Come Fly With Us

On the Wharton-WIEF episode this is what I wrote a few days ago: “One of the things about USA that I admire is that they consider even one American being attacked as an act against the country. Reprisal is assured. Any American attacked anywhere in the world is taken very seriously by the US govt. In contrast, the Indian GOI values Indian lives very casually”. The anti-national elements thrill and cheer when an Indian is “snubbed” by other countries or institutes abroad because of their political ideologies. To the Congress and the Communists India or Indians never came first. So it’s hardly surprising that Italy has now refused to return the two Marines charged with two fishermen off the coast of Kerala. I don’t blame the Italians one bit. On the contrary I applaud their govt for standing by their citizens' right through the whole incident and events after.

It’s funny to think Ram Singh, the accused in the Delhi Gangrape case, decided to commit suicide in Tihar jail. And though there isn’t a final confirmation if it was suicide or murder Ram Singh could have used some innovative excuses. He could have asked to visit his wife or family for Holi or Shivratri and then disappeared. After all, another rape-accused, Bitty Mohanty, did jump parole and disappear for seven years. Till a few months back Durai Dayanidhi, son of a top politician and accused in the granite scam in Tamil Nadu, was absconding for many months till a court allowed him bail. In the Gopal Kanda case (Geetika Sharma suicide) another accused, Chanshivroop Singh has jumped bail and fled to the US. The sob story can go on and on.

In the famous murder case of Gulshan Kumar of T-Series tapes the Mumbai police had named musician Nadeem (of Nadeem-Shravan fame) as a suspect while he was abroad. Nadeem, who was in the UK then, decided never to come back to India and face trial and still lives in the UK. You would think it is quite silly of the police who want to nab a suspect but would announce his name so he can happily stay away from interrogation or trial. Any sensible Police unit would have stayed quiet till the suspect returned and then announced and arrested him. Nadeem, on learning he was named a suspect, stayed on in the UK and his asylum case went right up to the House of Lords who refused to extradite him. Back then the House of Lords was like a Supreme Court and the UK now has a separate Supreme Court. The rule for Indian police is to first be foolish and then play out a long-drawn extradition exercise. It’s a very repetitive story, isn’t it?

Other countries make it extremely difficult for us to get a criminal back to India for a trial. And I’m talking about an “Indian” criminal not a Honduran or a foreigner from Burkina Faso. But what happens if there is a rare case of someone being actually extradited? Remember Abu Salem? His wife was hired for Reality shows. Salem himself wanted to contest elections from Azamgarh (he would have won too). The Portuguese even demanded that Salem be returned for improper treatment of the accused. The late Jagjit Singh Chauhan, master-mind of the Khalistan terror movement was given asylum abroad. And our media never forgets to do favours to those absconding. MF Hussain who was wanted by Indian courts absconded and finally went into exile and died. The Indian media hailed him as a hero who was hounded out. No matter what the cause, a person running from Indian courts is a fugitive and must be treated as such. Media glorifies criminals and fugitives.

Lalit K Modi, the former IPL boss, is wanted in India for questioning. He is happily in the UK and frequently appears on TV shows as a panellist. Really nice! How did we get here? Firstly, it wouldn’t be wrong to say our govt has turned this into a Banana republic that many have chosen to call it. The Italian Marines were first sent home for Christmas and returned. They were allowed to go home again to vote. To vote? How absurd can this get? Most Armed-forces personnel are allowed to vote through post from where ever they are located. This could have been considered for the Italians too but no our govt wanted to be generous.

It now raises the suspicion why the Italians backed out. Of course, I maintain that I applaud the Italian govt for standing up for their Marines. They had disputed the legality of the shooting incident right from the start. It’s the Indian govt that has shamed itself and the nation. There will be whispers and then a general connection made that there may have been some backdoor deals with the Italians. This comes at a time when the Italians are investigating the Agusta Westland Chopper scam and many inconvenient names from India may have popped out. So is this a deal with the Italians to protect such names? Time will tell (or maybe time will bury this scam too).

What we do know is that far from being a super-power or any close to it, we have truly become the laughing stock of the world. When it’s terror we play “dossier-dossier” with Pakistan. I’m convinced we will do the same with Italy as we have been doing with Pakistan, with the Bofors players, with Nadeem and many such cases. The Indian govt has a permanent label on its head “come fly with us”.

PS: On a different note, I had a chat with Prasanna Vishwanathan of CRI last week. Those who didn’t get the link through Twitter/FB can hear it on Youtube.

  1. The indian govt started treating italian govt promise as a revolving one! This is nothing but fraud!

  2. I share your thought abt being proud of italy standing by its soldiers. We've become, kind of, laughable and mockable across the globe. Just abt anybody can take us for a ride (flight). Its good, in the pretext of this latest issue with the italians, indian investigative agencies will get yet another opportunity to visit italy on your and my money. Again you've rightly pointed out, this case has strings attached to the chopper deal. Its hardly a coincidence

  3. Missed out one small point. Imagine our system, people being let out of jails for christmas. In some cases investigative agencies not arresting people in view of Ied and ramzaan. I mean its really a joke of some kind.

  4. Jagjit Singh Chauhan has died about six to seven years back while he was staying in India at his native place Tanda Urmar in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. Probably Ganga Singh Dhillon is still alive and continues his romance with Khalistan. But there are many like them abroad who keep spewing venom against India and often keep visiting here.

  7. It is a great article but pity the people who understand all this cannot decide the Indian Future and the ones who can need just 100 rs, Tharra and a plate of Biryani .

This country wont be doomed That is an assured conclusion but the only consolation is that it isnt being properly governed either........

  8. Ravinar....you have missed the biggest .....Union Carbide chief, arrested and then taken out of country in MP Government's plane. What was the deal in that? Only corruption or a surrender of sovereignty? Still we do not know. Union carbide killed 3000 Indians and made life extremely difficult for thousands living in that area.

  9. Huh!

Thats a slap on our face.
    And, a good one too.
I know this is not enough for us to be jolted out of our slumber, but it's good that we are being thrased, and the delusional superpower is being shown it's place in World.

  10. It's a shame! No coincidence, it must be a deal to not reveal Chopper deal culprits. Congress has sold our dignity as a country. And that moron Karan Thapar tries to find the acceptability of Modi's definition of secularism with other morons who still go on with selective portion of 'Raj Dharma' comments by ABV! Where will be as a country, God forbid UPA comes back in power? It worries me a lot!

  11. Frank Sinatra , of the blogging world , your words hit the nail on the head, another brilliant piece .

The whole system has become insidious, unless we start valuing our country's culture and society as a whole , unless we start respecting the country we live in where we are free to practice our chosen religions , live as we want to , we wont see a change happening .

We do get people like Ram Singh and gang doing heinous crimes everyday in this country itself , we dont need to go abroad some get highlighted ,some don't fitting the propaganda of MSM who are doing even bigger crime by twisting facts , worse sometimes even creating them from their figment of imagination , without revealing their omnipresent "sources" .

Law makers thinking putting "Value questions" in Physics paper of Board exams will solve the issue , such horse crap , they give tickets to the filthiest of alleged , many times convicted criminals , favour relatives , the list is huge , respite from this is unforeseeable unless a radical change happens in how things are done in this country.

Then we have a even more dangerous group a select from the "Bhuddhajivi Varg" who are ready to vouch for worst criminals , sign for their amnesty petitions , question the judicial system for their convictions .

When these things are rampant in our country , we can't even expect other countries valuing us , but only the usual charade which people at the helm of our country are good at "Dossier-Dossier Games" .

  12. Really, India is an international laughing stock, and we have delusions of being a super power, Delhi being a world-class city, etc., etc. If you look from outside, what kind of vision does our PM inspire? No wonder the Pakis and the Chinese don't care two hoots for us?

Similar delusions were harbored by the Great Chacha after our independence who thought himself as a World Statesman and this view was propagated by the state machinery, the AIR and the newspapers of that time. Do you know what Mao called this great Chacha?

From Chacha to Pappu, things haven't changed a bit. If anything, there is further decay in our nation. There has got to be a sea change if we have to survive, otherwise we shall be sold off to God knows who. Hence, 2014 becomes critical. There is a challenger to the status quo, whom the Macaulay Pappus, the Commies, the disruptionists, all fear, because of his virtual exclusivity from all that these scoundrels believe in or pander to. If he wins, there is possibility of a change. Otherwise, we shall all perish (slowly ?) as corruption will destroy this nation (already a Banana Republic now).

  13. come mai un leopardo cambia le sue macchie, sonia rimarrà sempre italiano e agirà nell'interesse del suo paese, dunque perché agiscono indignato e sorpreso? - just like a leopard never changes its spots, sonia will always remain italian and will act in her country's interests, therefore why act outraged and surprised ?

  16. Regarding the Italian Marines, soon I expect some articles from friendly media that it was the fishermen's fault that resulted in the firing by marines.

Another possible spin is: the incident happened in International waters and has no Jurisdiction.

What I am sure is that, there will be a spate of articles on how the stand of India is wrong and the stand of Italy is right.

Surya Gangadharan of CNN-IBN has already started imparting some spin on the story.

  17. Why they cannot just send back all Italian embassy staff and call back ours from there.

Why cannot they bring a bill to say that any country not respecting Indian laws in any case will be debarred from defence deals and other investment opportunities.

    Why

    Ask Sonia ji

  18. Good point Ravinar! I am sure the views expressed here are shared by many others. However, I am a little concerned that this post is a little political in nature and not observing the media's coverage of this. I just wanted to highlight the fact that the blog shouldn't deviate to be critical of the government (which is already a known and shared opinion) when its purpose is to criticize the media. Maybe when such a post is written, you can have a disclaimer stating that this is your political opinion and the fact that the post might deviate from the normal purpose of this blog.

Keep writing! Always love to read your posts.

  19. These are my thoughts on what GOI should do.
Immediately arrest Italian Ambassador. There will be reaction from Italian side by reciprocating the same with our Ambassador there. Then Indian should give an ultimatum to International community, either you do business with us or with Italy.Who ever won't listen to our demands GOI should pack off their Ambassadors and Immediately stop doing business with them.I would prefer starting with Britain.
You can ask what will this achieve. The soft power tag will be replaced by hard power and super power too.And second and most importantly it will convey the message to the world "Don't mess with Indians"

Ofcourse this will happen only in my dreams though.
    Hope NaMo listening.

    1. Hahaha,@dc.....440: You surely look far more convincing than the previous foreign minister Mr. Krishna, who instead of reading his own speech in the UN, read the speech that was prepared by the Greek representative after days of hard work.

    2. Unfortunately, while this sounds good in paper, it is not possible in reality for any country. Why do you think Britain is not invading the Ecuadorian embassy to arrest Julian Assange? Even he has flouted a British court order. Why can't China (despite its hard nature) just arrest the Japanese ambassador when the coast guard arrest Chinese vessels (and reportedly tortured them)? That's because real world diplomacy is a whole different ball game. Attacking/invading or threatening an embassy or ambassador is considered as an act of declaring war on the country. No one will dare do it as the international implications are massive. India has to act tough but street style vengeance won't work here.

    3. @terry john @Kamal

You guys missed this "Ofcourse this will happen only in my dreams though."

Aray bhai Krishna saab tho doosre desh ki FM ke kayali pulao mein the.Even if he read others letters that shouldn't surprise us.

Anyhow it is doable and within our rights. What other countries had done or haven't done it's irrelevant. In Assange case I don't think Equador Ambassador haven't given a sworn affidavit. And British have no jurisdiction on Equadorian embassy. In Chinese case they either give them demarche or send the Ambassador packing. But we all know Chinese are playing a game.
But in India's case Italians made a mockery of SC and in total made a mockery of Indian Judicial system and undermined it.Ofcourse you can create pressure on a drip wise by imposing sanctions one by one.If you want to send a strong message then this is the time.

Ofcourse this will happen only in my dreams though.

Only few Temples demolished, and some infidels killed.
    Not a grave matter.
That's why MSM as well as social media is silent over this entire event.
