A Still-Born Interview

There is a reason why a media outlet must stay clear of politicians and too much political influence. Channels like NDTV and CNN-IBN who frequently crown politicians with all kinds of awards can hardly be expected to report honestly. Their dishonesty and corruption in news reporting and analysis has been evident to almost every observer. So when Narendra Modi cancelled a planned engagement at an event involving Facebook-Newslaundry-NDTV as joint partners it did result in a hilarious catfight:

From the very beginning there seemed to be something unholy about the alliance behind the event. Naturally, many Modi supporters were dead against his appearing on NDTV since they have abused him for 12 years and still continue to do so. There are many records of this and we need not dig those up again. People are only curious as to the real reason why Modi withdrew. Some media morons in Delhi are jumping around claiming Modi is afraid of facing an interview with Madhu Trehan of NL. Well, MT is a decent journalist but certainly no terror for anyone. It’s not very hard to estimate that there are thousands of interview requests pending with Modi so this cancellation must have been a big blow to all the three media partners. Remove Modi from the event and what have you got? Here it is:

The four other participants scheduled for this event do not deserve to be in the same bracket as Modi nor can they stand shoulder to shoulder with him in terms of performance. The first one, Arvind Kejriwal, is a pathological liar who represents the very scum who have no stakes in India except getting the corrupt Congress back to power. The fact that 3 of NL’s partners are associated with him and some of them are AAP members makes his choice extremely dubious. Forget listening to this scumbag, I wouldn’t throw my old worn-out shoes at him. TheJaggi at Firstpost explains better on why this tantrum-queen needs no attention from Modi or from any politician of reasonable common sense. The pathetic nature of AAP and its leader will be evident from this message on SM:

Lalu Prasad Yadav is a convict out on bail. His only reason for being there is media loves criminals and non-performers. Akhilesh Yadav, another non-performer, is better off being paired with someone like Rahul Gandhi, who he can match his intelligence with.  Only Mamata Banerjee has some standing as a political leader but hardly a contender for anything other than deputing her party members as puppet ministers in case she is an alliance that comes to power.

There is something that people have noticed about NL. Ever since the AAP party formed a govt in Delhi, its approach and attitude to many issues and the MSM has been perceived to have undergone a change. One can measure this by the many comments on their site and also many tweets on the topic. Madhu Trehan claimed in an interview with TheNewsMinute that when the event became public there was outrage and abuse. I don’t quite agree with that. Yes, there was outrage but “abuse” is a term which is quickly resorted to by MSM folks as a first resort in a lost plot. Madhu should be careful in resorting to such terms. In a poll for “India’s Best Journalists” in 2012 Madhu was voted as one who had re-invented herself in the age of social media. That reputation is more important than being associated with a bunch of AAPTards and their agenda. The most distasteful evidence of this was an article trashing Tarun Tejpal’s victim as a “bubblegum feminist”.

One of the surprising things about this event is that it does not have a single representative of a major national party like Congress. The Congress also happens to be the ruling party and the main target of Narendra Modi. This could also be one of the reasons why Modi may have considered it unworthy to be in the company of a motley crew of non-performers, convict and a pathological liar. Maybe, Kejriwal is the default representative of Congress. Who knows! MT has stated she will explain the reasons for Modi’s withdrawal after March 10 when the event is concluded and done with.

Any media outlet has the freedom to choose the politicians it wishes to host. The choice of Lalu Prasad is an insult to people’s intelligence. But NL is not the only one, others like TimesNow and CNN-IBN too love to host this criminal for his comic value. But they should remember that politicians too have the freedom to choose and withdraw from events that do not reflect political realities accurately in their title and theme. It is for this reason that I believe Modi has done the right thing in withdrawing from this event. He may, of course, choose to reveal or not reveal his reasons; that’s his privilege. But like I stated in my earlier post on this topic, without Modi this is a still-born event.  

Saving Tejpal

The World Cup tournament is about to start and one of your best players is seriously injured. It can do two things. One: deflate the morale of your team and two: instill greater confidence in your opponents. When it’s a grand player like Tarun Tejpal, with his Tehelka, you can imagine how much it would have dented the morale of Congress and our MSM. It’s a big blow not to have him and Tehelka as players in the run-up to LS elections. In this post we will just list a series of articles and shows without drawing any conclusions about “victim Tejpal”.

Slowly but surely there is an organised and co-ordinated effort in the Scotch-circuit of Delhi media to use a Dominique Strauss-Kahn like campaign to turn Tejpal into a victim. DSK is the former IMF chief who could have been a future president of France but had sexual-assault allegations against him. Turns out his alleged victim herself had a chequered past and the cases were dropped. In between, the accuser’s past was used to hound her and other cases brought against DSK were also dropped. There were even reports that DSK’s accuser may have been HIVinfected owing to her living in an apartment for “HIV only”. Last heard, France was to prosecute him for pimping charges. DSK admitted some lapses and misdeeds but claimed there was no rape and he was innocent. Sounds familiar? Inspirational? Not fully yet, because our media still hasn’t quiet managed to tar Tejpal’s victim but some are indeed trying very hard. It’s not just Indian media but also some foreign ones chipping in (all are edited excerpts in blue). Among the first was this one from Newslaundry (Feb 14):  

To begin with, I would like to establish quite clearly that I do not see you as a victim, unless it is of bubblegum feminism… Neither is my heart bleeding for Tarun Tejpal. After all, he in all his wisdom chose to hire you – and chose to travel with you in that lift… Yet, in all fairness, in the one-way fury that had been unleashed on him in response to this incident he has become the victim, not you… The space for this discussion has instead been completely hijacked by those defending the rights of “bubblegum” feminists. The kind that some articulate young women have come to represent in India – the self-indulgent, frivolous,  feverishly BBM-ing kind –who do what they want, how they want, when they want, and then righteously demand to be excused for any of its repercussions, because hey, after all they are just women… And when she finally got her head around it, she would respond with fury – want revenge from him for breaking the rules of the silly games she was used to playing… I hope you realise that in this “noble” race you have been actively complicit in the event of a man being thrown into jail – without a trial – purely on the basis of the accusation of assault. You have allowed the most ludicrous comparisons to be made between him and violent rapists.

That little burst against the “bubblegum feminist” (Self-indulgent, frivolous, BBM-ing kind) is from a lady called Nirupama Sekhri. What can I say! But it helps to know what Tejpal’s victim could have done instead of being a lowly employee, going by Nirupama’s profile that NL carries:

Cool, isn’t it? Mother of two, travelling with an Indian truck driver for 3 months around the country in trucks (which is safer than working at Tehelka), as any high school lady teacher does. Sure, many schools insist teachers to have trucking experience. She is also a teacher at a Jiddu school in Kodaikannal. These schools are very different from your regular schools. You know, more philosophy types. Bubblegum philosophy? LEARN, all you self-indulgent, frivolous, BBM-ing girls! Why can’t you go around trucks in India with a truck driver instead of seeking to be a journalist in employment with Tehelka. You should have known better. Then there’s the NYT (Feb 18) which has its own take in a report:

In a six-paragraph letter, the first official communication he has released since he was arrested in late November, Mr. Tejpal, 50, wrote that he has “viewed the relevant footage of both days whilst being ‘held’ in police custody and the footage clearly validates me.”… “The fact is, most of the officers in the crime branch know there is no case, and have said as much to me,” the letter says. His daughter, Tiya Tejpal, said in a telephone interview that she has examined stills of the footage, and that they “clearly show the intent of him and her”. “I mean, if you have a look at it, you’ll get an idea whether it was consensual,” she said… In the letter, Mr. Tejpal – put the case into the context of coming elections, calling it “an early sign of the inherent fascism of the right wing that will target its detractors in the most sinister and underhand ways, using all the government machinery at its disposal.”… “It’s a crying shame that a major party that is bidding to rule the great pluralism that is India is imbued with no tolerance of dissenters and critics, of whom I certainly am one”

Early sign of inherent fascism; sounds a lot like Sonia Gandhi, doesn’t it? So far Tejpal and his lawyers were claiming that the CCTV footage will prove he is innocent and that the “encounter” was “consensual”. This, of course, is different from the confessions Tejpal made in earlier emails and SMSes to the lady in question. So we have to be enlightened on such “Empty parlor games” by some arty-farty type called Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi; again in NYT (Feb 24):

This was to be a Sunday brunch, for an artist from Delhi. Around 30 guests appeared, a miscellany of writers, socialites, artists, publishers, venture capitalists and tag-along out-of-towners. As the afternoon wore on, though, I felt a creeping sense of unease. I overheard a middle-aged photographer offer a young model a pro bono “portfolio shoot,” and she rolled vixen eyes. A moment later, she accepted his offer, the trade of pictures for sex implicit.

So these are normal things in these circles. “She accepted his offer… for sex implicit”. Tejpal, in his drunken banter, had something similar to say to his employee about furthering her career for such small exchanges. Nice! But if all these intelligent people had their own assessment can the C5M resist doing a half-hour show on Tejpal dearest being a “victim”? So Sagarika Ghose got together a bunch of people for a stupid debate on whether Tejpal has the right to play victim (I’m sure if Congress comes to power again RahulG will also get you the “Right to Victimhood” Act passed). Defending Tejpal strongly, as he has done in the past, was Sanjoy Roy. Now this Roy is the Litterfest specialist who organises events like Jaipur Litterfest where the Tejpals, Dalrymples, Nandys gather to compare notes on… Well, make a wild guess! In the first pic above, I have added a pic of the scroll that CNN-IBN ran during the show and the bright question is “Are right wing forces targeting Tejpal because of his Tehelka work”? Seems highly probable doesn’t it? After all, the Hyatt hotel being built in Goa, those lifts, the CCTVs, the woman employee were all planned and executed by right wing forces. Err… read that as “Hindus”. And then claims of “vendetta” and that the Goa police had fabricated the case which will collapse the moment the CCTV footage is revealed. Ironically, on the same day as Sagarika’s show the CCTV footage was handed over to Tejpal’s lawyers and since then there has been no further statements or claims by them so far.

In the incestuous club of Delhi media nothing is an accident. The series of articles and shows coming up on “Tejpal the poor victim” does seem to have a background. Sitting in his sea-facing temporary home, Tejpal seems to have been busy dialling up all his saviours. Here’s what Firstpost reports:

Tip-offs from "good" journalists in the national capital led to the surprise raid of Tehelka editor-in-chief's prison cell, according to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Speaking at a public function, Parrikar alleged that Tarun Tejpal, from whom a mobile phone was allegedly recovered during a raid on 23 February, was speaking to Delhi-based journalists every morning…  "There are journalists in Delhi who reported to us that he was speaking to reporters from Delhi every morning," Parrikar said… Nine mobile phones were allegedly found in the Sada prison complex housing Tejpal during a sudden raid a few days ago. Prison officials claim that a SIM card was also found in the editor's shirt collar.

It is inevitable that as the days go by and the trial gets closer the “victimhood” for Tejpal will grow shriller. Sagarika and all her panellists agreed that the court not giving him bail was “inhuman”. The interim bail and subsequent pleas were declined by the court after extensive hearings. Surprisingly, these same poodles don’t find it inhuman when Sadhvi Pragya or Asaram or others don’t get bail. Well, Tejpal is one of their Hammamis and an important one at that. The malicious campaign against his victim has already started. We have to wait and watch and see if they can save Tejpal. 

The Surrogate Interview

For many reasons I cannot disclose many intricate details in this post but I will offer enough for readers to ponder. Surviving online with some kind of news outlet or media-watch site is a tough job. Some like Firstpost may be well-funded and have the access of Network18 to rely upon for content and distribution. Don’t know how Rediff does but it has online shopping business too. Sites like NitiCentral have to rely on limited access to news networks. Last year a satire site had to bite the dust and merge with an MSM branch to survive. Many have to make compromises that are forced entirely by their grim financial situation. You know, like the old boxing mafia in the US used to do. They fixed matches, up and comers were forced to take a dive and promising careers were killed. Here’s half a true story:

“My night. I could've taken Wilson apart that night. So what happens? He gets a title shot outdoors in the ballpark, and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palookaville. I was never no good after that night, Charley. It was like a peak you reach, and then it's downhill. It was you, Charley. You was my brother. You should've looked out for me a little bit… You should've taken care of me just a little bit instead of making me take them dives for the short-end money. You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody instead of a bum, which is what I am. Let's face it”.

"The medium is the message" said Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. If you tune into TimesNow or CNN-IBN or NDTV or an online site like Newslaundry you know pretty much what you’ll get. You know NDTV is alleged to have indulged in financial frauds and indirectly “facilitated” their IT assessment officer for “speedy disposal” (as the DLF chairman calls it). We have also seen the propaganda, plagiarism with fake videos and fake reports, fake tweets to support lobbying on some issue and even outright lies by some of them. Take a look at this:

 

So the crooks at NDTV believe “guilty by association” is legitimate news reporting. Of course, this is couched in clever trickery of not being inaccurate but the tweet by India TV exposes what the scumbags and scumbaginis at NDTV really are. They don’t miss even a remote chance to tar and malign Narendra Modi. So that’s what brings us to the question: why would Narendra Modi appear on a show in which this corrupt channel is a media partner? The answer isn’t simple. The other two associates of this event are Facebook (FB) and Newslaundry (NL). Who initiated this event is not clear to the public but based on evidence we have to assume since this is a social media event it is a Facebook event. But chances also are that the event was “concocted” in association by one or more of the partners or their PR brokers. The event is called “Candidates 2014” and is supposedly …. Well take a look at what NL said:

NL first put up a page that said (as in the first para of text) “Madhu Trehan interviews prime-ministerial front-runners”. Ha! What a scam! It included the convict Lalu Prasad who can’t even contest elections and others were Modi, Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal and Akhilesh Yadav. So people pointed out this blooper and a few hours later this was changed to “… top contenders”. Top contenders for what? The speaker’s position in the next LS? The silliness of the new title seems lost on NL. Notice that under the text it says “You can be the first to comment” and that is in the revised page. For some reason NL deleted around 90 comments that I had seen when the page was first up on February 20. They even put up a notice saying comments for the thread are closed as the pic on the left shows. If everything is clean and transparent why all this skulduggery?

Kanchan Gupta, who heads NitiCentral, put out this a tweet and stated it’s an open event and anybody can broadcast and Niti too will broadcast. That was enough to start a scramble between the advertised partners of the event and that’s where the fun part starts. Here is an exchange between KanchanG and Barkha Dutt (who else could it have been?):

So the group editor of NDTV says “from what I understand” they are exclusive broadcast partners. The last tweet above from KanchanG says he heard differently (in another tweet he mentioned from Modi’s office) that it was a FB event and that he will be broadcasting it anyway. Elsewhere, Vikram Chandra, the usually amiable guy from NDTV, had a clear indication of what anyone else broadcasting the event would tantamount to:

Okay, so VikramC says it would be piracy. FB’s also said NDTV and NL are partners in this grand event. However, press releases weren't all that clear. So let’s now get a bit more into this puzzle.

 

On being asked about this deal and why others can’t broadcast, Abhinandan Sekhri, a founder and investor in NL, has this answer as shown in the tweet. Oh yeah! “Not sponsored by anyone… tu nahi samjhega”. So according to AS it’s an NL-FB event and NDTV is the “partner”. Err… “Tu nahi samjhega”! I agree with that part. Nobody understands. AS is an AAP member and the same arrogance that runs through AAP statements runs through this guy’s dialogue too. AS is the one who actually runs NL. Everything in NL is managed by him. Madhu Trehan just does her ‘Clothesline’ once a week or so. AS is also a vendor for NDTV. He runs a firm called ‘SmallScreen’ which produces videos, animations and scripts for many clients. So, without a doubt, AS is a talented guy and the animations and sketches you see on NL mostly come from him and, evidently, his team from SmallScreen.

Like I said in the beginning, it is hard to sustain an online news or satire site in India. Madhu Trehan has often asked the question on whether they should seek sponsors or subscriptions from viewers. I don’t think the subscriptions route worked all that well. So it is likely that NL didn’t have a sustainable revenue model. Remember, this was supposed to be a media-critic and analyst. NL did that job pretty well; bringing out the hypocrisies, ironies and idiosyncrasies frequently. It also did a fine job on putting some of the media celebs on the mat in its interviews. All this was under the heady tagline “Sab ki Dhulai” (Washing everyone or thrashing everyone – depending on how you read it). But looks like they finally ran out of detergent. NL has now gone the MSM way partnering a channel with allegations of corruption and financial fraud.

The change at NL was visible about 10-15 days ago I think. Their site was down for maintenance they said and then it came up in a new avatar and design. What struck me most was a stingingly spiteful article against Tarun Tejpal’s “rape victim” on Valentine’s Day. The writer poured scorn on the victim and made out Tejpal to be the victim of her malicious campaign sort of. Cleverly, as with other MSM morons, the writer of this spiteful and hate-filled article calls Tejpal’s prey “MsTehelka-Assault-Victim”. Astonishing! Why is she Tehelka’s victim and not Tejpal’s victim? Is this the honest discourse Madhu Trehan had promised NL readers? But then Madhu was always an MSM member. Some things don’t change. The name of the author of that article? Nirupama Sekhri! Nice! So that should tell you how NL is now following the “Tejpalisation” of media. Tejpalisation essentially involves reckless writing, writing propaganda for one particular party and their friends and slowly turning a rape victim, in the case of a media celebrity, into the offender. NL as you knew it is over. As a reader points out “Get used to it”! How did this turnaround or compromise happen? It’s not very hard to guess or should I say “Tu nahi samjhega”? I estimate the ownership pattern of NL itself might have changed.

Let’s look at the line up for the event. There’s Modi, Lalu, Akhilesh, Kejriwal and MamataB. Would Modi have agreed to an event initiated by NL? I don’t think so. Would Modi have agreed to an event initiated by NDTV? Fly a kite! Therefore, the only possibility is Facebook would have initiated it and roped in Modi. Besides, who would really want to listen to Lalu or Akhilesh? I don’t know, maybe an “organised” mob. What about Kejriwal? What exactly would be special about AK in another event? He is on TV almost 24X7 there is nothing that anyone can learn anew from his tape-recorded “Ambani is corrupt, Modi is corrupt and you are corrupt” dialogues. MamataB? Maybe a few but she is no way a major attraction beyond Bengal. In short, without Modi this event would have been still-born. And the only entity that could have roped in Modi is FB. KanchanG suggests Modi’s office wasn’t aware of the other partners of the event.

Leave aside FB. One of the other two partners probably created the event and one of them got FB to sell it to Modi (and the others) because it’s clearly unlikely Modi would have agreed to. And is it all for free? No sponsors? I sincerely doubt it. In fact Modi supporters aren’t very happy that he would be appearing on NDTV, a channel that abused him for a decade and still continues to abuse him in very “clever” ways as the first tweet in this post shows. So what happened? NDTV got a surrogate interview to telecast that they otherwise wouldn’t have got. Modi has appeared in interviews with Timesnow and CNN-IBN over the years but not in a major exclusive with NDTV. This is their kill in response to exclusive interviews on another channel. In the following lines that I quoted in the beginning lie an answer:

“You should've taken care of me just a little bit instead of making me take them dives for the short-end money…” Who took the dives for the short-end money? That’s for you to figure out. All I can say for sure is that NL as a media-critic brand is over. In its new avatar you will find it more directly aligned with one of the MSM outlets. As for NDTV, its pathetic slide down the drain will continue and with the prospect of a political change at the centre their future doesn’t look too bright. NL may temporarily glow under the lights of this event but I would have to once again quote but rephrase the lines in the 2nd para:

“You don't understand. You coulda had class. You coulda been a contender. You coulda been somebody instead of a…”
