The Shoe Finally Pinches TOI

“The conventional approach is, therefore, imperfect since it does not capture the information that is of most relevance to teenagers and younger audiences. Advertisers or PR agencies have come to acquire a near monopoly of the information supply in these areas. Newspapers often have to rely on these sources of information for their copy. It is not unusual for newspapers to use leads from PR agencies to make their own copy. Professional news gatherers have long since ceased to treat PR agencies as anathema; indeed, many see them as an invaluable 'source'.”

The para above wasn’t written by me. It’s a quote from TOI’s article introducing Medianet in 2003. What exactly is Medianet? It replaces the PR firms planting articles in the media. TOI decided to do it themselves. So when you open your Sunday edition and look at the glossy supplements with a grand story on best wines (with pics of some top brands prominently featured) or the luxury-leather business you should know who’s been working really hard. Then there’s Private Treaties, another of TOI’s innovations. You should have known better; nothing is free at TOI. Want publicity for your movie? You pay TOI! Want a new launch reported? You pay TOI! Having a convention or a seminar and invite the press to cover? You pay TOI. Nothing is free! Being the leader, TOI’s frivolous practices have been quickly emulated by almost the entire media. And all this crap under the privilege of “journalism”.

Any genuine marketer will tell you advertising doesn’t sell. Publicity does! Sometimes even bad publicity sells (That’s why Bollywood often engineers controversies just before release of some movies). That’s why Arvind Kejriwal does a “nautanki” on the streets. Samir Jain learned from Richard Branson. You see, Branson didn’t have money to advertise or impress the press, so he undertook his own crazy stunts which the media had to report, for free. Samir Jain saw that as opportunity to make more money and that nothing should be reported free (read TOI Story). His brother Vineet Jain, who jointly runs the business, told New Yorker’s Ken Auletta: “We are not in the newspaper business, we are in the advertising business”. So what explains the following which appeared as a “Note to readers” by TOI on January 23, 2014 (edited excerpt)?

It is being said that this paper, after initially supporting AAP, has now 'turned' against it. We were prepared for this. We have been called pro-Congress, anti-Congress, pro-BJP, anti-BJP. We have been accused by some of being cheerleaders for Narendra Modi, and by others of running a campaign against him. And depending on who you listen to, we are either too soft or too hard on Rahul Gandhi. Truth is, we have no political masters, nor do we have any hidden agendas. The only side we take is that of our readers… We want to make India a better place for our children; we want them to grow up with hope, not despair. Our job is to inform, educate, entertain, guide, and above all, help every reader realise his or her full potential… We believe taxpayers have a right to expect that their money is spent honestly, prudently and wisely—instead of disappearing down the ratholes of sloth, corruption and political handouts. We believe natural resources need to be allocated fairly and transparently. We believe that business, when honestly conducted, is good for the nation. We believe in the creation of opportunity for the greatest number. We will support Modi, Rahul, Kejriwal and every other politician every time they do the right thing. But no one should expect a blank cheque from us. Our sole allegiance is to our reader, not to any politician or party.

Really? TOI cares about its readers? Then it gets even better! TOI wants to make India a better place for children? I apologise if you fell off your chair. It’s not your fault. Did TOI suddenly have an attack of conscience? We don’t know, we can only make a fair estimate. But what I can tell you with a certain amount of confidence is that money has to be behind the note. Nothing else drives TOI.

It is true that as India’s biggest advertising house TOI generates enough money and can withstand being bulldozed by politicians or political parties. But it is also true that some of their biggest advertisers do have political leanings. I cannot list all the crimes of TOI over the years but let me give one good example of how the reader is treated as a fool by this ad agency. A reader buys a paper and trusts the front page for the most important news of the day. Advertisers like the quarter page ad on the front page (usually at the bottom right) because the ad attains “news status” and is impossible to miss.

TOI thought what the hell; let’s make the ad the front page itself. This started sometime back and once in March 2010 it started with a full front page and went on through the inside pages as well for a new car brand. TOI doesn’t care about the irritation it causes the readers. Mind you, I am in no way suggesting ads shouldn’t be carried in an innovative manner but then don’t also brag about caring for readers if one is going to spam them on the front page. The practice of front page ads got better and better. The one on the left is a latest one from this month. There is something interesting about this. TOI realised that since their front page had become a “hoarding”, readers were smart enough to just pull out the whole page and dump it and not even bother looking at it. Now TOI feels a lot smarter, you know. So what they do now is use adhesive and paste that “hoarding” on top of the real “news front page” so you will have to tear it off before you get to the news page. Care for readers? Who are these scumbags fooling?

Now, where political nonsense of TOI is concerned the entire group, like many others, has been hounding the BJP and Narendra Modi in particular. I doubt anybody missed that. The most glaring example of this grand adventure would be that of the fake “Rambo” report after the Uttarakhand floods in June 2013. Anyone remember that? That bogus story was in the media for several days and played over and over again on TV. Now that page has disappeared but the clarification issued by TOI remains:

And that clarification was dumped in some inside page. LIE BIG, retract small. That’s the technique used. Based on this bogus report other group sidekicks of TOI also start writing blogs on their site with the hilarious lies. Here is one Prashant Panday who is trigger-happy to heap nonsense without much fact-checking:

Where did that Rambo come from? Salma reports it and Sabrina quotes it? Then this same Panday writes BJP claimed 11 lakhs attended Modi’s Patna rally under “bogus crowds”. I’m not sure this number has been claimed anywhere. Then Panday wrote crap about Arun Jaitley and then withdrew the article with a clarification stating his mumbo-jumbo was based on some other news reports. In short, peddling of sheer nonsense! Does TOI have an editor at all? And if that isn’t enough here is another one by TOI where it carries a silly article “Narendra Modi’s solar eclipse” laughably in two different pages by two different writers:

There is much more that can be dug out but that will only exhaust you. And they synchronise the whole campaign with their TV channel. Can TOI explain how it was honest to its readers and viewers when it carried a 19-part witch-hunt of Nitin Gadkari on TimesNow? Or have they already forgotten that? And now they claim they are politically non-aligned. And what are the great practices at TOI? Let’s get some more.

The PCI’s “Paid News” report was buried by the council till it was brought out by pressure and compulsion. Featuring prominently in that report was TOI, as the leader in bringing unethical practices to the news media. Both Private Treaties and Medianet received adverse mentions in that report. You can read the full report here. All their Medianet and Private Treaties related articles and supplements had scant respect for the readers and I would have to say “dishonest” to readers. So all this whining with our “allegiance is to our reader” can’t be taken even with a truck-load of salt. And where the voice of a reader or observer is adverse to TOI then they use their muscle-power to legally drown those voices. This action by TOI against a blogger called Aparajita Lath is worth a read. A young law student, all that Aparijita had done was write an article based on facts and information already in the public domain and nothing more. TOI bullies her but doesn’t take action against any of those powerful people she had quoted in her article.

Did TOI support AAP? Absolutely yes! But it is certainly not the only one. I have time and again pointed out that for over a year when the AAP was neither in govt nor opposition anywhere, their members were allowed a free ride to play the “monkey” and hurl abuses and mindless nonsense against Congress, BJP and against every politician of their choice without any responsibility. Slowly, it became clear that the primary target of AAP was BJP and not the Congress. Are we to believe that all the so called pundits and experts at TOI and Times Now are such idiots that they weren’t seeing all this? Rajdeep Sardesai wonders why this note by TOI. He may have to issue such a note himself one day because CNN-IBN group too has been promoting AAP for a long time. Ashutosh of IBN7 is proof of someone pretending to be a journalist while being a political activist.

TOI doesn’t give a damn about anything but money. So I would ask them to spare the moral sermon. This note to readers can come only for a few reasons. Circulation is falling and readers are seeing through their biased “advertisements” for some political party. A big advertiser must have threatened to pull all advertising if they “did not behave”. And last, but not the least, it is election season and some powerful political party may have threatened to pull out campaign ads if they “did not behave”. These are my estimates and can vary. But one thing is for sure as Vineet Jain said TOI is not in the news business but in the advertising business. Somewhere, the shoe of ads must be shrinking and it is probably starting to pinch.

PS: Please vote on the India’s worst journalists poll -2014 (Right margin of this page).

  1. You hit the nail on the head. I stopped subscribing TOI papers way back in Jan 2010 (I do read the second and third page once in a while online, because there are some important local news). In karnataka, anyone reading TOI would know how they hounded BSY and other BJP leaders. The motives were very clear. I know some of my colleagues in my office as well who have 'unschooled' from TOI

    1. I too stopped subscribing for TOI long back. There is a local Kannada news paper "Vijaya Karnataka" started by Vijay Sankeshwar. This was doing quite well as long as it was in the hands of VS and become No 1 kannada daily in no time. It was then TOI acquired this paper and well known editor and co-editor Mr Vishweshwar Bhat and Pratap Simha who were largely responsible for No 1 status of that daily had to leave the organization and join other Kannada daily, Kannada Prabha. Pratap Simha was very aggressive on secular politics, some congress leaders and even very vocal against Media crooks like Burka Dutt and others. He had back up from his editor. They had a hostile environment as soon as TOI took it over which was evident in Bhat's last letter to Vijay Karnataka staffs. And then was a lot changes in editorial page of that paper. I had no doubts left to understand what TOI works for. Now, I'm reading Kannada Prabha and enjoying Pratap Simha's articles. They are as good as Ravinar's.

  5. I do not read news papers and watch TV news only for video coverage if some interesting news is there. Was an ardent reader of The Tribune Chandigarh but left that Dua went for RS seat instead of reporting news. All news media print or electronic are same they are just advertising agencies of their pay masters. You are absolutely correct calling them Methai Swallowing Media.

Dear Ravinar, Perhaps you missed the bigger point .. it is called as creating an atmosphere of victimhood i.e. to insure themselves against any adverse future government after May 2014, since their lutyen zone based strategy to propel AAP seems to be falling and then they can claim that they were always for their readers :)

  10. Whatever TOI says, they always supported Congress/opposed BJP. Times-Now is very rude to BJP/Modi all the time.. at prime time whatever may b the topic Arnab with other panelists end up with criticizing and laughing at BJP member. His core-team abt election-2014 is full of cong supporters.Even in December 2013 they were concentrating only on Delhi result, ignoring MP/Rajastan/Chattisgud. Their comments were like "both BJP/Cong defeated..there is no Modi wave.. BJP lost morality.."

  12. Great article once again! Just like on political stuff, MSM lies on women's issues too and don't report with full honesty or neutrality there.
e.g. they all create outrage on rape,(BTW that was also one of the things that helped evolve AAP) , but seldom tell that 75% or upto 90% cases are false http://storify.com/time4MAN/falserape-endemic-in-india
Much have been talked about misuse of laws like 498a, but in most discussion MSM takes stand 'any law can be abused, etc.' what they fail to convey that this law is abused 90-98% times. All the political parties including BJP,CONg,AAP are in bed with feminist along with MSM.
There's a new amendment being incorporated in Hindu as well as Special Marriage act, which seeks to give divorce on 'no-fault' theory. While that's welcome but feminist got incorporated a provision that seeks to give 50% of hubby's property (including ancestral) to wife even when no fault of hubby. All pol parties r supporting it and it has been already passed in Rajya Sabha. MSM is also not showing telling the downside of such biased laws. Such law has been one of single biggest factors in destroying family system in the west and will do similar in India too! But MSM is so much sold out on feminist agenda that they fail to tell the complete truth!

I twice wrote e-mail to TOI about him for which rating on his blog was blocked both the times ( first time temporary and second permanently). I also pointed out the time of his blog posting. Most of the blogs written and posted by him was during regular office hours when most of us work. As a CEO of a company you have to be sincere towards your work but this fellow instead of working was busy writing blog.

  18. A small correction is in order. The full front page thing that has now become a habit with TOI, began way back in 2000 with the advertisement of the Indian dot com shooting star indya.com. You can read more about it here: http://retiary.org/idea/idea5/idea_5/indya/indya.htm

  19. May be you should have also covered their Ahmedabad & Surat editions. For years their front page has been "reserved" for anti Modi tirades.Since decades TOI's Gujarati readers have been electing BJP governments in Gujarat. And most of Gujarati readers of TOI are also BJP/Modi supporters. And most of them also make a point to write to TOI about this. And yet they have gone on shamelessly reporting trash on front page.that is their service to the readers.
On their net editions, when I started sending comments against AAP in decent language, I
started getting replies from them stating that " my comments had to be deleted for improper language" ! That was to "prevent" thousands of anti AAP comments when TOI was supporting AAP.
All of them are united in hating Modi- for Modi has grown and is growing without their help!
They had to issue such reminders for many like this reader have stopped viewing their channels. Many still buy those news papers but they do it for those ads! not for their moronic views.

  25. As someone rightly pointed out, TOI started the practice way back in 2000 when they promoted Indya.com. That practice was rendered even more preposterous because that ad read "India is now Indya" or something such. Compromises are not new to TOI. Hell, it is becoming a tradition!

Where cleavage takes precedence over reportage,
    Where chicks score over ethics,
Where substance is lorded over by nonsense,
Where journalistic creed is trampled upon by unbridled greed,
    You have TOI(let)!

Incidentally, 'clown extraordinaire' Prashant Panday was with Radio Mirchi earlier and is now with Times Innovative Media as per his Linkedin profile. And he borrows / quotes generously from TOI to spout nonsense. The 4-0 drubbing of Congress has thankfully stopped his ridiculous blogs on TOI web.

The only parts of TOI that makes readers think are Spellathon and Word Jumble. So much for their commitment to readers! I am only thankful to its online version for giving us reflections of journos like Minhaz Merchant, M J Akbar and Tarun Vijay even though you have to navigate those by morons like Jug, Dilip, Panday, Arun, Bachi, Pritish, Brijesh and a host of others - their arsenal is filled with journalists who will put the profession to shame!

  27. Exactlly..what I had been thinking for the last few days. Remember Narendra Modi's speech in recently concluded BJP National Conclave in Delhi? Though TOIlet paper devoted two and a half pages to the speech, it was all about Modi's attack on MMS, Sonia and Rahul, his statement on Chaiwala and his status as OBC. I thought they made a mockery of a marvelous speech otherwise. Not a single sentence about Narendra Modi's Vision for Development in India.

Then...Then...hold your breath...the editorial in the next day's edition...for a moment one must have thought been written by none other than MoorkhShri Sagaraki Ghose. Anybody who would have heard the speech would have thought like that. The editorial still questioned about Narendra Modi's vision...hillariously..none of the other PM hopefuls have said a word about anything in such details..and TOI has the guts to question that also while peddling the dole of three cylinders by Rahul Gandhi two days back..

As for their support for AAP, the more you say, the less it is...on the front page they question AAP tactics at Rail Bhavan...while the insides are full of praises for AAP and why people still prefer to support AAP...

In this context, the note to readers by TOI was hilarious and at the same time ironic..

Even a TOIlet papers understand its responsibilities better than "The Times of India"..

If people were to form opinions based on their coverage of AAP, I would have seen AAP all over Bangalore. But that hasn't happened. 32. This is awesome. Best written. I would not even hesitate for a moment to say you that you have exactly written the thoughts going through my mind for this shit site we call ToI. It has built itself over all unethical practices.

When I was a kid, during my Xth Standard, the ToI used to publish nude pics or hot articles over it's last page. I remember the first time I saw a Woman Naked was in ToI showing a bare pic of a lady walking in a Nudist Parade, or be it the article on sexiest woman & porn, which was discussed pretty well in entire class. Today, they still haven't changed and can't get enough of their very own Poonam Pandey so much that they now have a separate link in entertainment and even her Bra makes a news for them.

Investigation Journalism is long dead for ToI and sometimes there are barely few resourceful articles deeply hidden, the one I've read were through links provided by Ravinar.

And now their comment system, there you can insult anyone's mother or sister but dare you say anything against the article and authors view and your comment would be marked discriminatory even though there's nothing filthy you've mentioned about anyone there.

Regarding BCCL, it's the parent company of ToI. ToI is actually an ad business. I doubt they even track for location based ads like FB or Google (can't say though). BCCL takes shares and they will never highlight the names of their clients in a any bad way. Even in case of any crisis, they would ensure the company/party in which they have interest, its name is not taken.

I wonder, there are still people who follow ToI but the fact is it's losing viewership. Am sure, there are many people like me who have dropped ToI completely be it online or News based. I believe, this is the best viewers can do. The way they manipulate news, create sensationalism it's unmatched. I hope, the viewership dropping continues so that ToI group can learn a big lesson that after all you cannot fool people forever.

Thanks Ravinar. Keep writing, and please, once a day coz every morning checking your site is the first thing I do.

But he is the Editor of FP, and over the year nobody sold Narendra Modi like FP did. I know every news org exaggerates, FP wasn't an exception.

  36. TOI is the only porn site that you can open in an office. Following cut and paste of most agreed comments on TOI site for that article shows what most readers think:

First start by eliminating semi-nude photos from your web site. That would make this children-friendly (although not the "world's largest selling English daily"). Next, your campaign on behalf of Devyani was clearly motivated. It was not in line with true reporting. Third, get beyond shallow reporting to balanced, in-depth approach to issues. I'm yet to see a deep article in your paper that is not lifted from New York Times or some other source. Finally, stop self-advertising in the news section of your paper. Coming out every now and then and claiming how great the paper is doesn't look good.

The day you interview and publish the story of at least one displaced Kashmiri Hindu, without giving excuses to the other side, I will stop saying you are biased. The day you publish the interview of a wife or child of one of the dead people in that Godra Train Burning, I will stop saying you are biased. The day you publish articles on how the demography of Assam is changing and why there is so much unrest, I will stop saying you are biased. I do log in and read/ comment here, but from Oct 2013, as a mark of protest on your one-sided reporting, I have stopped BUYING the paper.

The fact that you have had to issue a clarification shows something went wrong somewhere. I have seen news items that defend certain business houses or political formations. AAP is just one target that you had to change your stand on after ruling dispensation put pressure on you.

  37. What First post does is to beat both sides of the drum and maintain balance. You will find 2 articles one below other: 10 reasons why Modi should become PM, followed by scathing article why Modi should not become a PM

  40. Do you remember that Mall attack in Kenya?
There was a TOI article on it, i don't remember the exact content but the gist is - it highlighted the Jain community's contribution of a couple of hospitals which treated the injured (nothing against the Jains here, they are exemplary citizens of India like the Sikhs).
But if i remember correctly it also mentioned that the city/kenya had 'x' Jains and 'y' hindus.
At the time it seemed odd to me why in a terror attack in Africa Indians should be categorized as "Hindus" and "Jains", but now with the Jains being accorded a minority status the strategy seems clear.
You probably would be able to provide a more accurate report.

    1. I think it is an attempt to counter the term 'minority appeasement'.

  41. A wonderful opportunity presented itself today. TOI annual subscription for the year ended today. Freedom from TOI on Republic Day.

  42. Friends, That is right TOI does everything for Money. I too subscribe TOI and ET with subscription offer.I never open TOI and just see stock pages of ET. Whenever I go to Hotels or Air Port I collect Free copies of TOI and ET.Never read TOI just stack it for selling it to my raddiwala. I get much more than my subscription amount. Plus in the process saving some gullible readers from getting a copy. I urge readers to adopt above tactics. Nationalist should never giveany Ad to TOI GROUP. ECONICS is the biggest weapon if nationalist of this country decide not to loose a single paisa on TOI group they will go bankrupt. Only things is that nationalists have to understand this and act accordingly. For example there are BJP govts in the states , what is the compultion in giving thestate Ads. Once this practice is adopted they will change colour in no time. Since TOI has been unleashing tirade against BJP Govt and NaM what has the BJp govt done to punish them ?

  45. Just as Ravinar has gone after TOI, he should expose Outlook some fine day. Outlook is full of hate-Modi articles. In fact, it seems it is a requirement for any author to present anti-Modi views even when the author is attacking AAP or Congress to get published in Outlook. Drunkard Vinod Mehta must be behind that requirement.

  46. Again a very good timely article by Ravinar. You have expressed our feelings and anger.

TOI's height of scandalous reporting, obnoxious of all I feel, is the FAKE interview of Narendra Modi, where it was claimed Modi justified the riots aftermath Godhra massacre by quoting Newton’s third law - ”Every action has an equal and opposite reaction”.

  47. Well I cannot agree less.

I am surprised why did ToI in the note use the word "support". Is journalism about "supporting"..

Anybody can smell a rat, that ToI is justifying its "no support" stand.

Well, I have stopped reading ToI online and unsubscribed the paper long back!

  48. As regards readers comment appearing in TOI many readers have complained that their comment get deleted as offensive particularly when it is against Congress/AAP,when there is nothing that can be interpreted as abusive, Whereas worst abuses hurled at Modi does not receive that treatment. And TOI never give reason why it is treated as offensive when asked.
