Dog Day Morning

The robbery should have taken 10 minutes. 4 hours later, the bank was like a circus sideshow. 8 hours later, it was the hottest thing on live T.V. 12 hours later, it was all history. And it's all true...

That’s the tag line from the movie “Dog day afternoon”, a comic tragedy. Three men decide to rob a bank, one quits before starting and the other two find out the bank hardly has any money. One terrible situation follows another as it becomes a circus on Live TV. The Romans considered the star Sirius to bring about dog day afternoons in summer when people get edgy, seats are hot and things go haywire. But hey, we can beat the Romans. Our circus started in the morning on April 17 with two events. First it was Sanjay Dutt getting a one-month extension to go to jail, the other was a bomb blast in Bangalore and both happened within minutes of each other around 10.30am.

While friends and supporters of Sanjay Dutt (SD) have small reason to cheer, the SC decision to allow him another month to surrender is a bad precedent and damages the cause of justice. SD was not an accused when the SC held him guilty on his appeal of the conviction in the 1993 Bombay blasts, he was already a convict. His lawyer’s argument for seeking a 6-month extension was purely on “mercy and humanitarian” grounds and not any legal ground. SD had 20 years of freedom since his crime (except the 18 months he spent in jail) to travel anywhere, make all the movies, make all the money. And now he wanted 6 months to surrender because he has a few unfinished movies, producers have around 300 crores invested in those movies and many would suffer. Absurd! If the SC didn’t find any legal argument it is indeed surprising why it gave him a one-month extension to surrender. Why he was previously given four weeks to surrender after the judgement itself is a mystery.

One of the biggest messages that the SC needed to send out to Bollywood, political parties and corporate bodies was: Do not invest in criminals and convicts. It failed to do so. It is routine for our media to glorify criminals and convicts from the super-rich category. The SC decision gives them hope and belief that the super-rich can get away by hiring the best lawyers. By denying SD any extension the SC would have sent out a stern message to many that if they invest in criminals they too will pay the price. It has now opened the doors for other convicts like Salman Khan who carry huge investments who will now seek extensions upon extensions because crores are riding on them. There are other “private citizens” who are busy writing pardon petitions for them. In short, the Indian justice system is merciful to the rich and powerful. In contrast, Tiger Woods lost many sponsorship deals because of his multiple affairs even though there was nothing illegal and he wasn’t a convict. Let’s not forget, Sanjay Dutt even wanted to contest elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Crime pays in India! Not having found luck then, he had to join Congress. Naturally!

After the tragic Boston blasts during the Marathon on April 16 when Barack Obama said “… they will face the full weight of justice” one can imagine what that really means in American terms. We also know now what the weight of justice in Indian terms means. We have a system where convicted terrorists are protected by State resolutions, there are specialists in mercy petitions and there are State ministers who protest the sentence. The worst part is there are states who honour convicted killers with memorials. The circus around Sanjay Dutt was interrupted (luckily for our media) only because of another event that would lead to a bigger circus on TV, the Bangalore blasts near the BJP office. The previous night Rajdeep Sardesai was comparing the American response to the Boston blasts and the reporting of the incident and was wondering if there could be lessons learnt. In less than 24 hours his own channel would turn terror into a comic circus. That’s CNN-IBN for you.

The TV channels must have picked up the Bangalore blast story from Twitter and must have been upset to interrupt the SD story. All of them started with an “LPG cylinder blast” in a car. The CNN-IBN reporter first said “no casualties, no one injured”. An hour later the same channel reported “cause of blast unknown”. After every channel had spun some stupid theory of the blast the CNN-IBN anchor (Shreya Dhondiyal) had to directly caution her own reporter with the advice “please refrain from speculation”. If justice turned into comedy trust our TV channels to turn even a terror attack into comedy. Without the slightest confirmation they kept stating an LPG cylinder in a car had exploded. They had no idea if anyone was injured. They had not even spoken to any eye-witnesses as they were reported. Welcome to Dog day morning!

Let us not spare the policemen and the politicians who are always in a great hurry to give out sound-bites as if their bladders were about to burst. It speaks very poorly of our police when they start talking to media without clear information. Talking to the media in such a situation should be the last priority for policemen. It not only adds to mindless speculation but to the circus on TV. And there’s the junior Home Minister saying “don’t politicise” but he doesn’t know his own party too well. His colleague beat him to it by claiming the blast will benefit the BJP in the upcoming elections since it was to the BJP office. Before you know it, if any suspects are rounded up, the “Social Genius” will be writing about how “innocent Muslims” are being harassed by the police. There will be another round of “Terror has no religion” nonsense from the politicians from all parties. If this continued through into Dog day afternoon, can it stop from turning into a major circus during prime time TV? We are lucky!

The biggest circus in the country surely has to be on the Arnab Goswami show on TimesNow. With 10 panellists being used as acrobats and Arnab playing ringleader it is now the best circus in the country. After every terror attack there is usually someone from J&K to play victim and protest the conviction and hanging of Afzal Guru. While lamenting the inaction against terrorism Dr. Subramanian Swamy suggested bombing of terrorist camps in POK and immediately the guy from National Conference (some Mr.Baig) immediately protests and says “they are our brothers”. Really? People in terrorist camps are brothers for the NC? I am starting to believe this Baig is indeed speaking the truth. I’m sure in some corner of the world the terrorists and their handlers are watching Arnab’s shows and those on other channels and laughing about how stupid the response to terrorism is. It’s a lesson long learned that Media, Politicians and crime-investigation don’t go together.

Rajdeep Sardesai tweeted early morning on April 17 that he was dipping good old Glucose biscuits in tea for breakfast. Well, those biscuits do go limp having gone through the heat treatment but Rajdeep surely must have found a great news-day with Sanjay Dutt and the Bangalore blast with his channel leading from the front. The biscuits may have gone limp but the Dog day morning must have more than made up.

    1. I have lost my faith in most of the mainstream media, which is paid news media of Congress. The only news media I believe in are

  2. The media angle apart, hats off to the terror outfits for their non partisan outlook as far as the choice of bombing venues are considered. They make no difference between a BJP ruled or UPA ruled states. While one is a sworn enemy for them and the other a bedmate, they are totally non partisan in this venture. However they still feel that it is a safer bet in UPA ruled states from the view point of lax investigation driven by vote bank considerations. That accounts for the pre ponderence of terror incidents in UPA states. The only time they bombed Gujarat in 2008 many of the skeletons fell out in the investigations that followed.Even some terror suspects in Kerala were exposed.Of what avail is the appeasement of the UPA if they do not receive any kind of consideration in the choice of the bomb venues? This alone is enough for the pseudo seculars to learn how ungrateful these ROP(religion of peace) food soldiers are. The MSM would so well to bring out a study on these venues vis a vis the benign KhanCHris ruled states vs others and then establish an ungratefulness quotient of jihadis.

  3. Worst coverage is done by Indian...No Sensible Reporting...and calling crooks on show wh will tell us terrorists are ur brothers and we have given full freedom t rape our country and kill innocent people.......In the speech of president after boston blast..They said "Today we are No Republicans & Democrats we are Just Americans",,Here one Khangressi stooge Shakil Ahmed trying to politicize this issue..

Regarding SC it was ery shameful dicision and it will haunt us for many more years..

Anyway here we have private citizens like Kajtu on Run who will make sure every conicted Rich/powerful criminal should get pardon... No Voices for inncoent people lke Pragya Thakur who still Rooting in Jail for last 4 years..No evidence ..No charge sheet..She is suffering from cancer too....If she was Muslims mark my word from Media to NGO to Private citizen every 1 would be haunting Govt..to free her..But she is Poor Hindu so No voice...

What we can tell about media..they call a prson like yasin malik as moderate sepratist who himself admit that he killed 4 Air Force soldier..& killed Kashmiri Hindus...share Dais with Hafiz syed..and he is an regular face on TV channel like Ndtv..WTF

  4. All the politicization of the terror act was done by Congress with that Shakeel Ahmed's tweet. Just to make sure that congress alone doesn't get thrashed for this insensitive tweet unnecessarily BJP was being drawn into it. I was referring to Rajdeep's show yesterday night in which he said BJP also politicizing the terror act by saying "BJP workers were the target". My question to Old Monk is if the bomb blasts happen infront of BJP office wud the target be Congress workers?? Of course it is BJP workers. Its not politicizing its just stating facts.

Also there was a sense of advice to BJP by Old Monk that BJP should not reply to Shakeel Ahmed's tweet as it would mean politicizing. Again Mr.Sardesai if I make a statement saying "Media would like more and more such terrorist acts to happen as it wud increase their TRP and in turn revenues" would Mr. Sardesai keep quiet? without defending himself and his channel??? In my honest opinion the blame of politicization of terror act should completely be on congress because if they had not started it BJP wud not have responded.

  7. Excellent critique! It's appalling how celebrities in this country can get away with anything.
However, it would have been great if you would have mentioned that no such extra time was given to Zaibunnissa, who was also accused and tried under TADA. It has been told that she was not even aware that her house was used to transfer weapons. But no such lenience was given to her. Not sure if this was because she was a poor lady without high profile connections.

  8. Deliberate Intentional Conspiracy of Silence by the MSM working out for the 'ConGotra' in case of Sadhvi Pragya. There are reports in local newspapers that she is suffering from Cancer too probably and is in a critical condition currently. In her case she has been in jail for 5 years without a case made out. Why this selective Color Blind Amnesia of MSM? Another imp point as soon as SC decided to reopen 84 cases MSM started full cycle on 2002 by peddling lies by colluding with PSPO-Khaitan. Headlines Today is a new entrant in the 'ConGotri'.

  9. First Cylinder Blast... Then they termed it as "Low Intensity Blast" and accompanying a photo that shows a Police Van, couple of Cars, couple of Two-Wheelers are charred and an area of more than 30 X 30 has the remains of that blast. That's Low Intensity for them... And I didn't see any statement from either PMO or PM either... Life in an Indian City is Inferior compared to the Life in Boston for them...

And, I am damn sure, Congress will come to Power inspite of all these... Rather I should say, BJP will get more or less same seats as that of last year...

    It hardly dents anything...

  12. In between 12 to 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a lady reporter of NDTV on the spot was reporting that her sources in the police say that this bomb blast could be "NATAK"/drama and was suggesting that this blast could be the handiwork of BJP. By around 11:52 Shakeel Ahamad Tweets. Exactly after that time the NDTV started reporting that blast could be NATAK. Do they need any further proof of collusion? Or do they want to claim it is a coincidence? If they claim that they adhere to high standards of journalism at least sack that lowly placed reporter who was reporting from Banglore and declare this on your TV. Make a 9.00 O'clcok discussion/debate on it..I hope this will be much much easier than sacking your so called celebrities like Barka Dutt and other bimbos.

  13. sir, in response to your post, i have a few points to make and therefore my response might get a touch lengthy.
firstly, i dont know how is "humanitarian grounds" defined. SD does not have an ailing mother or father, his daughter is not getting married besides, he himself looks at the top of his health so what are these humanitarian grounds ?? lets bluntly put, SD being a superstar is now not in a mood to surrender and therefore he won't.
secondly, agreed that a lot of money is riding on him. but in 4 weeks time what difference does it make to the status of his unfinished projects ?? i would recommend, after 4 weeks there should be a 2/3 member committee and examine his last 4 weeks logbook and assess the percentage of completeness of his unfinished projects. if found below 50%, his sentence should be further extended by an year for fooling the courts.
yesterday, a teen crushed a 2 yr old under his SUV (this point isn't out of context). the teen is a son of NCP leader. being a juvenile, he obviously does not have a valid driving licence. the kid is already out on bail and by all probability will never face the judicial system or process. now somebody has to be held accountable for a loss of life. and it surely has to be the guardians / parents who let that kid get the keys to that vehicle. i for one have always believed, crime committed at any age should come to regular courts and the magistrate / judge should at his discretion decide (depending the nature of the case and its merits) whether the case should be forwarded to juvenile courts or not.
its high time that our judicial system sent a loud and clear message that law really delivers justice with its eyes closed or else having the bulkiest constitution in the world sounds more like a joke to me.
about media, lesser talked the better.
sir, i have already placed my order for the book and am anxiously awaiting its delivery. i sincerely hope that this book is just the first one and there are many more to come. i pray for its roaring success and wish you success in all your future ventures.
    regards.

    1. Rishi...I agree with you about Sanjay Dutt and son of a NCP leader.

Has anybody observed the Tilak Sanjay Dutt applied on his forehead during that famous press conference, where he broke down on his sister's shoulder, looks like V. What is it this V for ? (Victory?) Is there any custom in Hindus/Muslims which I am unaware of, where you put tilak in V form?

  19. Looking at some of the actions of Supreme Court of India, one could not avoid coming to one of the conclusion
    1)It is fully corrupt
2)It has lost its common sense
3)It has no ability to think

  22. For our hindi audience I tried Google translate on this blog - translation was so so and more flat than effective. Ravinaar could make blogs that translates to more flowing hindi (and other languages as well) and not techno-legalese-orthodox so the audience can take part from pan India diatribe on the focused discussion here. Hope the twitter also been multilingual so that vox-populi can be reverberated more in current Indian situation. KSibal should not underestimate the force of opinions.
