Separate Laws For Celebs Please

Billy Hayes is an American writer and actor. But there is more to him than that. Hayes was arrested in 1970 at Istanbul airport for smuggling 2kgs of Hashish. This was a time when many countries in the world didn’t even have ‘Anti-Drug’ laws. Hayes was sentenced to four years in prison for cooperating with the authorities in nabbing the original supplier. But the law doesn’t work honestly in some places. Before he knew what was happening Hayes was told he was sentenced to life, which is 30 years in prison. He was tortured frequently in prison. Hayes finally escaped from the prison in 1975 to Greece and returned home to his family in the US a few months later. This extraordinary story is captured in the movie Midnight Express. His story and the movie got Turkey bad publicity throughout the world for their poor justice and prison systems.

Closer home, Sanjay Dutt was a known drug addict. He must have surely been in possession of drugs to be consuming drugs. Yet, to my knowledge, there hasn’t ever been a single case ever filed against him for drugs. His father packed him off to the US for rehabilitation programme which seemed to have worked and set Sanjay back on the road to his career and family. There are other drug offenders who have been let off too. So when the Supreme Court upheld the conviction of Sanjay Dutt in the shadow of the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of arms it wasn’t surprising that most of his clan sympathised with him. Let me correct that. They went beyond sympathy, most of them were declaring him “innocent”. From Jaya Prada to Mahesh Bhatt to many others, they were all narrating how Dutt has suffered for 20 years. This included his own lawyers and others like Majid Memon who claimed he had just made a “foolish mistake” and the SC should have been lenient.

Bollywood members describe SD as a “clean boy, kind soul, a good Samaritan”. Nice! And that he had acquired an illegal weapon just for self-defence. This is where the lies start. Acquiring assault weapons, hand grenades, a large amount of cartridges, helping store the arms, then destroying some of the weapons aren’t exactly deeds of a kind soul. Are they? And what were Sanjay’s own reasons for all of this? In his own words: “Because I have Muslim blood in my veins.I could not bear what was happening in the city”. That does seem like he was acting in preparation of self-defence, wasn’t he? And once again the foolish logic by the Bollywood mafia is that a lot of money is riding on his movies, these movies generate a lot of employment, hundreds of lives at stake and so on. All emotionally appealing but sheer nonsense! The undeniable fact is SD not only stored a cache of weapons enough for a small battle but was frequently hobnobbing with terrorists and the underworld. There have been taped conversations of his with the criminals available in public domain.

What should really worry us is that Sanjay Dutt may just be the tip of an iceberg in Bollywood. It is no secret that the underworld finances Bollywood heavily. Sometime back when CNN-IBN carried out a sting operation exposing black money in Bollywood people actually laughed. They laughed because it didn’t need a sting operation to know underworld money and black-money is the lifeline of Bollywood. Nobody needed a sting to be convinced. Here’s a small report about events in 2003 on Preity Zinta from ZeeNews that should stun any normal person:

Hmm! Thirteen other celebrities including Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan retracted their statements in the case. Sanjay Dutt is not a child who was playing with a toy. He was playing with a lot more than just a gun. He is just unfortunate to have been caught. The sympathy from Bollywood is so overwhelming because everyone who sympathised with SD was sometime or the other probably connected with criminals or their funds in some way. Maybe they too have misdeeds that haven’t come out in the open. One has to be a nutcase to believe Mahesh Bhatt’s son Rahul Bhatt met David Headley at some informal meeting. If the ways of terrorists are any guide, they are smart enough to pick their “Bakras” very carefully. David Headley too would have picked Rahul Bhatt with some thoughtfulness.

The media morons are upset too. Naturally! One of their “sales-boys” may be packed off for a few years. When he returns he may not be saleable anymore. Wise-up crooks! There’s another one in line who may end up with a similar fate. Salman Khan, who is now being called a great-hearted, kind, friendly, children-caring man may head the same way. I believe Salman Khan is all of that except when he shoots black bucks or runs over people on the footpath after a few drinks. If Salman is smart he would learn a lesson and speed up hearing of his cases and not dodge summons. Sanjay Dutt is returning to prison at 53. He would have been smarter in finishing a major part of his sentence while he was younger instead of frequently seeking bails and hoping he will escape. He might have even been granted parole. Salman Khan has been dodging the law with bail, disappearing when summons are served and evading the prosecution of his case. It may be painful for him too if he is finally unable to escape when he is 55. That would be most certain to end his career.

It’s not just Bollywood but quite a good section of the MSM that may be thriving on mafia money. Oh by the way, nobody is seeking any action or investigation against those media celebs and activists who splurged on anti-India campaigner Ghulam Nabi Fai. In January I wrote why “Media Loves Criminals, Makes Crime Attractive”. The media encourages convicted criminals like Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan and gets a whole generation to believe the law is a frivolous thing that can be broken and escape is possible. The stunts of actors who get away could even be inspiration for major crimes like armed robbery and even rape and murder. What Bollywood and our MSM are telling us simply is that they need a separate law for themselves. They want that their crimes should be overlooked because of the huge money implications of their business or stardom. Sanjay Dutt is only unfortunate that thousands of people like him in Bollywood, Media and Politics have gotten away and he paid a price.

Billy Hayes suffered enormously in an alien land with poor justice systems. What started as a four year sentence turned into 30. His escape from that prison is justified and admirable. Sanjay Dutt, on the other hand, is lucky. The SC knocked off a year from his original sentence of 6 years. Maybe the govt will now consider a separate law for celebrities to avoid “victimhood” and “criminals turned kind-souls”.

  1. Dear Mr Ravi,
This is a very hard hitting, on-the-mark article that exposes the Fai-friendly Bollywood thugs like Mahesh Bhatt.
Wish these crooks woke up and thought about country rather than their own wrong earned livelihood.

  2. I expected a little more balanced observation from Media Crooks. At the very begining the names of Jayaprada,Mahesh Bhatt and Majid Memon have been blatently exposed for the undeserving sympathies expressed. How on earth you missed out Ram Jethmalani who was shamelessly admitting on the media that he has a soft corner for the this criminal and it pains him to see the turn of events. This is a costly error by MC in the eyes of those who view ur analysis under a microscope.

    1. Absurd. That of hundreds of names that commented on the issue you think of Ram Jethmalani is a reflection on you rather than the writer of the article. You appear to be one who is bent on a Hindu-Muslim balance without saying so. Sanjay Dutt himself is a good Hindu-Muslim balance if that is what you are covertly seeking.

katju and other cultural crass(includes bjps delhi gang too) does not fall into this category.

    4. Dear Anand your intentions are not doubtable but I think the fact that on HIS blog he has given you space to publish what Jethmalani said ends the debate and closes your own point. And please update your self on the meaning of 'blatant expose', what Jaya and Mahesh B said is already in public domain. Wise men should always think twice before they say something.

  4. Ravinar,

May be it was too early to write this post as no post is complete without the mention of our great learned living Shakespeare, the living legend Chief Justice of World, the one and only Justice Markendey Katju. That guy played some garbage value today by saying that he shall be given mercy because he is unable to get loans. Please write something on it too.

Also I would like to have your views on this sudden nonsense of Italy having change of heart (may be due to new pope - The holy see) that they are sending the marines back. Now our darling of media Mr. Salve who on one hands portrays to be with common man and on other defends Italian interest, will he take up case back?? I would be surprised if he doesn't. I understand it's off-topic but have been regularly following ur blog and couldn't stop myself asking for your views on it.

Keep up the good work, your work is making a difference.

In one of the recent posts it was mentioned that the professional association of an advocate in any case does not have to be above board as far as his personal integrity or ideology is concerned. To find fault with Mr. Salve brackets you with the media honchos who were blaming Arun Jaitely for defending P.J.Kurien in a rape case.

  6. In a single stroke, Katju has beatean the entire Media crooks who supported SD yesterday.

SD would be wondering why this case was not heard by Katju!.

Surely Katju beats Zero Sibal, Theek Hai MMS and the rest..

Please replace Gandhi's photo and blindfolded statue of justice with Katju's photos in all courts.

"During this period, Sanjay suffered a lot and had a cloud hovering over " - SD should marry Katju... and I can't even imagine how the media would celebrate...

  9. SC while meddling into every other field does not consider judicial reforms as something desperately needed. British judicial system was designed to keep India as slaves. If bureaucracy is non-functional, judiciary is practically dead. Twenty years for delivering justice to mass murderers? When headed by pro-criminal anti-social judges like Katju, you can expect nothing better

  10. SD can get Italian citizenship and serve the term in Italy.

  11. Justics Katju did it again !!!

"Surely, this is a lesser offence than murder. When the Governor of Maharashtra granted pardon to Nanavati, surely he can grant pardon to Sanjay Dutt," Justice Katju said.

He said that although Mr Dutt had committed an offence, there are extenuating circumstances, such as that the event happened 20 years ago.

"During this period, Sanjay suffered a lot and had a cloud hovering over his head throughout. He had to undergo various tribulations and indignities during this period. He had to go to court often, he had to take the permission of the court for foreign shootings, he could not get bank loans, etc," Justice Katju said.

The PCI chairperson said Mr Dutt had already spent 18 months in jail, had married and has two children.

"He has not been held to be a terrorist and had no hand in the bomb blasts. His parents Sunil Dutt and Nargis worked for the good of society and the nation. Sunil Dutt and Nargis often went to border areas to give moral support to our brave jawans and did other social work for the society," Justice Katju said.

He added that Mr Dutt, in the period of 20 years since the blasts, has through his films revived the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and his message, an apparent reference to 'Gandhigiri' in the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

Birds of a feather flock together !!!!

Wow - do movie on Gandhi and you get immunity in one offence. Do a movie on her boss Sonia Gandhi and you get immunity for life and may be in next births too...

Now was it his personal capacity he wrote or in capacity as PCI chair. Is he demanding leniency for all small time criminals lodged in our jails rottting there years together without even a trial.

It was a Tamasha listening to Ketkar, Bhatt and Majid Memon on Timesnow yesterday. Ketkar as usual linked it to Babri. Poor Terrorists were agitated because of attack on Islam and hence replied with peaceful "Aman ki Aasha" type bombing.

There should be such changes in law - if convicted, pay price for the time you escaped the punishment.

    2. I don't understand how people can be passing negative comments on the ruling of a country's Supreme Court. I believe, if citizens of a nation deny the ruling of the apex court, they should be charged.

  14. as a teenager, when i started driving, i simply hated wearing helmets or putting on seat belts (in those days it was not mandatory). nowadays, sometimes my boss sits in my car (he sits in his back seat in his own car) and when i'm driving and he's in the front seat i ask him to fasten his seat belts. he often asks me "rishi tumko seat belts uncomfortable aur inconvenient nahi lagta hai ?? and i always tell him "sir when law says something my personal liking or disliking, comfort or discomfort, convenience or inconvenience becomes irrelevant and insignificant. now coming to the topic of sanjay dutt, i don't feel ashamed in saying i love sanjay dutt as an actor. i've been his big fan, liked his work. and there is a certain section in my brain which feels sorry for what he is getting (from law). but then, he acted in a specific way to which he got a specific treatment as per the provisions of law. and to me the matter ends there. ofcourse i'm a human being and i will feel sorry if a person whom i like is going through pain of some kind but i'm also a law abiding, patriotic citizen. and as a patriotic citizen, i must respect the law of the land and respect its tallest institution - the supreme court and thus all my other emotions become completely irrelevant and insignificant.

  17. Whilst I understand the underlying rational for your article , I do have a different view on our judiciary / judicial system . There is an urgent need ( past overdue for long ) to do a complete overhaul of existing laws and bring it in sync with the exigencies of present day india and keeping in view what is the end purpose of any punishment ?? Plus twenty years is too long a time ( and in case of the 1984 riots - it is nearing thirty years ).
And I am saying not just because it is Sanjay Dutt but for everyone of us ( Indians ) . If someone indeed becomes a good person , repents and resolves to go straight then the law should take cognizance of that . Anyway in this case , there is also possibility of pardon by Governor ( I believe there is some provision to this effect to reduce the sentence ). So the last word is not yet out on this . And given he is a film star with connections - he may probably get that . And if that happens - all this has been much ado over nothing . It would once again prove that perhaps We as a nation continue to be preoccupied in petty issues and not revolutionary / radical thought to reinvent ourselves

I suppose he will ask for the dismissal of the governor if he doesn't get what he wants.in the same debate I came to know that the guy who just destroyed SD's gun ,got life inprisonment, what kind of a justice is this ? Sd shud count himself lucky instead of lobbying for mercy.

  20. Of course Sanjay Dutt is innocent. Reasons: (Read All otherwise you may miss his good qualities)
1-He kept AK-56s for self and family protection even after having 3 licensed guns.(Responsible son/father/brother)
2-He kept grenades...umm..lets say for more self protection. (more responsible and perfectionist when it comes to protecting his family)
3-He destroyed the evidence...so that nobody else is hurt coz of weapons. (Thoughtful & caring for mankind)
4-After the 1993 blasts, he shipped away 2 guns. (Charitable/Philanthropist)
5-He ran to gangsters for protection...after all they run the country's law and order.(Law abiding citizen)
6-He was in touch with Anees Ibrahim, Abu Salem and others....our future wannabe politicians. (Believes in democratic process)
7-He has recently started a family and has small children.....he is the last man on earth who has & can make a family. (Doting father and husband)
8-Last and the most important one, he is close friends with Salman Khan...the most decent and cultured person in the world who kills animals and humans for party and after party. (Keeps good company)

    2. Hmm Friends with Salman Khan. Salman is the guy who not only killed endangered black deer, ran over a homeless poor in macho speeding, but also got police in Delhi to raid thousands of small-time shopkeepers and roadside hawkers for intellectual-property infringement just because they were selling T-shirts that carried the slogan, "Being Human" --over which it seems the Khans have a copyright. Pal Preity Zinta too condemned the shopkeepers for stealing IPR "whose proceeds the benevolent Khan had intended to set aside for charity."
Shahrukh refused to testify ! This big King Khan has incorporated a filthy item-song with lewd addresses to Hindu deity Radha, in his heart & soul home production. We all know that some Khan would get his brains blown and abdomen ripped open by his own dad if he attempted such mischief with Fatma. But then, the Khans obviously have a patent on "Being Human" & on "charity"

    1. I am not sure you read carefully or have read the links provided in the post. Turning a 4-year sentence into a 30 year behind his back seems legal to you? I would consider it a very twisted sense of justice. In case you bothered to read the story, Billy Hayes was tortured, beaten up and sent into a prison for mentally ill. Even in that the jailor attempted raping him. Following widespread allegations the a Turkish Constitutional body itself commuted sentences by 5 years for all drug convicts. So I recommend do read the story before trying to play a "victim" and comparing him to Sanjay Dutt. I consider it unfortunate that you think its the equivalent of MSMs sympathy for Sanjay Dutt. Tragic!

  22. Mahesh Butt did not say Sanjay was innocent. He had only asked the judiciary to show mercy. He seemed sensible enough ro understand the gravity of crime Sanjay had committed.

Regarding turning hostile cases, not only Shahrukh and Salman, Rakesh Roshan who was shot at also turned hostile. The police case was weak. The intercepted phone calls could not be established as evidence as there were no proof the voice on the other side was indeed Chota Shakeel. Thats why everyone turned hostile.

Do not write something without getting facts right.

    2. In Jesca Lul murder case of a bargirl in a possibly drunken brawl, retrial judge, a Singh gentleman, convicted witness Manssi to prison terms for expressing doubt in court on the veracity of his purported own former statement to the police about who fired which shot. He was convicted to prison term because the retrial judge felt that his retraction in court --lie (?or lackadiasical nonchalance)had unfairly let murderers go scott free. I personally feel the witness had a point and should be given the benefit of doubt because it is not always realistic to expect a casual onlooker to be accurately sure in his impression to decide for certainty who shot first shot or how many shots. I mean the incredible auditory-visual co-ordination required leaves margin for human error.
On the other hand, the plea offered by NS for an entire gamut of Bollywood stalwarts going hostile is laughable, going by the Jiska retrial judge's logic.

Does he is 'Indirectly' suggesting Governor of Maharashtra that he has to pardon Sanjay Dutt? First of all our great Judicial system took 20 long years to Convict Sanjay Dutt when there was Clear cut case against him.Now great Markandey Katju said "Sanjay Dutt suffered a lot for 20 long years" What the hell he suffered? If tomorrow Delhi Gangrape criminals ask for pardon saying they committed the crime 'in spur of moment',Girl was with her boy friend at night and blah blah, will they show mercy? Once again Sycophants Congress man's and Pseudo-Congress man - Markandey Katju has shown they don't care for Law and order.Isn't this insult of 'Law abiding citizens' like us?
