Why Indian MSM Wants Social Media Dead

In recent times Herman Cain, an Afro-American candidate, pulled out of the race for the Republican party’s nomination for US Presidential election in 2012. Three women from his past had alleged sexual harassment by Cain which eventually forced him to abort his campaign. In contrast, Abhishek Manu Singhvi (AMS), MP and Congress spokesman, resigned on April 23 from various posts after his alleged sexual adventures were leaked through a video on the internet. That was enough for the Mainstream Media (MSM) and even PCI Chairman, Justice Katju, to start screaming for controls over the social media. The sex CD which involves AMS and a female lawyer was reportedly made by AMS’s driver and according to AMS was “fake, doctored and morphed”. How a driver went to Darbangha (Bihar) and found enough money and support and morphed a tape will remain a technological wonder for a long time. His alleged motives are “dog-bites and low pay”. Seriously, many of us may complain about our salaries but going to the extent of morphing our bosses into sex videos is taking even revenge too far. Tsk, never mind!

The case was brought to public light not by the driver or by the MSM or by the social media. It came to prominence when AMS filed a police complaint against the driver and got an injunction from the Delhi HC against airing of the CD. On what basis the HC gave the injunction is another mystery and it almost sounds like pre-screening. Naturally, people wanted to know what was on the CD and what the facts were. This is where the MSM failed as it completely blacked-out the story. The court had stayed airing of the CD and not the reporting of the story. It was then that the story spread like wildfire on Twitter, Facebook and other social media and finally parts of the CD were uploaded by some on the internet.

In response to the public clamour for the story Rajdeep Sardesai even responded by calling them “Eternal Voyeurs”. Such is his disdain for ordinary people. Rajdeep also asked why the Opposition was silent over the issue, as if they, or any political voice, should determine what the press or media should be reporting and discussing. A dead give-away.

Even so, when the cookie finally crumbled, the MSM wasn’t discussing the AMS sex incident, they were busy debating whether ‘Internet is above the courts’ (For uploading the CD against the court injunction) and some like Justice Katju and Sagarika Ghose were discussing ways and means to ‘check’ the social media.

Nothing would please our MSM (and some politicians) more than to see the death of social media. It has come to challenge their monopoly, their bias, their spins, their lies, and their selective reporting. In the US the Internet media has seen the death of many newspapers and quite a few TV channels. Some 300 newspapers have died in a small country like UK. Unlike print and TV, social media requires the regular MSM and public figures to be interacting with people sensibly which is where they have failed in India. Public opinions can be suppressed in newspapers and TV but not on the social media. So while raging against the people on the social network and wanting to desperately ‘check’ them the Indian media really needs to understand the way social media works and harness it productively and profitably. Comments under the post “Media as cover-up artist for Seedy Singhvi” will reveal how even keen news-watchers were totally unaware of the AMS incident. That is how successfully the MSM blacked-out the story.

The Internet wasn’t created in India. The Internet didn’t evolve in India. None of the major social media engines were created in India. For all its other problems the US still remains a country with absolute freedom of speech. President, Pope and even religion are no exceptions to such freedoms. Books are not banned and books can be burned. Nazi group marches through Jewish localities to offend them is allowed. Protests at funerals against dead ‘gay’ soldiers, in bad taste, are allowed. Bad taste is not a crime. Therefore, for Internet and social media to thrive in the US environment wasn’t as big a challenge as it is in India. Mind you, the same laws that punish defamation or illegal activities otherwise also apply to social media in the US. It does in India too. It is just that in India free-speech is largely reserved for the powerful and the MSM. Now that the situation is changing it’s causing unease among many in the media and politics. US citizens over many years have grown used to and cherished their freedom of speech. Most of them know what to believe and what to ignore. The Indian govt and media simply doesn’t trust ordinary people to have the good judgement over issues.

If the AMS CD was uploaded on the net it was because the media didn’t discuss it. It got uploaded because people generally believed that this level of gagging by a court and black-out by MSM can only mean there is truth in the story. That a prominent lawyer like AMS would seek an injunction and instead of continuing the FIR against the alleged conspirator reach a settlement with him further reinforces the belief that the CD is neither morphed nor doctored. Apart from the frivolous discussion; “Is Internet above courts” on CNN-IBN (who else but Sagarika Ghose?) and other channels, NDTV even discussed if ‘India is going the US way’ on the media issue. Among participants on NDTV was Shoma Chaudhury, editor of Tehelka, a near-gossip tabloid, and the same tabloid that famously used call girls to do their jobs. That is enough said for morality in media.

If there is evil in the social media, it is prevalent elsewhere too, particularly in the MSM and politics. It is how we respond to it that counts. It is not easy for someone to survive in the social network by constantly peddling lies and misleading information. In Indian media it is definitely possible and sometimes it even seems they are paid for it. For those screaming about morals so much in the MSM there is an example of a prominent journalist Keith Olberman who was suspended from his channel, MSNBC, for a small but undeclared donation he made to politicians. In contrast people like Barkha Dutt are celebrated in our media despite established wrong-doings. In the US Barkha Dutt would have been permanently trashed and out of the media for good. So people like Rajdeep Sardesai would do well not to sermonise on morality, which he often does. The likes of Shoma Chaudhary, Sonia Singh (NDTV), Sagarika Ghose should also be frequently reminded of the sordid NOTW affair in UK. That tabloid is what much of Indian MSM should be compared to and not values of ‘Freedom of speech’.

In the last US presidential election Youtube was successfully used by CNN to allow ordinary people to put questions to the candidates and have them debate the issues. Many other clips from Youtube are also used by US news channels in their reports. Why Indian media cannot find productive use for social media other than promoting egos of individual journalists is simply the fear of sharing their turf. Forget harnessing social media productively, the frequency with which our news channels twist and manipulate tweets to suit their agenda actually amounts to abuse of social media by them.

The MSM perceives a loss to the social media on the issue of AMS, his sexcapade and his final resignation. This is hardly the truth. Social media did not bring AMS down. In the final scene of the movie ‘All the President’s men’ WaPo editor Ben Bradley chides Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein thus: “You know the results of the latest Gallup Poll? Half the country never even heard of the word Watergate. Nobody gives a shit”. That’s right half the US didn’t know and didn’t give a shit till Nixon finally resigned. That was despite tremendous coverage by the Washington Post and a few more newspapers. Here we are, an entire MSM blacking out the AMS story and they want the world to believe it is the evil of social media that has to be ‘checked.

Social media didn’t bring AMS down. He brought himself down with his dirty deeds, social media just showed the courage that MSM did not just as Woodward and Bernstein didn’t bring down Nixon on their own. MSM, and Justice Katju, would do well to partner social media rather than try to check it. If ever ‘Power to the people’ made sense in a democracy it is Social Media. Celebrate it!

  1. You hit the nail on the head with this yet another amazing blog. The MSM is making out as if deed was saintly but Tweeples exposing it was a crime. "Internet about Courts" asks the bimbo Sagarika (only she can come up with such show..and get away). Yes indeed! She is grudging the space that SM took over that legitimately should have been occupied by MSM. That they did not do and SM preceded MSM(that too after patiently waiting for a day for MSM to do its job)Don't blame Social Media for your failures - MSM Internet is not above court - but definitely above illegal courtships in the court chambers. And Courts hurried injunction did its repute no good either.
This response of MSM indeed reflects the paranoia hidden in MSM. From Pamphlets/Flyers, to Print Media to Radio to Television to Neo Media - the natural and inevitable progression towards evolution. Accept it or your are doomed. Competition for TV news channels is not another TV news Channels, it is going to be Social Media. Gear up or Wear out.

Thanks Ravinar! For this lovely analysis.

  3. After years of being fawned upon, watching people hang on to their every word many of these so-called journalists genuinely believe that they know what is best for the rest of us.

They have no doubt that what their view of reality, perverted by their own prejudices, their organisation's prejudices, commercial affiliations and advertiser money is the one true, just and honest view of the world.

They also believe that they have the intelligence, ability and are entitled to control what we do or do not see. So while there should be no controls on the media and their (mostly bought) reportage, the social media, driven by the people who were a captive audience of these attention seekers, should be controlled.

This certainly does remind me of big monopoly businesses fighting to control the next big thing they see as a threat to their existence through legislation. This bunch are no different. Their monopoly on the flow of information is crumbling fast.

  11. Well done mate. It is an excellent composition of facts.

Yes, Main Stream Media does have a spot of bother to address now with the successful advent of the so called **social media**. The rapid flourish of this social media was thanks to the inefficient and canard news breaking by the so called main stream media houses, both in the visual and print media. When public were deprived off genuine facts and instead fed with predetermined and prescripted trash, they found alternatives and nothing was as successful as was Twitter and Facebook.

Main Stream Media is already beginning to recognize the muscle of social media and certainly reacting to it with a pinch of salt. There will perhaps emerge a sense of accountability within the main stream media which was hitherto absent.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi issue was perhaps the first sort of direct confrontation social media encountered and won against both the main stream media and judiciary which opted to look the other way. Yes, main stream media has become redundant, and considering their current parochial behavior, it is a much appreciated victory of social media.

Kudos to you for this wonderful blog and to Social Media!

  14. Simple Logic!! if it was fake and morphed. ANd he know who morphed it. who blackmailed him.

Why is there a settlement instead of indictment of the driver.

Why was any opposition so silent about it!! Thats very interesting too. A very idea that our Country has no solid opposition (in a democracy) is very heart chilling.

  15. "If ever ‘Power to the people’ made sense in a democracy it is Social Media. Celebrate it!" The monopoly of MSM has been challenged and this is why they are behaving in this fashion. It is a common practice in Indian families where children are taught to listen and agree to what the fathers and grandfathers teach. It works well within the familial structure, but somewhere, MSM began to lose touch with the true nature of their job and became the un-appointed father of information control in society. So, as awareness is increasing among public, the MSM is trying to hold the slipping grounds beneath their feet. It will take a long time before Indian MSM is anyways like US or UK, but it will reach there slowly.

You are definitively well researched & keep a hawk eye on all of MSM.
However I was wondering, have you ever come across a story well done/covered without bias by anybody in MSM in comparison to say their peers ?

I know it may be against the essence of your blog, but I believe you will not shy away from giving credit where its due...just wanted to know if there are any scrupulous journalists in today's MSM scene.

  18. Sardard-esai called Social Media as ' eternal voyeurs' disgusting it is. And what would his channel and NDTV do when there is a Nityananda's CD or some BJP's Member's CD? or better still what would he do to air NaMo's CD if he gets one? I am sure there is none otherwise He would have fought tooth&nails to screen it 24x7. Complete hypocrisy I say this is. When there is a court judgement going against Media Paymasters, they run the show and get panelists to twist it as a case of Judicial overreach. Just because the CD was that of a Congi, these Bleeding hearts, the social media's only crime was to expose the CD to light and bring down a Congi. Dr.S.Swamy who is fighting all the cases in courts has never been treated the way he should have been treated even though he fights legendary cases. This is the respect that MSM has for people who fight in courts and then the MSM overlooks and asks 'Is Internet above Courts'.

  25. You rightly say that The Internet wasn’t created in India. The Internet didn’t evolve in India. None of the major social media engines were created in India.

Yes, but the Internet can be destroyed or atleast partly damaged by India. When the rights of anybody anywhere is compromised or denied, justice is in peril everywhere. India as the aspiring global cop of cyberspace is on its way to become a global bully if it does not understand this.

India can well bully its own citizens into submission and even stitch up their social media voices, but the pity is that India is even allowing itself to be used as a platform for shutting down websites related to matters that are outside India. This is the concept of "libel tourism". For example, 'techgoss' had reported on attempts by some Indian subsidiaries (by the way, assisted by AMS's son's law firm in Delhi) to use Indian IT Act provisions to injunct Google from publishing certain websites operated from Singapore and Malaysia. The subsidiary is acting in India on behalf of their parent organization abroad, and seeking a global blackout. Just think of the implications if such a case were to succeed. Would India want to be in the business of curtailing the freedoms and rights enjoyed by others in freer countries ? Google for their own commercial reasons is likely to put up a spirited defense in that case and other similar ones, but where is the guardian of such freedoms in India ? There is none.

Social media can't even throw a stone, and that is its limitation if I may say so, and its blessing in disguise. It does not amplify one voice to the exclusion of others. India doesn't seem to understand this part. Certainly Mr Katju of the Press Council doesn't. He is thinking conventional media and using the word social media. The legislators seem to be a backward lot too. They will keep India backward, for sure.

Their has been prior attempts by the Congress party to somehow control the Social Media after the Anna Fiasco & Ramdev disaster episodes. The political parties & Congress in particular have become weary of the power of Social Media but is unable to find a way to tame this revolution of free thinking & thought sharing. The AMS episode has put a hard slap on the faces of Political parties & their Media partners who have continuously played the game of manufacturing perceptions in minds of viewers/readers & then abusing those perceptions to suite their political masters.

  30. The reported incident should be discussed in public domain as the matter is serious because;

    1) If CD is morphed than; FIR should be registered and the person who made the CD should be prosecuted and punished. It do not go down well to the image of Mr abhishek and even court to let off that person so easily and have out of the court settlement. This will encourage these type of element who tarnish people image by blackmailing them.

    2) If CD is genuine then the thing which should be investigated is Whether favor are exchanged to secure seat in Temple of Justice ( High court, SC)??.....Are the people at the top of political power influences the appointment of Judges???.......It is a very serious matter which literally shakes the very foundation of Indian constitution and Judicial system.

  34. Ravinarji, you are spot on. I watched that discussion on CNN-IBN and it was just rubbish. Katju spoke total nonsense. He used words like harmful, dangerous etc. Who decides what is harmul and what is not for public consumption? He did not elaborate or define these, no explanation, nothing. At his level and position, he should be bold enough to give examples and references. He has no guts. And remember, he ran away from the social media after just a few days - from facing people and chose to sit in the air-conditioned studios and air his opinion. Shame! He must restrict himself and his sermons for the MSM and not bring it to us.

And SG put up a drama as to how the MSM followed the rules of the court and did not show CD. A Drama Queen she is!

MSM actions and selective reporting shows clearly that they are mouthpieces of the corrupt in this country. It is a shame these journalists are all celebrities because they are crooks and not known for speaking and exposing truth.

Thanks Sir for this piece, keep educating people!

Its not in Indian gene to be fair. No matter how high the posts of these people are, how celebral they are in their own right, their minds are not clean. Because they are getting paid to say the truth - they only want to say truth when getting paid and not otherwise. In other words, they dont want to say the truth if they are not getting paid.

  36. I agree that the MSM is threatened by the rise and "popularity" of social media, but both them and most of us "techno-optimists" are falling prey to the same fallacy -- the social media is not as ubiquitous are we're making it out to be. The social media, at the end of the day, does not have the ability to amplify messages the way the mass media does.

I think in Singhvi's case social media has been a boon to the MSM, they can now talk about (and capitalize on) a scandal that would have gone unreported had some murmurs not been heard online. Now their interviews and panels with out of touch, irrelevant (to the topic) people has created a nice cycle for them to keep the social media involved (hey, mad people will post shiz on the twitters and the facebooks, even those living under the metaphorical rock with come out and talk about it. I surely did!)so they're simultaneously creating an audience AND getting more material to work it.

The way I see it, it's a win-win for the MSM. They need to stop feeling scared of the sosial media and start embracing it...not seriously, but surely like CNN which spends half of its airtime reading Tweets offa the internet.

All those who want to control and moderate social media seem to be afraid of the feeling that they may be stripped naked on social media someday and that's why the debate to hoodwink the indian public. Those who don't have to hide, they don't have to fear. Katju seemed to be more concerned with his argument that "what if some woman's character is tarnished online".

"What if tomorrow someone makes a blog, lists all of my judgments and then comments on the judgments?. I cant let that happen"....must be running through his mind.

  40. Good Article with sense, logic & facts.
Those who are running Electronic media (TV) definitely have reasons to worry about the rising of Social media.
these people of TV media has seen how they themselves grown up over the years since the launch of Satellite channels, how they break the monopoly & market of Print media, how they become rich, celebrity news readers, celebrity anchors, droving in to luxury cars, getting Stocks in the channels as a pay package all such things which were not available to those worked in print media for many decades.

Now with the rise of Social media their monopoly is now challenged in providing & sharing the News/Information (of course as per their likes/dislikes)with the masses. No longer they have complete control & monopoly over the Information so they can not control the flow as per their convenience & benefits. This is really scary.
Their Promoters, Investors, these corporate houses have all the reasons to get worried because of this new competition. ultimately this will affect their Profits (money), this will affect their bargaining power which they could use with the willing parties in exchange of some business favors.

It was fine if TV media dominated Print media, after all both the media could be controlled by the same set of promoters, Corporate houses but what about this Social media? How they will control it? anybody can join some social sites & can share the Information, anybody can open a blog site & share the information & add to that these social sites are created Outside India, Developed by Outside India, Hosted & managed by Outside India
& so How these corporate houses, promoters are supposed to control it? This is really scary. This is really worrying factor for not just Media houses but for Political parties/Political leaders also.

Regarding Mr. Katju, i will say that after Mr. Digvijay Singh i look up to him for regular & exciting quotes.

  42. Ravi - Great work as usual. Pointed observations and remarks to puncture MSM self-righteousness balloon.

Congres has had the penchant for stalling or quashing anything against them, specially wrt to their first family. MSM is operating as their extended arms only. Now with Bofors ghost out again, we see MSM equating both Congress and BJP of doing nothing conveniently forgetting that since 1985-86 it was non Congress or non-Congress supported governments for only 7.5years and that too non-continuous.

Anyone who reads social media has the understanding to accept or reject the views on it. This episode of social media w.r.t AMS case reminds me of movie Damini where nearing climax the powerful get worried when Damini starts winning public support.

Much in the same way, MSM (also read Congress & ruling Junta with mindset of Mai Baap Sarkaar) is worried as Aam Janta is finding voice on social media.

Keep up the good work and let us all spread the good word.
