Rahul Gandhi's Stunted Evolution

Pictures do tell a lot more than mere words. And this one does too. After a brief statement to the press on March 6 after the UP loss Rahul Gandhi walked away with his sister. So the Sarees are gone, jeans are back. Don’t have to deal with the beggars for a while. I wonder if anyone will interview Priyanka Vadra in the near future and ask her a question about one of the silliest statement from this campaign. Her frequent advice to voters was if they had a Congress govt in UP they too would benefit from the Centre’s schemes. She’s supposed to be more intelligent and articulate than RG but that question reveals a very unintelligent mind. As for all the statements, theatre and ‘angry man’ approach by RG, reams will be written. Never mind all that.RG is sinking his party pretty much like another man has sunk his airline.

Now from November 14, 2011 till about mid February 2012 the usual suspects in the media, like NDTV, CNN-IBN, TimesNow and their cousins in the Hindi media more or less reported only one campaigner in UP. If it wasn’t RG “coming of age” on CNN-IBN it was how “RG had evolved” on NDTV, that was the script. That guy Akhilesh Yadav was around only in some stray clips here and there. Then suddenly after around the 3rd or 4th phase of voting all the Editors and Bureau Chiefs and reporters were doing exclusives with Akhilesh Yadav, in his flights, in his bus and even in his home. Some featured even his kids on the bus. What changed? I suspect only one thing: that by mid-February the exit polls which were held back the channels must have clearly indicated Samajwadi Party was winning handsomely and Akhilesh Yadav was becoming a hero. Rajdeep Sardesai finally went on a flight with Akhilesh to interview him. Even CNN-IBN and StarNews got that part right. So quickly increased focus on AY. RG was now an also-ran. Akhilesh also gave quite a few one on one interviews which RG seems either incapable of or deems it unnecessary.

Exactly at the same time as the media’s exit polls started showing the real picture RG called for a secret, off the record meet of editors of various media outlets (February 18). Your guess is as good as mine that some of these editors would have told him what their exit polls are showing. They may not have been permitted to make it public but they can certainly share it in an “off the record” meet of this nature. Such is the crawling nature of our media that editors shamelessly even attended the breakfast meet. It is fair to believe that even the Congress pollsters would have given him the feedback about the SP’s better showing.

After four phases of voting Barkha Dutt even held a special programme on “How RG has evolved”, followed by a very interesting ‘Barbecue’ debate by Prannoy Roy and then again another programme for the ‘Muslims of UP’ by Barkha. The muslim debate was particularly in the light of great announcements for them by RG, Salman Khurshid and Digvijay Singh. It is one thing for Digvijay to say “I am responsible” and also for RG to say “I am responsible” but the question really is what are they going to do next? If RG really wants to “evolve” as a leader he will need to take some decisions. It doesn’t help to be surrounded by the likes of Digvijay, Salman or Beni Prasad who are capable of undermining a campaign without external help in stupidity. RG himself needs to learn that lines like “elephant eats money” maybe humorous a couple of times but spoken too often become a stale joke that people stop buying. Another serious lesson that these guys need to learn is “minority appeasement” doesn’t work either. Like others, muslims too refuse to be fooled anymore. He can also learn that media doesn’t help win elections.

RG could even learn from a part-time politician, Vijay Mallya. He sunk an airline much as RG is sinking his party. There is an interesting article by M.J. Akbar in India Today (Earth on Earth) about how Mallya sunk his airline by focusing on all the other things. That he still expects banks to bail him out. There is one thing for a few ministers or party-men to be rated as non-performers but when the top leader himself is seen to be repeatedly failing then either the talent or skill for that particular business is missing. Except for the liquor business which Mallya ‘inherited’ he has nothing but a string of failures to his credit. At the moment all signs are that Kingfisher may not be revived. There is interesting blog about the history of Kingfisher’s murky dealings which have meticulously chronicled by @TheKaipullai titled ‘The Curious Case of Vijay Mallya and his bailout. And one more scam!’. Perhaps in another country Mallya would have been kicked out of the business by his board. But much like the Congress, dynasty sustains many of our business groups too. Each time he campaigns there are huge noises in the media about his having “evolved as a political leader”. His sycophants may not tell him but so far it looks like stunted evolution.

  1. As usual, fantastic......I dont know whether it is sad, pathetic, or simply stubborness to read the writing on the wall.. Perhaps the most urgent and imperative force guiding this intellectually challenged family is the fear of retribution on the various corruption charges that are looming large over them. So much so that ALL of them INCLUDING the little ones have been aired out and paraded...with no impact. Desparation is writ large...with hardly any recourse....

    My little two bits in a lighter vein :) Zer0 Her0! Http://ratiparker.blogspot.com :-}

  2. Any administration leading to downfall means the primary cause is the touts for the same who will do a whopping homework to propitiate their mentors but will be a quick fix arrangement. After emergency, Indira too believed her touts and declared general election to bite the dust. Therefore, the first and foremost should be to distance the touts; precisely including the paid media both print and electronic in the first place.

Second is they should invite critical analysis as Jawahar used to only then they will know the real mindset of the common. But modern day politicians are far from the two basic tenet and fall brittle to the cookies to face the music.

Coming to the corruption the only panacea is to attach all the properties once they leave their public life except the dole for the services rendered and their progeny should eke out their living of their own.

Will it happen, because the modern day politicians amass wealth adequate for generations together under the banner of contesting under the umbrella to serve the common but behave like cheats?

  3. This pro-BJP blog is so predictable. Its line of vision doesn't extend beyond the Congress. Sure RG was a flop, but so was the BJP. It even lost Ayodhya.

"...Sure RG was a flog, but so was the BJP..." BJP was never there in the scheme of things for the MSM. If it all, it was the -ve side. It was only the Congress sycophancy that was on display in the MSM. Hence what we are discussing is the rampant bias that MSM has for RG and his Congress. If media was balanced in it views, this situation wouldn't have arrived at all.

    2. Can I ask you about your IQ level , dumb dude ? If you feel the blog is pro BJP, though it is not . It is trying to expose the media's misdeeds and not taking any wrong stand against Congress. It is the ideology which differs , nothing personal here .

If you feel offended and your IQ level is average , you should stop visiting this page, instead of advising .

You know it is just this reason that your advocate Kapil Sibal was trying to force the censorship on internet media , which says the truth about your Congress Godfather and Godmother.

  4. You really need to be praised for having the patience to watch all the stupid, pseudo-intellectual debates on TV with concentration and write about it. How come you are still sane I wonder...

  5. The author has not mentioned BJP even once and here we have an enlightened soul calling the article pro-BJP. Pathetic comprehension skills I'll say.

Also the article is not about congress but the media's bias towards the congress. And I commend the author for bringing this bias to light.

But I still can't understand why the f*** are you talking about BJP. Did the article ever mention that the BJP was a huge hit in the UP polls.

I don't know if the author has a pro-BJP bias but you sure have a pro-Kangress bias.

  6. One of the unfortunate lessons from UP poll is that, whether it's SP winning or Congress losing, "minorities" are still in full control of the future of India, like they have been. since 14th century. It is abundantly clear that Muslims of UP have put SP into the driving seat, and hence SP'a agenda will continue to be communal and anti- Hindu, regardless of Khangress losing the election. Apart from Khangress, there is a lesson for Hindus, a statistical majority in India, from UP elections.

We need to look into data to arrive at that conclusion. I am not sure if Muslim votes can be so decisive all across the state. But if it so, then the signs are ominous; this country is headed for disaster.

    3. Surely , matter to be debated neatly . Not a matter which can be ignored .

Hope Ravinar would take up the issue in the forthcoming issue and get feedback .

  7. You are right. There is no other reason why a post poll survey was telecast-ed a day before election results were announced. The expenditure does not tally. This proves that exit pollsters are taking money from political parties to do their field work.I guess its perfectly justifiable to ban pre poll and post poll surveys because these people are capable of manipulating people's opinion. One should not forget that every single pollster got it wrong in TN

  9. Excellent read. The signs are omuinous. Like his grand mother, who was surrounded by spin masters (R K Dhawan & co.) RG is also aided by a bunch of sycophants, who will ensure Congress downfall. And, did you notice that through out the week leading up to the election results and a couple of days thereafter, there was no statement or press release from the PM. After all, he is Congress Party’s tallest leader at the centre and should comment on the election results. Even the media did not bother to snatch a few sound bites from either the PM or any of his chief lieutenants. It was only Gandhi Parivar that the media was following. As if he did not exist!! Poor MS has been completely marginalized!!!
As for Vijay Mallya, he is Corporate India’s Rakhi Sawant. Need I say more?

  10. Sir, I don’t entirely agree with this. RG or for the matter Sonia or Priyanka cannot sink the party. Reason, the name Congress is bigger than these characters, looks like and a socially acceptable ‘Yes to Vote’ for many in the country since pre-independence. Post-2004, the elections were actually won by this ‘congress’ factor and partially by irrelevant and divided opposition and certainly the family could not have been the reason.

It’s just a matter of right matrimony for Sonia and a perfect sperm-count for RG to have emerged proud owners of this oldest political party. And what have we got with their advisers in the name of senior pros knit together conveniently by the family ? PC who is still under court-room jurisdiction for his victory in his own constituency, MMS who’s hard-to-locate resident of some far eastern bylane in Assam, Pranabda who’s still coming to terms with his own equation with Bengali-intellects and English, Kapil Sibal, who has come to do business more than social service thru’ government and a ‘liar’ to boot…. All these guys need identity of their own and hence becoming a loud-speak for this lucky family remains of Rajiv Gandhi.

So my contention is minus the party name as Congress, this think-tanks and the remains including the angry-young-man RG go for a six, out-of-stadium, out-of-country as well. No amount of RG’s childishness, Priyanka’s lack of intellect and Sonia’s love for Italy can bring down the party. It’s time somebody goes to question the ownership deed, instead!

  11. Funny, I read a response saying it is a Pro-BJP blog! How I wish it were (just to lend credence to that lost soul). Great work as usual. I loved the comparison of CONgress (Rahul) to Kingfisher (Vijay Mallya) - Both mismanaged but expect a bail out absolutely free of cost and with no commitment.
For me the defining moment and unforgettable image was Priyanka Vadra parading her children bringing forth scenes I witness at traffic signals. RahulG and family appear more "beggar" that he spoke about UP than the real beggars there.
Lovely read and keep it coming.

  13. Still How many years will this Gandhi Family fool Us??
Even a school child can challenge RG's intelligence.
With so much of Power, He could have changed the Face of Indian politics by sticking to root issues like Education,Health,Development but Instead RG prefers to go by the Usual Gandhi family way..that is dirty caste politics. Congress party wants the Indians to be uneducated and poor so that everytime they cud win elections by wooing the uneducated people. The so called secular party always talks about caste issues and never on development.
