Fekulogy By NDTV & Headlines Today

One of the most interesting developments of the last few days of Narendra Modi speeches at multiple events is that the MSM has run out of fire. NDTV, Headlines Today, CNN-IBN found that the battle on Social Media and Twitter was far more exciting than the silly debates on their channels. Needless to say, many in the MSM were quite upset that #PappuCII had trended during and after Rahul Gandhi’s speech at CII on April 4. The Pappu trend was covered internationally and each journal and news outlet explained what the term meant. In short, RahulG as “Pappu” was being referred to as a naïve, dumb kid. Well, considering his speech and interaction at CII it wasn’t quite off the mark. Naturally, channels like NDTV and Congress supporters were thirsting for revenge and wanted desperately to similarly trend the Modi speeches in a negative fashion.

Narendra Modi’s speeches themselves were largely on expected lines. There was great oratory, facts, wit and sarcasm. It started with the women’s wing of FICCI, then an interaction at the ThinkIndia event at CNN-IBN on April 8 and then another one at Kolkata on April 9. Minutes after the Kolkata event ended, NDTV jumped for joy and reported #Feku was still trending on top. This #Feku hashtag was supposedly the Congress response to #PappuCII as our media would have you believe. So Headlines Today, NDTV and some newspaper outlets were indulging in the same predictable LIES again. Unable to come up with anything substantial against Modi’s speeches, except the usual suspects singing the 2002 song, the media was thrilled with the #Feku tag. Headlines Today reported “Congress draws first blood” in Twitter battle and then headlined “Feku trumps ModiStormsFICC”. The hashtag #ModiStormsFICCI started with a tweet by me just before the start of Modi’s speech at FICCI. It’s not clear who created the #Feku tag as everyone was using it, including Congress and BJP supporters.

Now, here’s the problem: Both #PappuCII and #ModiStormsFICCI are very clear hashtags and the reference to the person concerned is not ambiguous. In contrast, the #Feku tag is a very generic tag that can be used by anyone to target anyone but the media went around lying that the #Feku tag was created by Congress to target Modi when facts do not support such a contention. Take a look at this tweet from Pawan Durani at 3.00pm on April 8, which is just a while after the FICCI event:

Notice carefully, that all the TOP tweets at that point of time were using #Feku for Rahul Gandhi and not Modi. But yes, the Congress supporters were also using #Feku to target Modi. As a consequence of both sides using the same hashtag it became the top trend. There wasn’t any question of Congress drawing first blood or #Feku trumping #ModiStormsFICCI. If only Congress supporters had used #Feku there is hardly any doubt it would not have been the top trend. It is because the supporters of both Congress and BJP were using the tag that it became the top trend. In fact, in the later part of the day on April 8 it was the BJP supporters who had hijacked the tag and most of the tweets with #Feku were by them.

What is laughable is that TV news channels are now watching Twitter battles and that is surely a good sign for social media regardless of which political group one supports. As is the tradition with NDTV, the lies continued and in their Social Network programme on April 8 the anchor was desperately trying to suggest there was a battle between #Feku and #Pappu. That was hardly the case and as @Surnell points out, both tags were being used interchangeably as substitutes. Moreover, Pappu wasn’t used for just the CII event, RahulG is frequently referred to by that name. So once again NDTV was reporting on a battle without the slightest bit of fact-check. Well, I guess fact-check is not in their DNA when their reporting comes to Congress.

The single most tweeted and re-tweeted tweet With #ModiStormsFICCI on April 8 was one that I had posted in a sarcastic reference to RahulG’s “man on a horse” comment from CII. The CNN-IBN screen grab shows the tweet was RTd 458 times. By afternoon of April 9 the tweet was already RTd almost 600 times. So the battle between #Feku and #Pappu is a fake one that NDTV reported. To add to that Rahul Kanwal also spent an entire primetime session on the fake battle between #Feku and #ModiStormsFICCI. Kanwal was ecstatic that some Congress hashtag had beaten the other tag when that was hardly the case. A successful hashtag on Twitter usually has a direct reference to the target. #PappuCII had no ambiguity on who the beneficiary of the tag was. #ModiStormsFICCI had no ambiguity about the beneficiary. So for Rahul Kanwal to claim that #Feku had a clear target or beneficiary reflects his ignorance about Twitter and hashtags.

Neither NDTV nor Headlines Today could manage to poke any holes in Modi’s speeches. Some female media anchors and panellists were woefully picking on nonsense like women being called “Ma or behen”. Such frivolous crap is all they could come up with. In contrast, the audience at FICCI, at ThinkIndia and Kolkata were thrilled by the interaction, so were many other observers in the media. So when they couldn’t find any genuine criticism to hurl at Modi the news channels and newspapers like Indian Express turned to imaginary Congress victories on Twitter. More than Tweeple from either side it was the news channels who indulged in a lot more “Fekulogy” as I call it. But I derive immense satisfaction from the fact that the social media is now dictating the discourse to MSM. That is for everyone to celebrate, regardless of political persuasions. The MSM is already famous for “Fekulogy”, they just fell into a new trap of the art.

  1. Yay!!! To be fair! NDTV on The Social Network did mention (in the passing) that #Feku got hijacked (if started by CONgress Fanboys) because most of the top tweets were complimentary to NaMo and critical of Pappu err... Rahul Gandhi. And Indian Express were today continuing to tweet with Feku tag (Problem when they don't know how it works) All tweets related to the Kolkatta Address of Narendra Modi (potshots at UPA, Jabs at Media, Ridiculing of MMS) were tweeted with that hashtag, ending up with an impression that they were bashing UPA and Rahul Gandhi
MSM simply lost the war of intellectuals. Proves that it doesn't take much to be everything on MSM but it takes everything to be something on SM

  3. An excellent piece as always. I missed all the fun yesterday. Was wondering what is this Vs between #Feku & #pappuCII as my TL had all #Feku targetting #Pappu... Only by midnight I understood that it was perhaps a Hashtag created by our @jhaSanjay which as usual bomeranged on Cong.

  7. It does happen..when a Pappu has holi's water balloon in his hand it is often used against him...and over that..he has to face "bura na maano holi hain" sarcasm too

//SM pe Holi ke paimaane and maayane badal gaye hain..isliye sambhal ke holi khelna!! ..choli bheegne ka hi nahin ...gayab hone ka bhi dar hain :)

  8. These journoz supposed to hv undergone courses on mass communication technique and in turn understating mass communication .. so isnt it shameful on these journo not to understand the same? shudnt it b proper for them to give away any govt schemes benefits they are using or resign from the job n come back relearning the mass communications for benefit of the indians?

  9. ranjana kumari the feminist dimwit who objected to namo using the maa and behan form of addressing the mainly female audience will go mad with withdrawal symptoms if she is neglected by tv channels even for a few days. she is probably paid for the nonsense she spews.she however dances to the piper's tunes in a manner so maniacal that even they may feel a wee bit wary of calling her for repeat performances.

  10. thanks mediacrooks for the Feukology , SM is setting agenda for MSM, thats a very huge transformation already. BJP should follow Modi policy for media. In trying 2 target Modi , MSM is loosing all credibility. Totally shameless. Modi mentioned Profession and TRP binds them to such actions and they cannot be liberated from the same. Not 1 journo questioned this accusation. SM has no financial obligations to the First family. Its amazing to the level these journos stoop to, Modi made a special mention of Rajdeep who is interested in the Human Rights topic. Having missed twitter debates for 2 days and seeing #Feku , i thought it was #Pappu as it sounded a lot like Beku in tamil (fool). thanks to jhaSanjay , RaGa has #Feku name as well. May your power grow

  12. Since few days even I ve seen a sudden change in attitude of HEADLINES TODAY... from reporting genuine news it seems biased towards ruling party. Possibly must have got instructions from I&B ministry. Rahul Kanwal, i considered him to be a direct no nonsense editor.. now even his credibility seems questionable, at least in my views. Everybody is going KAJU way...

  13. The lesson for us NaMo supporters is, we need to use an unambiguous hashtag next time for RahulPappu and not indulge CONparty in their hashtags - The MSM will spin it out of control and those inactive on SM may be led to believe that Modi is losing the war on SM

  14. I saw the bit on NDTV when they were taking womens reaction to Modi's speech @ FICCI, the girls from Chennai were very excited and said they loved it! Next was some lady from Kolkata to be interviewed. Now what will the NDTV anchor do, can't take more Modi praise! But as if they have by-hearted how to tackle all Modi related stuff, the anchor asks 'Given the fact that Modi has in the past used the 50 cr girl friend remarks for a woman, how do u see his speech today'?
In spite of this leading the comment from the Kolkata lady was still centre-positive!

But honestly, the MSM is being haunted by the Modi ghost, they will go to any length!

  15. So Mainstream Media accepts the Possible(They Don't Have any proof for it) Modi Brigade but they are yet to Speak on Congress Brigade which Congress Announced on every National News Channel. that's Hilarious lol
Even Sanjay Jha was screaming from his own Twitter account about creating #Feku trend.
So why no bashing by any journalist here?
Before every speech of Modi just see how this Journalists like Rajdeep, Sagarika, Ashutosh runs away ranting about the Modi Army after gets trapped in their own web but they turn their backs when Congress is out there with their 100 Crore Social Media Hooligans Army.
    Sheer disregard by the Media..

  17. There is one more lie from MSM caught blue handed. Sagarika Ghose caught lying on Twitter about Narendra Modi again. This shameless woman has no limits of shamelessness. How can CNN IBN still keep her in such a top position. Probably, that is their standard.

  18. Hash-tag #Feku was trending more because of Modi supporters. They all did this mistake. Media person who looking from outside without going into tweets would obviously think all tweets are anti Modi.
To suppress such hash-tag tweeting the same hash-tag with counter arguments is not a good tactic as it ultimately help those who started it, because it remains there.
Rather then someone should have started counter hash-tag like #FakeGandhis because the very same day WikiLeaks revealed Rajiv Gandhi as middleman with swedish firm.
Ones #FakeGandhis would come on trends list #Feku wd be nullified immediately.

  19. It is true that the MSM is filled with the rogue elements but the question is why does the BJP send sheepish persons to defend them like Anupam Kher's wife (forgotten her name)she only make faces,Shina NC,Jaynarayan Vyas,Chandan Mitra etc..The BJP when came to power in the late 90s, their aggressive spokespersons like Pramod Mahajan,Sushma,Jaitley,Uma Bharti,Vinay Katiyar,Venkaiah Naidu etc. had a big role in swaying the public mood.

    1. Yes, top brass of BJP is all tired..that's why Rajnath filled its team with working and aggressive lot like smriti, amit, madhu...etc to be led by ...u know NaMo ..soon.

    2. Agree Kiran Kher (Anupam's wife) drama looks bad. You should understand the strategy of MSM. They call modest spokespersons from BJP. Or those who easily get provoked like Chandan. Also I do not see any value of Sushma etc sharing the panel with crooks like Sanjay Jha, Khusboo, Dilip Cherian etc.

  20. even after 100cr project congress is finding very hard on social media how can it succeed in trending even i have used feku hash tag for rahul then how is this victory for congress.if u observe keenly tweets of any congress supporter u can come to conclusion that they have no facts but full of lies

  21. This article focuses too much on twitter wars. You are doing a greater service by exposing the crooks to get drawn into this. Many who dont follow twitter may not quite understand the context of it all.
That the MSM is shallow and dumb is given.. A dignified criticism with focus on bigger lies they peddle has brought mediacrooks.com so far. Their reporting on twitter wars only shows that they are hurting. Its time to ignore them now rather than react to it.

    1. @Koyel

No, it doesnt focus on Twitter wars. It focuses on the way media interprets what happens on Twitter to create perceptions. I thought anyone could have seen that.

      Delete
    2. Yes, Thats right. But from criticising the biased reporting on Gujarat riots and vendetta against Modi, this focus on Twitter hashtags and their reporting in Media didnt deserve the attention of mediacrooks.com. I am sure there are bigger stupidities to follow and for you to expose.
      My two paise.
Anyway, its your blog and you are the best judge. All the best.

  22. What is worrying though is that they started lying about what is happening on Twitter. All these MSM shows are intended to somehow project that Rahul Gandhi has been killing it on Twitter with his speeches. When the truth is however, diametrically opposite. Half-truths also so many times, like interviewing one CII guy and declaring Pappu's speech a home run!

Men of great mettle and character had to fight throughout history to get to the throne of this great nation. This is uneducated, incompetent, ignorant, over-pampered idiot from a Delhi ivy-tower is expected to get a walkover?

But, they are going as low as outrightly lying now. They seem to be banking on the ignorance/indifference of their viewers. Unless, you are willing to take 15 mins out of your day to scratch the surface, the MSM lies may just go unnoticed. Sad!
