Why Arnab Quit

If you haven’t read TOI-Story I recommend you do – Part-1 and Part-2. The Jains at TOI group have admitted that they are NOT in the business of news. They are in the business of advertising and PR. They learned from Sir Richard Branson that publicity is what sells and no publicity should ever be given free. And that is how “Paid news” was partly born in India. For years now, the front page of TOI is masked with a full-page ad sheet that is stuck to the paper and most people tear out the irritating thing before reading anything they want to. Giving front page coverage for major news that measures the pulse of the nation, public figures or celebrities pays far less. So TOI’s front-page is now an advertisement page. And a newspaper in India is statutorily obligated to cover only 33% of its total space with news items.

So if you understand the philosophy of the Jains – politics, ideology, nationalism and such things are secondary to money that flows from ads, entertainment, smut and sensationalism. Seriously, TOI carries blogs by that Radio Mirchi guy Prashant Panday and other garbage writers like Sagarika Ghose or Shobha De. You get the picture. Corruption is no stranger to TOI or their reporters either. Thus, you will find fake stories like “Rambo” or the recent death of an old man due to demonetisation at a non-existent ATM of HSBC in Mumbai. Everything Arnab Goswami did was fine as long as it did not affect any of TOI’s cash-cows.

When TimesNow started off in 2005 it was more a mix of everything. More like the redundant “Illustrated weekly of India” by TOI that died some 25 years ago. Then Arnab realised that drama, theatre and decibel means a lot. He learned this from the hate-mongers at NDTV. People don’t remember that Barkha Dutt’s “We the people” and Rajdeep Sardesai’s very noisy, bickering nonsense called “The big fight” were very noisy, bitchy shows. So Arnab did what he thought it best to beat his erstwhile colleagues at their own game. He turned TimesNow into a high-decibel show but with a passion and nationalism that was uncommon with his former colleagues. He added a good dose of entertainment and humour which is in keeping with TOI’s basic business. He also treated politicians and political parties as “accused” with pompous statements like “nation wants to know”. The crowds just loved this. And soon Arnab would have a whole cricket or football team as panellists for all his debates.

The other thing that Arnab did well was Paki-bashing and his demonstrated contempt for Lutyens crawlers. Being the most watched English news channel for a long time also got him prized interviews like that with PM Modi in June this year. This too burned a lot of hearts. In October, this year news broke that Arnab had resigned from Timesnow. After 11 years! It shocked the news world and the audiences alike. His detractors must have thrown a party – especially burned hearts like Barkha, Rajdeep and others. Many reports indicated there was a problem the Jains had with Arnab’s increasing right-leaning conduct of debates and the reporting by the channel. But that is not entirely true.

Arnab has hounded Nitin Gadkari for 19 consecutive weeks over an imaginary scam and corruption that turned out to be false. He also hounded Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje over LalitGate as he called it. It compelled me to write “ArnabGate” because of the targeted hounding of these BJP members without genuine cause. ArnabGate trended at the top in India on Twitter and also worldwide. That must have upset the hashtag king that Arnab had become with his channel. Anyway, post the Uri terror attack in September there was uncontrollable anger against Pakistan in India. Pak and those “pseudo-liberals” (as Arnab called them) who were Pak stooges in India were dead meat for Arnab. And night after night for nearly a month he tore into them with all the swords and daggers at his command. The audience applauded. Arnab even got threats from terror-operators and had to be provided security by the GOI.

Arnab was also critical of Pak actors and those employing them in Bollywood for not speaking up against the terrorists and against Pakistan. In particular, Karan Johar and some of his Paki darlings in a movie were caught in the storm. Arnab and many in India (including me) demanded these Paki clowns should exit India if they do not condemn killing of our Jawans. This was a line that Arnab had crossed that would not be tolerated by Jains no matter what the cost. The kind of power Johar and his gang have over TOI should not be underestimated. And Vineet Jain let it be known too:

Why was it the end for Arnab? Because Bollywood is a BIG cash-cow for the Jains. And to antagonise that industry was very damaging. Let me explain. TOI has a certain set of Bollywood stars that it will NEVER write against. No criticism will ever be made, their worst movies will never be trashed. I am not giving you gossip. I am giving you the inside story of how TOI operates with Bollywood. Paid promotion of stars, paid promotion of movies, paid promotions on TV all adds up to a huge business that runs into hundreds of crores. Those glossy pages you see with TOI, often with Bollywood stars who also double up as product endorsers, means phenomenal money for them.

There are desk reporters in all branches of TOI who can ring up a top or low level star for an instant interview over phone to fill pages. These stars are like “empanelled stars” obligated to give interviews and TOI will always write positive stuff about them and in turn those stars will promote their movies through TOI’s media empire. And now TOI is present in all major film domains – Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai etc. I cannot put a finger to it but even a rough estimate of anywhere between 500-800 crores from Bollywood alone per year would not be a bad estimate. And no Arnab Goswami can stand in the way of that kind of money.

Other than that, TOI also has its Filmfare magazine. I don’t think the magazine sells all that much anymore but their Filmfare awards are prized by the film and acting community. The awards, the award function survives on enthusiastic participation by the film community. Without their support, it would flop. It is probable that many Bollywood hotshots would have called up Vineet Jain and complained about Arnab’s tirade against Bollywood. Maybe some even threatened consequences. And that was that. Arnab’s quitting Timesnow has nothing to do with news or his way of conducting debates or the political stands he takes. It doesn’t have anything to do with Pakistan or terrorists. It’s just simply – Bollywood and money for TOI.

  1. This article reveals the hostage News bodies are in India. There is no objective towards the cause of news and blatant siding with close to anti-national activity, promoting aman-ki-asha, promoting farzi-hit bollywood celbrities(?). This revelation is very different angle of Ravinar's investigative writing. Kudos.

  2. Arnab could have joined another less known English news channel like News24 or something, and that would have been an end of TimesNow as all his audiences would move with him . Jains would have learned a lesson. What he currently plans to do as per his inputs lately, is definitely worthwhile, but might take longer to show results to Jains or anyone else.

    1. It is well known fact that 'every line on TOI is paid'. Aranab became a legend though my wife can't stand the noise on his nine pm slot because she too hates Pakistani guests as much as I do because they talk so much crap against India. I tell her that that is the way Arnab makes Pakis look so stupid as they just are and thus creates a anti-Pak audience. Jain's can go on earning on the back of Bollywood as also Congress as they have no journalistic love. Money is honey for them and so be it. I have a feeling some one will get Arnab and lauch a channel which will, perhaps finish Barkha, Rajdeep and some more from the face of TV news, sooner the better as both continue to embarrass us with their 'bias' without providing NEWS. Only time will tell.

  10. We know TOI very well, rt from its inception.wonder why its is still running in Independent India? There is no-doubt about Bollywood-ISI-TOI Nexus. why only TOI virtually all English Dailies, All of them are controlled by ISI.
As long as there is " Self Regulation Nonsense" attached to media , they have a free run..its not only because there r pathetically corrupt..some times they are helpless, either financiasl obligation or traped in comi-congressi ISI nexus. thats why they even compromise national security , national ethos!
Only a strict regulator consisting all stakeholder of society, with robust journalism ethics could rebuke the lost credibility of media Industry.

    1. I have worked in ToI. There is no such thing as ISI nexus. But Bollywood as a money churning machine is true. But it is also true that ToI is not a follower of Bollywood. It may be the other way around. Bollywood is jot a single entity. ToI is.
The Jain's are a-political at least in their public stance. I don't think they will be influenced by some silly Bollywood joker. They face much bigger pressures from politicians.
However, the print version editorial team belongs to the mediacrooks gang.

  11. Dear Sir, Could you please confirm if ToI n major outlets are funded by Vaticans n Islamic Funding? You see Karan Johar doing absolute cheapest Talk shows telecast in STAR channel, again funded by Christian groups. His (being a gay himself) talk shows only revolve around gays/homosexuality, n promote their sex life, how they kiss, n how they indulge, date etc. Indian TV Channels led by Bollywood biggies, funded by Dawood n Christian groups have almost destroyed India's age-old culture, values, heritage. Unfortunately, our youth so called educated mass fall into these traps, and forget about their culture n values. My Friend said ADHM was all about two unknown persons meeting only to drink, eat n have sex. How could Aishwarya stoop to so low n crass movie. Simply unbelievable. On the top of it, Karan Johar's crap movies abuse Hindu religions, Hindu faith, Hindu Gods, in their dialogues, in their content. Really shocking majority Indians are not even aware of the Bollywood terrorists who act like an Internal Enemies n try to disrupt age-old Indian culture. Dawood must have given a supari to finish Pro-Hindu Bollywood stars and asked them to fall in line. It is simply unbelievable that the Islamic gang is pressurising TV Channels n media outlets to have control over the nation's pulse. Toilet paper is the biggest sold out paper, full of Deshdrohi elements as "Five Star Intellectuals". May God give Arnab the strength to expose these dangerous machinery who have spread their tentacles for last 68 years.

  22. Add to that, the personal peeve of very influential Karan Johar, who, by his own indirect admission in 'Koffee with Karan', may be in a gay relationship with Fawad Khan. remember how he was blushing when Twinkle Khanna asked him to add his 'Favorite Khan' (Fawad Khan) to the list of stars to be ranked. In additiona, many Bollywood producers depend on Pak Underworld/Dawood money(remember Jhamu Sugandh, Karim Morani etc). Some of the movies now a days are being tuned to humor Muslims in different parts of d world and Paki actors r an asset there.
In summary Bollywood, Underworld, Black Money, pakis have a dirty nexus!

  23. Bollywood is a cauldron of scandals, sleaze and black money. To cover that up, the actors put on a show of respectability and address each other as "ji" in public which is as fake as their eye lashes and toupees. The common thread that runs among all of them is a super fragile ego - which cracks at the "c" of a criticism. So I am not surprised the pansy Karan Johar complained & got Arnab removed. Sometimes, things happen for the best. Arnab is going to come back louder and stronger and lets see then, where these pansies run for cover.

  26. Good analysis. Media and Movies are inseparable twins. Vineet Jain needs to protect his FoE under threat from Bollywood. So is the FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION expected only when the government/ruling party questions them and not when they are threatened by other interest groups. What a dichotomy, the FoE is selective application

Media never had ethics. the so called journalists were college drop outs giving lectures how country can move forward. They were never patriots, but allowed themselves to be used as doormats & toilet paper by the Politicians.
Indian news media never had any standards, other than making money!!!

  37. I saw the evolution of Times of India operating from Mumbai & then to Delhi & many other regional versions, predicted 40 years before their raise for they have identified the vacuum that exists in the media space & in 90's they recalibrated their business strategies, to be ahead of NDTV, then NDTV was making waves, being a private news channel often compared to Doordarshan (govt controlled) for variety of news it telecast.
Newspaper became a tabloid with full page naked female models images being printed, then a court case, put an end to it, not so completely, it continued further, being a business community, it had no enmity with any one, its focus remained $ $ $. Indiatimes.com when it was launched, with clear objective to occupy e-commerce space, but limited itself to digitial songs & movies & failed.
Even prostitutes have certain Principles, but TOI did not have any, it is ready to sleep with anyone so long they can make money.
Think its downfall has just began watch this space.... & mark the downfall milestones in coming years.

  38. If much of the businesses seen today are linked to death of Indira Gandhi and rise of Rajiv Gandhi, when these businesses made their foundations and are surviving on it even today. Take any media or PR marketing organizations. Spying & spies increased and penetrated every organizations. Growth of NGO's are traced to Rajiv Gandhi ascendancy to throne. Khangress had its grass root workers recruited to every govt department & be a khangress reporter & corruption exponentially increased for every khangress worker(educated) got jobs in govt or became govt agents (uneducated), the nexus between govt workers & politicians became strong, during this period and is continuing even today as seen from the appointments in UP & Bihar the most rotten indian states. Time to destroy these states or break them in to further smaller states. Unfortunately these rotten states hold 3/4 of electoral MPs strength.
Bihar saw entire Lalu family becoming cabinet ministers & holding all ministries, next the Pehalwan family Mulayam Singh Yadav in UP. Now Mamta is doing in West Bengal. Chandrababu Naidu doing it in Andhra Pradesh. A rule / law to be passed that NO political or state or centre = cannot hold more than TWO terms and thats the end of it. This is the only way to stem the rotten families influencing corrupt India.
