild would have the Standing committee on Lokpal believe. The power to influence people, opinions and even elections is not in the private domain. There is a strange streak in Sagarika Ghose that leads her to believe that people are idiots and can be fooled all the time. That there are ordinary people and there are elites and she stands independently as an observer. Her boss should have repeatedly told her that she was part of the elite. On 9th November on her programme ‘Face the nation’ Sagarika ran the debate “Sri Sri on 4 day yatra in UP: should spiritual leaders take part in anti-corruption campaigns? FTN 10pm”. There were a few usual panellists along with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Except, SriSri wasn’t there!

First of all, the clear answer to SG’s question is anybody in this country is free to run a campaign against corruption at any place and at any time of his or her choice. Sagarika doesn’t have any moral business to question the rights of SriSri. This country’s values have been built on the spiritual cleanliness which outsiders find easier to recognise than people like Sagarika. The right question would now be: Does Sagarika have any moral right to continue as a journalist?

Sagarika Ghose conducted the debate as if SriSri were live on the programme and was responding to the comments made by other panellists. That wasn’t all, when panellists made a comment she even turned to SriSri to seek his response. What was being used was footage from a previously recorded interview with SriSri and suitably edited to make it appear as if he was responding live. This is nothing short of blatant mischief and fraud on the viewers. This is something CNN-IBN’s Cyrus Broacha does on his comedy show where the viewers are aware of the interviews being fake.

Some days back SG ran a debate on whether Justice Katju, the new PCI chairman, should apologise for calling journalists “uneducated”. I hope she now realises what exactly Katju was referring to. Not done with that, she frequently passes judgements on judges of High courts and Supreme Court some of which may actually be an act of contempt. In a recent article, ‘The Elite’s on trial, here is what she wrote:

The 2G trial too is one of India’s “million mutinies”. The overthrow of bail jurisprudence, the CBI’s failure to provide comprehensive evidence so far, the many weaknesses of the case beyond its rhetoric, have been highlighted by several legal experts. It is no longer even clear how much “loss” there was to the exchequer, with the CAG’s R1.76 lakh crore figure now being systematically questioned. Yet the 2G accused, before the trial, before proof of the money trail, appear to already have been declared guilty”. This not only reflects her terrible lack of understanding of the law but it also appears the article was written without a thorough scrutiny of the judgement by Judge O.P.Saini which denied bail to Kanimozhi and others. She probably implies that Indians simply want to hang the rich regardless of evidence or sense of justice.

I have said often that it’s not possible to hide in the tech-age. Faster than she could say SriSri people on Twitter quickly pointed out the recorded interview of SriSri being misused by Sagarika on her programme. She later tweeted that it was a bug and that FTN will carry a full apology to the viewers and to SriSri. I believe one can apologise for a mistake or an error. This was neither a mistake nor an error but wilful deception. The apology can pass but if Rajdeep Sardesai has any moral decency left in him he has to let his deputy editor go. Willingly perpetrating a fraud on the viewers is not a mistake that can be covered up by an apology. It is far too serious a crime. It is time for Rajdeep, the Managing Editor, to sack Sagarika

  2. I have almost stopped watching CNNIBN long ago because of the biased & bogey journalism ,specially pretty mediocre news analysis. No wonder I missed the program on Sri Sri yesterday but I'm not surprised.Hope we bring all to book, not only politicians but everyone in public life & the time has come for Sagarika..

  3. Shocking. I can never understand why does debate headlines are always loaded questions? I have never seen this anywhere in the world. It this a tacit admission that people would not watch the show unless there there is a provocative question in the title?

  4. Rajdeep Sardesai's wife Sagarika Ghosh has really committed a fraud by fooling the viewers and demeaning Sri Sri Ravi Shanker. This lady should be immediately sacked by CNN-IBN, if any shame is left in its owners !The Crooked in media are worse than politicians !

  6. Hi,

Want to say a lot but will restrain myself.

This I think shud sum up everything that CNN IBN & its team really are.

“It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime.” ~Thomas Paine, The Age of Reason

  8. After the excesses of the Emergency, nobody is willing to apply a code of ethics to journalism, just as no politician is willing to talk about birth control.Collection of a mass of well documented evidence, such as deliberate bias, paid news, carefully edited "interviews", fake SMS campaigns, over a period of time in order to proceed legally against the ELM is the only peaceful way at present.
TURDesai, Ghose, Burqa Dutt are at the forefront.
Arnav and Navika could not find any questions worth asking Praful Patel after the CAG revealed the Air India mess. Patel kept smiling throughout the program: ignorance, deliberate obfuscation or complicity?
Just yesterday, an RTI application unearthed the CAG's pointed reply to the PM's misinformation/obfuscation on the 2G case.

  9. I used to visit ibnlive often before. I used to like the layout. But the way they censor any anti-cong, or comments critical of op-eds was just too much. Stopped totally. They call it 'moderation' though! It was amply clear after Dr. Swamy's interview with karan thapar. The same video on Youtube (though Ibn's channel on YT) had so many more appreciative comments ratio than on ibnlive.

You should write on that topic sometime. Tehelka is worse. There is no option to comment! That's the elitist, anachronistic thinking of the 1800s where its their belief they know better and there is nothing of value for them to listen from the 'peasants.'

TOI is better in that sense. Most comments
    do appear.

Not Surprising the mindset doesn't change when they move to a 2-way channel such as twitter and all they do is blare what they did on TV. No wonder Bdutt wants to find out from Nikesh how to deal with trolls on the net. How dare others do what I do to them? Damn, I thought I was the only one with a mike, now everyone on twitter has one!

I remember Noam Chomsky saying on the media' its not the constant barrage of entertainment and frivolity but what actually passes for serious programming that bothers me'

All of these guys pounced on Katju in the name of freedom of the press and justifying that they are giving the trash that the consumer wants. I'm still fine with that. They are a business after all. Talk about kareena if that gets you the ratings and cricket if you want the viewership. But when it comes to serious topics, be fair and well read (and don't take bribe or tell lies). Is that too much to ask? Apparently yes.

Edward Bernays (father of propaganda and PR) said way back in the 1920s, rehashing his uncle Freud's ideas, how there was a need to 'herd the cattle' which when left to itself will choose wrongly and its the elite's responsibility to 'guide' in a democracy. The only mistake in his theory was the elites don't have the welfare of the masses as their priority.

  13. I had being long time critics for CNNIBN http://vikashkumarroy.blogspot.com/2008/08/cnn-ibn-sucks.html . Their insensitivity towards sentiments of people of India had been proved time and again. Media house like CNNIBN are controlled by western forces and funded by Saudis. People like Rajdeep /Barkha/Sagarika has given dharma of Journalism. Use media to make some fast bucks and innocent people of India failed to understand this. These media house should be bring under governing body or else they are like “Bull on street” , what ever they want to do they do. I used to think of CNN-IBN as an honest news channel and I actually used to admire Rajdeep Sardesai and Sagarika Ghose. But of late I've been doing some research to find out more about Ms.Ghose and I've come accross some really biased tweets of her's and I had also watched FTN yesterday and excerpts from Sri Sri's interview were being shown as answers to the panelists' questions. What's more, Ms.Ghose was even asking Sri Sri to answer those questions. This can hardly be a mistake.Surely, as the Deputy Editor of her channel,Ms.Ghose must be aware of Sri Sri's interview by her channel.Does Ms.Ghose intend to insult our intelligence?
Ms.Ghose has made many such 'mistakes' in the past and has even issued 'apologies' for them. She and Mr.Sardesai have let me down very badly, they've breached the trust I had in them.Such incidents are very saddening and they leave you confused and wondering whom to trust in this country.
But I beg to differ with the author on one point : Not every Editor in place of Mr.Sardesai would have sacked a journalist like Ms.Ghose.Prannoy Roy didn't sack Ms.Dutt.
I plan to become a journalist myself and an HONEST one.I don't appreciate the attitude of powerful and influential people who believe that ordinary citizens can be taken for a ride.

  37. The new way of creating slants in media debates in not by advocating a point of view yourself. That makes it too obvious for the channels to be exposed. What the Karans and the Nidhi's do is that they create a slant by manipulating the type of people they invite on their shows. If you invite Vinod Gupta, Padgaonkar and Kumar Ketkar on a debate on Team Anna, you pretty much know what the debate is trying to achieve. They don't even invite Congress spokespersons sometimes - their stooges take care of all their political positions by cloaking themselves under the garb of "independent journalists".

  38. this is proof of how corrupt and depraved the media and journalists are. what a shame, I think there should be laws to even tackle the corruption of media. freedom of press does not mean freedom to show what suits their interest or what is their will. freedom of expression exists as an extention of freedom of speech. if people have to exercise freedom of speech they need true information. therefore press given "freedom of press" but when press is misguiding and deceiving people by showing false and baseless allegations, they have to be given strictest punishment. what a shame, shame

On 20th January, 1998 Central Bureau of Investigation filed cases against New Delhi Television (NDTV) managing director Prannoy Roy, former Director General of Doordarshan R Basu and five other top officials of Doordarshan under Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) for criminal conspiracy and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the CBI charge-sheet, Doordarshan suffered a loss of over Rs 3.52 crore due to the “undue favours” shown to NDTV as its programme The World This Week (TWTW) was put in `A’ category instead of `special A’ category.

  69. There should be one "eHonesty" group or site to nail all these culprits down in the larger interest of society and India! What do you think about it? Just commenting and leaving or forgetting the issue won't solve the problem itself. Let's dig out some robust solutions from common citizen's perspective and action pool!! :-)

  73. It brings to fore the doubts that common people harbour for media!! To absolve themselve the Media should as a whole condemn CNN IBN for this!! Let common people know that the media who keeps all Public Figures under microscope also keeps the same focused on their own and would not hesitate to 'punish' the errants and what better punishment then debating the same in an open Fora!! Do others have guts to do it.. debate it live.. NDTV, Aaj Tak, Times Now...any one... dont think any one will after all People living in glass houses....!!!

A lawsuit of criminal defamation and character assassination should be filed against her.
This would act as a deterrant against any such news in then future..
    Shame on you Sagarika

  75. This is a usual practise in most channels, at least in Kerala where politians appear on different channels (in panel discussions) at the same time and all of them carry the LIVE super. Actually its difficult to make out which one is live, which is deferred and which is recorded. Viewers are being tricked most of the time during these useless discussions.

    ReplyDelete
  76. CNN IBN is one news channel I always choose to avoid, and after reading this, my reason is more than justified. This channel is by far the most biased(pro-Congress) and most mediocre of the lot. And Sagarika is anything but a loud gibberish uttering journalist.

  77. ON 21/12/2012 [DOOMSDAY] ALL THESE CHANNELS SHOULD SUBMERGE IN THE DELUGE. ONLY HONEST COMMON PEOPLE SHOULD SURVIVE!!!!!!!

  79. Whole heartedly agree with this piece. Indian media houses need to be cleaned from the top. Sagarika should be sacked without any delay.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sagarika is a nitwit who thinks she can get away with anything since her husband heads the channel she works for. Although media twist and spin news, edit out anti-Congress and pro-Hindutva comments, when a recorded interview is used along with a live debates, anchors have so far had the courtesy to mention it. Sri Sri and AOL should sue CNN-IBN for fraudulent reporting. A clear case of lies by omission if ever there was one.

...recorded interviews are known as sim-sats and they are used in panel discussions with full disclosure to the participant. My show is a late night programme, it comes on at 10pm at night, and often panelists who are in far flung locations cannot make it at the time. Sri Sri was travelling in UP and it was logistically impossible for him to come to our studio at 10pm. However he had no objection to being in the discussion. Thus we recorded his views, obtained his consent on being on a panel (which was done) and asked the same questions as were asked in the recording. Thats all there is to it. <<

    A clarification.

  84. NDTV CEO Prannoy Roy is co-brother of Prakash Karat, General Secretary of the Communist party of India . His wife and Brinda Karat are sisters.
    CNN-IBN:
This is 100 percent funded by Southern Baptist Church with its branches in all over the world with HQ in US. The Church annually allocates $800 million for promotion of its channel. Its Indian head is Rajdeep Sardesai and his wife SagarikaGhosh.

  85. Good article. The journalists in India are living on sensationalism and character assassination of those who do not agree of their views. Take any news channel and you see the same people debating every topic as if they are the experts in the whole world and in know of everything. Its time for all these church/missionary educated journalists are thrown to bins. I wonder who gives these people awards... get those b******s first.

  86. Hi, Anonymous,

Please go cool man. I received threats for being aggressive. This country is no more democratic. If it can authorise a pistol in every individual's hand to shoot that public servant who is above his height in terms of his attitudue to social obligations, I mean I include the gutter mouths who have no love for this country. The pistols will abeg for bullets.

Please be careful as otrherwise you will get stuck into jams from which you may find it difficult to get out. My heart burns when i say this. It is my experience. I curse myself for having taken my birth in this punnya bhoomi.

    What Arobindo says on this?

  87. You can do better than either asking for a ban of CNN-IBN or stopping watching it. It's a free country, and people can lie if they wish. What you CAN DO, is to stop buying any products or services that are advertised on these channels. Advertising is their primary source of income and when advertisers stop advertising because of people boycotting their products, the TV channels will come to heel. Boycotting is the best, most democratic and most effective way to fight media nonsense.

  89. Our media is behaving as if they are Congress or ruling dispensation's workers. Apart from much talked about stories I would like to bring more shocking facts: (1)All the recent exposures of BIG corruption are not at the behest of media or Govt's agencies but at the behest of Judiciary led by Chief Justice Kapadia and Comptroller and Auditor General of India Shri Vinod Rai. I haven't found any debate on this very important topic in print or electronic media.(2)Recent cancellation of Smt Sonia Gandhi's inauguration ceremony in Uttarakhand was questioning of her authority by Chief Minister BC Khanduri.(3)Big political cheats who are cooling their heels in Tihar have not till date accepted their loot and co-operated with prosecution. Even this BIG discussion point is yet to find mention in our media.(4)The high profile jail mates like Amar Singh and Hasan Ali who are knowing every thing about large loot have not opened their mouths till date and it is clear that they have not acted alone. But our media has not discussed them.(5)Regular visits to tax heaven nations of all the political parties higher echelons without mandatory security checks at our Airports has been completely blacked out by our fourth estate of democracy.(6)Collusive nature of political class like facilitating each other's kith and kin to win elections by fielding weak candidates from say Amethi or Gandhinagar or many many numerous parliamentary and state legislature nominations has not been discussed by the business men in the guise of media persons.

  100. Dear author,
There is no room for fiction. There is an adage I found in a tapestry in my friend's house reading " I am the boss in my house and I have my wife's permission to say so" But it is imperative to add that the media in India has become next scoundrels to our politicians

  101. Any sensible Indian watching our English news on TV would see through the jokers that our anchors are. On top of the list: Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose, Barkha Dutt, Vir Sanghvi...all of them share the same characteristics: they all love to hear their own voice, have a shallow understanding of most subjects, liberally use of value judgments and pop-psychology, and pack their so-called "panels" with people who are as ego-centric as themselves and without a shred of self-respect while spouting opinions in the garb of experts. I don't know who watches these people - I certainly don't.

    ReplyDelete
  102. you write what I feel about the topics. So, kudos to you.
Arnab Goswami is no exception. He & Rajdeep seem so immature that they don't want to listen to what they really don't agree to. Impulsive, immature, manner-less way of conducting debates with same few speakers is annoying & painfully ridiculous. They should learn a bit from international presenters. But there morals are corrupt so why would they care. In the list of most corrupt professions after Politicians, Bureaucrats, Police feature the Journos. God help India from such crooks.

  103. Just to add about CNN-IBN. They were carrying false stories against Western Union Money Transfer. Headlines with typical ? mark at the end. They were forcing for a sponsorship deal with them as they had sponsored a NDTV program. When Western Union decided finally to sponsor their program rather than get false & negative publicity, they stopped airing that story. This was told to me by one of my friend who was the Director at that time in WU. Shame on you Rajdeep & Sagorika. You guys have no morals. Disgusting couple.

Both her and her F%^$ husband do not deserve to be called journalists most of the time.... they just love to create sensational news... whether fact or fiction - they give a damn... she is definitely worser than him and not sure where her brains are usually parked, maybe at the basement along with her car... since it definitely does not go with her to the studio when she is reporting!!
