PM Manmohan Singh called for an emergency all-party meet today to discuss the issue of Koran burning by a US church. Concerned at how deeply disgraceful such an act was and how deeply it hurts the muslims of India, the PM urgently convened this meeting.
UPA and Left party leaders strongly advocated action against the Sangh Parivar who have largely maintained a studied silence on the issue. Cabinet ministers sharply criticised the BJP for not speaking out clearly enough against the proposed Koran-burning and blamed the Saffron groups to be behind this move of Koran-burning. The saffron brigade was also accused of funding a relatively unknown church in a relatively unknown town in Florida for this proposed act.
Reporting on this meeting several channels like NDTV, CNN-IBN and Times Now have reported that muslim leaders have threatened to burn copies of the Bhagwad Gita if the proposed burning of the Koran was not stopped. When pointed out that Hindus had nothing to do with this particular event of Koran-burning the home-minister, P. Chidambaram, reportedly stated that anything that offends muslims has to have a saffron hand behind it. He reiterated that he will coin a new phrase for these saffron terrorists and call them "Koran-Burners" Chidambaram was also reported to have made the following comments in the media:
"We condemn the action of the pastor. It is totally unbecoming of anyone who claims to be a man of religion. It is obviously calculated to increase bitterness and strife between different religious groups" He further stated that this is clearly intended to incense the followers of the "religion of peace".
When asked if his own remark about "saffron terror" would not have offended Hindus, Chidambaram responded by stating "That is OK, the Hindus don't have the guts to issue death threats to me"...Asked if it was OK for the death threats to be issued to the pastor who is going to burn the Koran, the home minister responded in his smooth style stating "Anyone offending muslims deserves to die"...
