Considered one of the greatest actors of all-time, Robert DeNiro has this to say about acting: “One of the things about acting is, it allows you to live other people's
lives without having to pay the price (for it)”.
Five years ago I was invited to be on a panel of judges for the annual
function of a school. You know the ones where they celebrate their foundation
day with songs, drama, dances and comedy skits. It’s a good opportunity for
students to demonstrate their skills beyond the academic courses. Almost all
parents attend too. Why not, especially parents of the participants would like
to see their kids win some praise and prizes. I remember the girl who won the
prize for best drama. She did a 15-minute solo act. She was from Class-4 so I presume around 9 years of age then. Her script was forceful and so was her
acting and dialogue delivery. I must admit I was stunned to see a kid emoting
in a manner that turned many faces in the audience grim and some men and women
even had tears in their eyes. What was she playing? Well, she was playing the role of a female foetus in the womb. She
was pleading from the womb with her father and mother not to kill her. This was
in Junagadh in Gujarat. It was creative, impactful and dramatic to say the least.
There has been a campaign going on for long in Gujarat against female
foeticide. At the end of her performance the audience spontaneously gave her a
standing ovation that lasted nearly 3 minutes. The only question in my mind was
whether a child of 9 can really understand female foeticide, its implications
for society and all that. Hard to tell but maybe she was explained very well
while being coached for her act. What is important is that the message of the
social evil of female foeticide had reached even the primary levels of schools.
But wait! The country doesn’t know! Umm.. Not unless Aamir Khan says so.
First, a confession: I have not watched a single episode of Satyameva Jayate (SMJ) and I don’t intend
to. I have also not watched any of those Saas-Bahu soaps or any of that stuff either.
I have watched Oprah Winfrey when
there were fewer channels and hardly any private news channels. In principle,
this blog does not ever comment on any entertainment shows. And it is not about to either. I’m not a movie
or drama critic. And, therefore, I do not intend to pass any comment on SMJ,
being that it’s an entertainment show, even if in the ‘Glycerine’ category. I
would imagine it’s the modern day TV version of Meena Kumari. The only difference between Oprah and Aamir that I
could think of is that Oprah claimed to have gone through many of the problems she
discussed on her show during her childhood and part of her adulthood. Aamir, on
the other hand, has been an actor since he was 7 years old and has lived a
largely luxurious or at least comfortable life. The comparison ends there. What
did get my attention was an article in Outlook
magazine by S. Anand titled ‘Silence Eva Jayate’ (July 23 edition). So let’s quickly look at a few excerpts
(in blue) from Anand’s story:
I had spotted Bezwada Wilson in the audience…. He too
was asked to narrate his early life, and he too shed tears. As did Khan with
practised ease. The next day I called Wilson and told him I was annoyed that
even he did not bother to mention Ambedkar and Reservation. Wilson clarified
that he indeed had. It had been edited out, as was his rant against the SC and
Parliament—since both institutions had been dragging their feet on the issue of
manual scavenging. Then he revealed something that shocked me. He said he had
not been in the audience when Kaushal
Panwar was being interviewed by Khan. I countered saying I had seen him
‘reacting’ to what Kaushal said on stage. “Even
I saw myself in the audience and hence was shocked,” said Wilson. He said
Kaushal had been interviewed in total isolation, in an empty studio. And yet on
Sunday we saw, every once in a while, close-ups of fretful, anxious, pained and
agonised faces of members of the studio audience as Kaushal was narrating her
story. They even clapped on cue, like when
Khan asked Kaushal her heroic father’s name. Clearly, all this had been
manipulated and faked—with clever editing and splicing of shots.
I give all credit to Anand for so meticulously narrating what he
researched. But this is television – and SMJ is not ‘Live’. It’s not even like Sagarika’s LookLive. Studio audiences are coached for responses, unlike the
audience responding to that little girl acting in her school function. In the
old days a man would shuffle signs written on cardboard to prompt audience
response in the studio. (Doordarshan used such placards for program and credit-titles,
you can see those in their archives). With audiences, the man with a placard
will prompt the audience to ‘Clap’
or go ‘Awwwwww’ to respond to a
transaction. (See pic). This is done even when the main performers and actors aren't present and recorded only with the audience present. This can also be done with 'doubles' as in regular movies.
Since then studios have evolved to use digital prompters as can be seen
for ‘Applause’. So when it says applause, people clap. When it says “Shock”
people turn their faces to a grim expression which the camera will honestly
capture. When the prompter says “Aww” the audience will let out a loud “Awwwwwww”
either in sympathy or empathy or in happiness at a couple kissing. The prompter
in SMJ might even say “Cry” and some might force a few tears. Now, that is not
so hard to fathom really, is it?
In fact, when
Chandra Bhan Prasad, mentor to DICCI and an exponent of ‘dalit capitalism’,
watched the show with Kamble in Pune, they could not believe their eyes.
Kamble’s interview with Khan had been shot with Dharmadhikari and Kamble seated
next to each other on the studio couch; but
Kamble had been weeded out. Prasad wondered if some ‘dirty trick
editing’ made this possible. More likely, Dharmadhikari took a leaf out of
Khan’s book and did not mind giving a ‘fresh take’ minus the unsuitable
presence of Kamble. I also discovered that every participant on the show is
forced to sign a ‘confidentiality agreement’ saying they will not speak about
their participation—recorded many months ahead—in any social media.
Okay, there is no trickery involved here. This is normal editing out of
what is inconvenient to a show that is supposed to deal with ‘facts and truth’. The confidentiality
agreement is also a normal practice in such shows. The question Anand didn’t ask
is: Did the people who appeared for
interviews get paid an appearance fee? In all probability they did. People
are also chosen for views that “suit” a program’s agenda and not randomly or purely
on their expertise. You see,
confidentiality agreements aren’t signed unless there is a ‘consideration’ of
some nature. Now, if the interviewees were paid in cash or kind then they
have no option but to abide by the confidentiality clause because it probably
includes a clause that says the footage may or may not be used. So while Anand
genuinely talks about it from a moral point of view, given the show is treated
as ‘social conscience’ program, the
mistake he makes is that he doesn't see it’s just another ‘entertainment’ show. It is just another Bollywood movie. The viewers
expecting something larger is their own fault. But this is how TV fools people
which Anand explains clinically.
Khan and his team
not only deviously censored any discussion of Ambedkar and Reservation, they seemed
content to use the 1920s language of high-caste reformers. A friend chided me
saying I shouldn’t expect Khan to be an activist. But surely my friend did not
know how Khan manipulates and fools his audience—in the studio and outside—to
nod and cry at moments he chooses. Wilson said, “In fact, during the shoot it
was not I who actually began crying. Aamir Khan started to cry, so I was forced
to cry along.” Khan obviously thinks we can flush away middle class shit with
tears.
Lately, in the incident relating to the Guwahati molestation there has
been discussion on whether it is ‘politicized or not’ or whether it should be ‘politicized’.
Shows such as SMJ cannot afford to be politically incorrect. Thus, any references
to Ambedkar, facts, truths or accuracies are false expectations that viewers
should not nurture. Anand’s friend is
right. Like Anand many viewers too
expect or believe Aamir Khan is some kind of activist. He is not. He is an
actor, first and last. Period! Still, one must applaud S. Anand for his effort to reveal certain truths about SMJ.
Like Robert DeNiro said, actors can live other people’s
lives without having to pay the price for it. Aamir can wax eloquent about any problem and any social evil but he doesn’t
have to pay a price for it or for the lives of those who suffer. His job in
SMJ is to act out a part scripted for the show. Does he act well? Does he act
badly? That should be the assessment viewers should be making. As with movies, so too
in a program that isn’t live, Aamir can get 17 shots, 17 retakes, 17 camera
angles, thousand expressions and a few tears. To
help his acting there is also glycerine and prompters that will tell the
audience to Shock, Aww and Applaud. Enjoy the show!

ReplyDeleteI guess it all boils down to lack of rules and regulations for TV shows. I guess there are no categorizations in TV Shows, which SMJ and Other news tv are exploiting at the cost of Viewers emotions. For example if there is a category of Talk show, they should run a line saying recorded earlier, and If they have multiple panelists/interviewees appearing on show at different times, the anchor must reveal that X/Y was here before interviewed and these were his views...so on, instead of using a computer technique to un/glue them on the show where the interviewee is unaware what were the views of the previous interviewee. In India people always look upon celebrities like Aamir as people who are larger than life, and expect divinity of some sorts. If they start to talk about Govt policies, they will be politically incorrect, so instead of Aamir talking about the issues on SMJ rides, he piggy backs on the cases/people and uses their words or gets them to say something which will directly not be construed as Aamir's direct opinion/voice so that even though the show is bristles the subject of lack of governance/society system, but Aamir does not seem to direcly saying something that comes under political criticism. Not taking up the Ambedkar or SC/ST reservation, is the subject that, if not spoken/shown on the show, Aamir does not need to express any opinion about it and thereby retaining political immunity for himself as well as the show. The subjects like caste based oppression and inequality can be easily taken up because Aamir is sure that there is no one to defend the Hindu Values and it can never become a Political subject given the times where the Hindus are themselves 2nd class citizens in India. For the same exact opposite reason, he can never take up the multiple Marriages and Multiple child berths and how it affects the mothers of Muslim community because there is no shortage of Sickulars in India who are up in arms against any/everyone who even remotely refers to such taboo subjects.
ReplyDeleteThanks for exposing SMJ, Aamir khan should first be good to his wife whom he divorced after 20 years before preaching others. This man is a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteAs far as censoring remarks on Ambedkar and Reservation is concerned this is not the first time, General Category people are treated like 2nd class citizen in India,Indian govt think that Upper caste are born rich and have extra large mind.
Saurabh I agree with you on the treatment of general category citizens by the government. Ages ago certain groups of people were discriminated against by others on the basis of them being considered inferior. Today the Indian government discriminates against general category people based on the governments perception of their superiority. There are many BPL families even among upper castes, but the receive no benefits what so ever just because the government thinks they deserve to be discriminated against now simply because they are born in such communities.
DeleteToday government engage only in vote bank politics and really have no inclination towards bringing equality in our country
Don't know why the author claims Oprah has a moral authority to host such shows because she has been through. Absolute rubbish. Even Gandhi was born into a life of luxury.
ReplyDeleteOprah & Aamir are celebrities who host a successful show, no-one is morally better.
Also don't put Aamir on a pedestal for doing his "job" well. SMJ is a well made emotionally involving show. But it is a show. Aamir does get paid. A whole Eco-system from music rights to ring back tones sales is bringing in profit to many companies. It is a business, and we should not get offended with some creative editing :)
I don't why we jump to censorship for everything? Like NVLTEC suggests. Aamir has never claimed that SMJ is an un-edited show. If audience are foolish enough to believe that, its not Aamir's fault.
@Karthik
Delete1. The post compares Oprah and Aamir but does not infer any moral rights for anyone to do any program or otherwise. This is purely your interpretation.
2. No one has been put on a pedestal for anything whatsoever. This is again your own interpretation. As stated in the post, whether its a business or not, the post doesnt make any direct comment on the show itself but the processes used in studios.
Nobody seems to be venting... except you.
Aamir and SMJ is the best example how "secular" parties operate! and most importantly how "secular" poisoned fools think and act!
Delete@Karthik
Delete1. I have not recommended any censorship, I only said that there should be more transparency in any Show because may be all of the viewers are not as educated and well informed as you are. It is purely your interpretation that I recommended censorship.
2. For a show like SMJ, I will not wrong to expect more transparency. Another word for hiding behind untold technical facts, is secrecy. For a show which says so many things, not saying 1 or 2 technical facts is pretty convenient way to say that we never said said the untold.
Another brilliant post. 2005 onwards indian television started selling laughter and not it's time to sell tears to gain popularity. I dont think AK should be blamed for. It is his fans who have created an social service halo around the otherwise commercial program. Nalini singh used to bring a brilliant show call "hello zindagi" on doordarshan in early 90s, so there is nothing pioneer here. I am just wondering if the same show was hosted by SRK the AK fans would have liked it with the exact content. In this world of outsourcing, people have began to outsource their emotional appetite. Lot of people feel that they are doing a great social service by watching SMJ.
ReplyDeleteHi Ravinar,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog, I had a few things that crossed my mind. Firstly, I never saw an Oprah, but have seen Ellen and Anderson Cooper's show and I thought in a very broader perspective, all these shows including SMJ (desi Oprah) have a pre-set idea of what to present to the viewer, more like a movie (which is happy ending to the dark lives of some!!). Social activism and awareness become a by-product of the actual presentation and while a few viewers can comprehend that, not all can do so! And that's where it hits the chords with millions of viewers.
I also think this is obviously same as watching a news channel. You and many others point out the lies, incomplete truths and deceit which news channels show, there are some of us who are now aware. But go to their FB sites and Twitter handles and we will see more than a million likes and followers, who come from the educated class but have no conscience to judge what's right, logical and wrong.
I saw first few episodes, 4 precisely of this show and the emotional drama was a little too much for me to take. (Not to downplay what the interviewees would have gone through in their lives though!). Crying, Feeling good, Shocking expressions felt artificial from the beginning but hey, that sells (all over the world!) I don't know anything that you and others are talking about the caste and reservation issue as I did not see the episode, but I thought censoring was expected. From what I have seen, the helpline presented in the child abuse episode and their mini workshop was surely beneficial to a whole lot of people, also the knowledge about the General Pharmaceuticals. If SMJ can bring in a law for even one or two of so many causes presented in the show, it is still a good change.
Whatever one's opinion about Anderson Cooper we will have to separate him from the group of people you've mentioned. He comes from a very affluent family but earned his prominence for some hard reporting at great personal risk from various conflict zones, mostly as a freelancer.
DeleteWhere Ellen (deGeneres) or Oprah are concerned... let me just say "No comments".. Haha!
Raviji,
ReplyDeleteI saw the first episode and then I decided that AK is taking this whole country for an emotional ride and as you said that is it. Period.
You as usual are brilliant in analysis Media Crookedness. Great work and keep it coming
I decided not to watch any of SMJ crap after i saw its promotion! "rone do.. rulayenge.. sach batana hai" LOL!!! BS!!! and mind you, from what i have heard, the topics chosen are which have been already milked but he has just another method of doing it!
ReplyDeleteDear Aham Brahmasmi,
DeleteEven pure Crime serials such as CID or Crime Patrol, etc also raise all these issues from a different perspective of criminality. All Aamir Khan is doing is milking these issues to cash on his popularity. The point that Ravinar is making here is that the Entertainment industry is using such emotive issues & twisting them to suite their agenda which although leads to catch eyeballs do not solve the problem in anyways.
I had written a post on Aamir's article on "Healthcare" in "The Hindu"
ReplyDeletehttp://plainspeak.wordpress.com/2012/05/31/satyamevajayate/
Agree with you on adding an emotional quotient in the show. Ignoring this particular point, SMJ has been a great platform to raise social issues and it has certainly brought about an awareness in the society.
ReplyDeleteIf you got aware of the social ills in our country by watching SMJ, then perhaps you were too busy or too ignorant !!
DeleteNumerous social orgs like RSS, Seva Bharti, Tata Foundation have been working to eradicate these social ills and are actually doing work on the ground. But Alas ! It needs a tv show on a lazy sunday morning in your air conditioned living room to realize all these things !!
It is pure and pure business. It doesn't tell you to get your hands dirty and go out and work on the ground. Hence middle class loves the show !!
Look boss, I'm not God, neither am I a "Ranjhor ka Rathod" who knows everything by birth... and I'm not ashamed to say that. If a TV series is helping in educating the masses, we should accept it and be grateful to it instead of criticizing it.
DeleteBTW, who are you to say what I should do and what not? You better be in your own limits. Don't try to dictate your terms on others.
Imagine, In sholay when people were troubled by the autocracies of Gabbar singh, and there is an emotional show on the plights and Animal rights of Dhanno (Ghodi, Basanti's mule). :). Just kidding.
ReplyDeleteThe themes chosen puzzle me sometimes but It's ok. I agree that not everyone has to fight with the corruption or other prime issues.
From what Sucheta Dalal wrote in Moneycontrol.com about the gross mismanagement of money generated from the show and from a friend's blog (http://chatpatechatkhare.blogspot.com/2012/06/blog-post.html), I am inclined to think that all this SMJ business is again a facade behind the NGOs' attempt to milk money from the ever gullible Indian donors. There have never been any doubts that the show is scripted, propagates half-truths, is blatantly one-sided and even goes to the extent of falsifying of "facts" that are supposedly the outcomes of hard work by a "Research Team". These people are Media Crooks of a different kind, and nothing else.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you exposed the not so pretty side of this show's programming process...Never thought you would write about this show as this was not in your purview. And you remained in it by bringing out the media manipulation side of this show.
ReplyDeleteI finally can pinpoint, why SMJ has been bothering me.
After much frenzy in the media and internet, I saw 2 episodes - ones about female foeticide and dowry.
And it did not strike a chord with me like millions of my fellow Indians who are swearing by it( who for some reasons got a rude awakening only now about these evils existing around us for donkey's years)...I was started to feel like an outcast cause these episodes rather ticked me off even though the topics discussed were something I am so against in principle and in action.
In-fact I thought they even glorified victimhood (dowry episode).. with literate women still suffering with in-laws after constant abuses and 20 forced abortions!! (just my personal view)
Whatever this "tear-jerker politically correct entertainment/chat show" in the garb of "social awareness show" does to our society is yet to be seen , but it has definitely elevated Aamir Khan from an "actor" to a "social reformist" status...
just shows we are so desperately looking for people to change us that we will make any tom, dick or harry our leader of change. And we want it quick so one episode per one evil social issue just works for us perfectly.
well said! I was trying to look for words how to express my displeasure on this show..and yours were right there! thanks! :)
DeleteSMJ is a half baked cake which people are lapping it up. For example when dowry is concerned the bride's side puts the argument that male and female are born equals so dowry not justified [I agree], but at the same time, in most of the cases the same bride's family refuses to share the patriarchal property with their daughter when there are brothers in the family. The many feminists raise a hue and cry and do chest beating when a dowry case comes forth, but I never heard these same feminists ever whisper when daughters are denied a share in family's patriarchal properties neither the emancipated daughters raise a voice against this gross injustice. I sincerely look forward to the day when SMJ takes up this issue, mere taking up half stories [dowry] is half baked cake, we deserve no less than the full baked.
ReplyDeleteIn the dowry programme, there was no mention of misuse of anti-dowry act.
DeleteHow impolite and politcally incorrect it would have been. He is speaking the "correct" political lingo.
And the manner he was belittling our theory of karma in previous birth by saying that now that polio vaccine is there, therefore previous birth concept of deformed limbs is not applicable (something to this effect)
He is very over rated
When people were criticising Amir's intention, i thought it was going overboard. Now, after reading a host of articles, i am more or less convinced that SMJ is just another entertainment show. Thank god! except for the first show, i never wasted my time on that! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat blog as always. I haven't watched the show. How can I since I don't bother to watch TV. A comment I saw on the net called the show "smoke and mirrors." Seems to sum up the show well.
ReplyDeleteAging stars have little to do now but start a tearjerker of an edited reality show for gullible viewers to be brainwashed.
I haven't seen the show till now and I don't plan to either. The hype in the visual media and more so in the social media is more than enough anyway. Frankly, although it does seem that AK is taking the nation for a ride and that this is becoming just another entertainment show I somehow feel that some issues raised by him do make a bit of sense. Its not that they were not out in the open or that we do not discuss them, its just that they have been pushed to the back of our minds. Issue like that of generic drugs, elderly care etc. need to be thought out, though solutions to them wont come through SMJ. The larger public good lies in the citizenry being aware of these and actually giving thought to such issues. If they were raised by any other media well and good, if they are raised by SMJ, well and good. I don't follow AK, I don't follow SMJ. I follow the need for change for good. And whether this change comes from an entertainment show or from a serious intellectual discussion or anywhere else I really don't care. As long as it causes awareness and it forces people to think, there's nothing wrong with it.
ReplyDeleteWoW!!! This captures what I felt from the only episode that I watched, the first one. Everything about this "insult to common sense" program on TV is a big FAKE. When Amir Khan talks about Female rights, dowry, it rings hollow. Someone who lives his life exactly the opposite to what he preaches on this "show" Once of the websites "apnetv" describes this show thus - "Watch hindi drama serial Satyamev Jayate Aamir Khan online" Yes it is just a drama :) Period!
ReplyDeleteLeaving aside what I have written above what is even more shocking are the revelations in this blog. Even audience responses are faked? (and audience itself) This is pits! Fake live and now fake audience and response. No wonder the viewership is dropping going by the latest TRP ratings. Viwers can be taken for a ride sometime but not all the time and for long time. No wonder again that there won't be another set of episodes after this series. Thank God for small mercies.
What I love about this post is being extremely non-judgmental but chillingly factual.
Dear Author...I saw your article thinking something on SMJ was being done wrong or faked..but when I read this..I literally laughed out loud...did u really think or you think that people think the show is live/not rehearsed..its coming on TV..why shouldn't it be rehearsed..its a TALK show..it has to be edited to suit the audience. Now what would have made sense to me is if you somehow found out that the issues being discussed on the show are not true or are irrelevant and wrote an article on it. Rest..who thinks AK is an activist..people are glad that such a huge celebrity is attached to such a show ..cos u know why..people pay more attention to issues when someone so huge is involved. Why do u think people look for celebrity role models or stress on celebrities to become good role models? Everyone knows AK is an actor and has millions/billions and is becoming more popular n richer by the minute cos of this show..but what u miss here is that ( I guess cos u don't watch this show) a show like this is bringing the much needed attention/awareness to social issues in India!! No one is building temples across India and making AK into a super hero.
ReplyDeleteDear Sanjeevani Arora,
DeleteIf you have carefully read the article & the responses, you would agree that nobody is criticizing the content of the show & how a Celebrity such as AK is helping raise awareness. The actual point here is that, people do not commit crimes such as female Fetuses abortion or Caste discrimination or Dowry, etc because they are not aware of the problem. People already know what's right & wrong but still do what they want to. Mr Amir Khan is simply using these issues like a Saas Bahu Serial & encashing them. Will such Bubble hype help any issues in this country ? No ways.
Mr "On the Move" has written a very candid response earlier.
He says thus" If you got aware of the social ills in our country by watching SMJ, then perhaps you were too busy or too ignorant !!
Numerous social orgs like RSS, Seva Bharti, Tata Foundation have been working to eradicate these social ills and are actually doing work on the ground. But Alas ! It needs a tv show on a lazy sunday morning in your air conditioned living room to realize all these things !!
It is pure and pure business. It doesn't tell you to get your hands dirty and go out and work on the ground. Hence middle class loves the show !!
SMJ did expose one thing, the upper caste arrogance continues and its as deep rooted as it was 1000 years ago.. many comments here prove my point...
ReplyDeleteIf the cause is good it is better to use any trick in the book to get the best results. Isn't it better that millions of people saw the issues in SMJ because of Aamir's media skills rather than being straight forward & nobody seeing it! As it is in today's world it is very difficult to do good work. Doing good work & preserving your status is even more difficult. Lots of crusaders' efforts have gone to waste simply because no one noticed them. One can say the same for TEAM ANNA in the way they have handled the media. In the end one must get the desired results. The corrupt are doing this better than most.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I had to disagree with Ravinar.
ReplyDeleteAmir Khan might not be an activist but to bring the country's ills and pains to mainstream and provide publicity is the least he could do?nah?
Kudos to Amir Khan for doing what the mainstream news media have so shallowly backed away from to indulge celebrity antics.
I say carry on Amir Khan.
Its no surprise that media have been playing with human emotions to stay at top of the TRP racing. They even dont actually follow rules (either social or administrative or organization if there exist any).
DeleteI just want to make my point that Ravinar should have criticized media's side rather than attacking on SMJ also.
SMJ has not raised social issues which were not know/discussed earlier, just that it has taken those issues to larger public.
Please do not take criticism and cynicism to extremes. There may be some rehearsal that may have taken place to give the show some appeal and easier to understand rather than making it a free form spontaneous discussion. If they are indeed showing false visuals then they are really doing their credibility a great disservice
ReplyDeleteBut that does not take away too much from Aamir Khan and his efforts. Only an extreme cynic will think that he is going and meeting people in the every part of the country solely because he has profits and television success in his mind. I think he wears India on his sleeve and what better way to show it. i would be much prouder of a celebrity who cares about Indians than someone that wins the cricket world cup or some artist or writer that wins an international award.
When Anna started the anti corruption movement it wasnt because people were not aware of corruption. It was to relieve them of their insensitivity and indifference towards it. Only bringing these discussions to the centre of our dialogue will we do anything about it. The news channels show us only Bollywood and cricket. Aamir in a way proves what Justice Katju had to say about the real India as against the perception that is created by our news channels. Like Anna, i believe Aamir is a medium to bring social and "real" issues of India to the forefront of our discourse. This may not change anything on the ground immediately like observed by another cynic "middle class does not want to get its hands dirty" but certainly you cannot deny the impact and the thinking that may have been fuelled in peoples minds.
Lets not discourage every right move with cynicism and negativity
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSorry but have to finally disagree with Ravinar. Whatever tricks outlook claims, the end product of SMJ is of very high quality and with a very positive message, connecting to the hearts of the people rather than the minds. As Shrikanth says, lets us not turn cynical and discourage the good work.
ReplyDeleteAmir Khan is a charlatan and an Islamic fundamentalist. Notice while he with great glee shows the society of infidels as terribly flawed, he is very careful not to touch a single Muslim issue (women empowerment, terrorism, rejection of polio drops, over-breeding, etc.)
ReplyDeleteRavivar, nice post....just curious after reading "jungadh" in your comment..Can I know, are you from junagadh? and which school was it??
ReplyDeleteNote- I am basically from junagadh, so just curious...
do you actually believe that there is any credible media around? including this blog of yours? the least you can do is put your faith in something that's seems right or at least partly beneficial.i am sure the audience are smart enough to do that. so what if the audience is staged, is that what you care about? your opinion (though i share some of it) is extremely narrow minded and insecure.
ReplyDeleteI was on the show. Let me tell you one thing for sure.... we were never prompted to act shocked or laugh or do anything of that kind. It`s easy to wag tongues when you are not there... ask any of the audiences if anybody from akp ever asked them to react in a particular way.
ReplyDeleteAnd you all have existed with the social problems highlighted in the show- maybe talked about them once in a while, maybe felt bad about them... but have you been able to acheive the awareness Aamir Khan could.
he could have easily done a naach gaana show /bigboss to please people... and more people would have been pleased and Aamir Khan would have got less brick bats, from people who anyways will only give brickbats...
The writer of this blog needs to read the comment by Ms. Mitu Khurana ,the above comment !
ReplyDeleteYou are just a loser venting out your frustration !
This show has spread awareness, given a solution to problems which r very much part of our society..I know y u compared it with Oprah ! You are one of those firangi culture obsessed people....there is so much poverty in people of our country,so many issues..!
someone is spreading awareness atleast !
and if you have not even seen the show, why r u even blogging about it ?
Many of your other posts are superb..but this one is a big let down !
People and Authors please, stop judging Aamir as a person and by his profession. What the writer has not even watched the show. How are you entitled to give you opinion then?
ReplyDeleteThe show raised many important issues and steered clear of controversies ( Ambedkar and reservations ) and edited, tricked 3-4 people. But the end result was really good.Period.
This is the problem with writers who write for print media. They do not know how many people read their article. A printed magazine has many articles and people can choose not to read it. But a teleshow like SMJ need to be catered to a variety of audience who need to listen to it. Will the historic atrocities against Dalits appeal to a middle class person who watches the show with family (most of them non dalits). Was the show targeted at dalits?
ReplyDeleteIf the show does not mention Ambedkar and Reservation probably they did great. They were able to think out side the box. Many people do not see reservation as a tool enabling people. They see it as a killer of merit. With that Ambedkar also suffers. Ambedkar is probably most abused person. All dalit leaders use his name for getting support without even knowing what he stood for.
We can even debate at length whether reservation was helpful. It might be helpful for a small percentage of people. But it did not remove most of the evil in society.
SMJ wanted to give a message. They were able to do it without hurting people who watched it. It is the parents of most of these viewers who were abusers (knowingly or un knowingly).
